Chapter 18:

Clairvoyance and Search. First Attack

The music of the stars

Maya was calm; she was one of the few people who wasn't worried about the problem with Cristina. She trusted her friend, and not only that, she already knew who the real culprit was.

“Can we help?" she said to her mother.

"Yes," her mother said simply. "It's time to help. You know what to do."

Maya smiled at her mother's words. She was finally accepting her clairvoyant ability and allowing her to use it. Both women arrived at the scene of the incident looking for anything that could help them. There wasn't much. The place hadn't been cleaned up yet, “this is awful” thought Maya. It was going to be difficult to find a clue. She got an idea and went to find Alex.

Sylvia sensed the anomalies of those magical frequencies scattered throughout the room. She wondered where they had come from and recognized that it wasn't magic coming from blue or white stars. Her daughter hadn't told her about her investigation into Karla. She left the room; getting the idea about, searched for help

"I need your help," Maya told Alex when she found him. "Do you have any of Cristina's personal belongings with you?"

"I don't have…" Alex started to say, but Maya interrupted him.

"Is there anything of hers in the art room? A pencil, a notebook, anything. It's urgent!”

Alex thought about it, causing Maya to get impatient.

"We usually leave our sketchbook binders behind sometimes."

Maya hurried back to the art room and began searching. She found the cabinet where supplies were kept and spotted several notebooks. She managed to find Cristina's sketchbook, which was full of doodles, including a rough sketch of what had once been the ruined painting. Maya grabbed a page and tore it from the notebook. She whispered a few words that Alex barely caught. The drawing was enveloped in a blue light and pointed in a straight line.

"I know where she is," Maya started walking, and upon hearing this, Alex followed her. His mother was stopped by Sylvia.

"Where are you going?" Alex asked, hurrying to keep up with Maya.

“For now, we have to find her," Maya replied calmly. "If you're coming with me, I need you to move fast."

"I don't understand how..." Alex began.

“I’m a clairvoyant. I can find people through their personal belongings," Maya answered.

They began their journey, and to Maya's surprise, Alex managed to keep pace— after half an hour, he was clearly exhausted. Maya decided to stop and have a rest.
"Are you ready? We have to keep going," Maya continue walking and gestured for her friend to do the same.

Meanwhile, Circe's father had arrived at the school with Noah and gave the potion to his daughter. The real challenge now was to find Karla. Circe had already been informed about the magical remnant in the art room and suspected that one of them belonged to Karla. Circe wasn't naive; she knew who had discovered the incident. Approaching Professor Martínez, and begin a conversation.

"It's unbelievable what happened in the art room," Circe began, catching the teacher off guard.

"Miss of Helios," the teacher whispered, looking somewhat surprised. She hadn't expected to be approached by one of that orphan's friends. "Yes, it's a a shame. When she returns, she will have to face the consequences."

"I never thought my friend would be capable of doing that," Circe was surprised about her lies. She had learned it from her father.

It had been much easier than she expected. The teacher was the one who had provoked the culprit. Now, where had Karla gone to hide? Word was that she was an admirer of a particular athlete. So, she decided to head to the soccer fields.

There sat one of the school's most promising athletes—a defender who was quite popular among the students and already had a guaranteed scholarship to study in Brandt, the capital of Cobalto.

In the bleachers, Karla was chatting with her friends, whispering about what had happened that morning. She listened as they mocked Cristina and brainstormed punishments she might receive. Being cautious, her father had given her a vial containing only a strange vapor.

Karla turned and saw Circe sitting down right beside her. She tried to ignore her, but a nagging suspicion crept in that this cursed white witch already knew everything. Karla shared her thoughts on how she would get Cristina sent right back to the orphanage—and maybe off to work in the mines.

"Red Pink Castle is also an option," one of her friends commented. Karla was surprised by the mention of that place. The others fell silent. "I've heard they pay good money for virgin girls."

No one wanted to continue the conversation. Circe, somewhat shaken, opened the vial and blew toward Karla. A sweet scent, like lemon cake, washed over the group.

"It's time you admit the truth," Circe said aloud, and the group jumped at the sound of the white witch's voice. "And await your judgment in the coming days."

Karla's friends were confused; Karla got terrified. Now she was genuinely scared. She decided to escape, but felt her legs guiding her in a direction different from the one she wanted.

The white witch smiled as she put the vial away; she chuckled a little and left, since soccer didn't interest her. The real chaos was about to be unleashed; she got an idea: giving Professor Martínez some of that gas so she would also confess.

Cristina had stopped in a small garden consisting only of a playground with children's games and some trees. She was shivering with cold, and her feet ached because the shoes she was wearing weren't exactly comfortable for walking out in the streets in that weather.

She was beginning to get hungry as she remembered how, back when she lived with Alfredo, she used to run away from her problems, too. She remembered how, she failed her languages class because she had been sick. She only went back because she had nowhere else to sleep. Alfredo punished her by making her skip dinner and even he forbid her to eat breakfast.

One again, only because she was hungry she decided to return to school. When she got up to go home, she realized something: she was lost. She couldn't remember which way was the school or her home noticing she hadn’t her phone. She turned around, looking for help.

Before she could start walking, she tripped. She got back up, rubbing her legs in pain. Someone approached and offered help. She accepted it, taking the hand of a middle-aged man.

Cristina felt something strange. The man's hand was warm—far too warm. She compared it to a fever; that temperature wasn't normal.
"Thank you so much," Cristina expressed her gratitude, trying to pull her hand away, but the man wouldn't let her. He squeezed Cristina's hand with excessive strength. She felt her body heat up in a strange way. First her hand, then her arm, and finally the rest of her body.
"STOP!" Cristina shouted, trying to break free from the person's grip. "It hurts! It hurts so much!"
The man smiled as he forced the girl's magic to consume her. A symbol appeared on Cristina's left hand. In the middle was a sun surrounded by two golden circles. The outer circle was decorated with what looked like clock hands. Below this drawing were two wings, once again surrounded by a circle containing a star glowing with golden light.
The symbol was divided into two: the dawn on the left, colored in the colors of sunrise; on the right, the night. Both parts had clouds behind the wings. In the night section of the symbol, there was a crescent moon.
"LET ME GO! PLEASE!” Cristina shouted again. The man watched how the symbol changed. Instead of being symmetrical, the design seemed to tilt toward the night side.
Cristina's raw magic kick the man, leaving him in the ground. He tried to attack. Orange sparks and fire erupted from his hands.
"Stop!" a male voice shouted from behind Cristina. Looking back, Cristina could see he was agitated. The first she saw was his hair of that polar blue shade. His eyes were glowing. "You and your clan have already caused enough trouble."
Cristina began to scream. The girl body was releasing too much raw magic, which could end up hurting her. The man who had just arrived stood stunned by Cristina's magic.
"Girl!" that person shouted to Cristina. He managed to get her to hear her. He stepped closer, saw the symbol on her hand, and understood. "I'll help you. But I need you to cooperate."
Th man took Cristina's hands and forced her to stretch out her arm. The attacker watched the scene with a hint of fear. He couldn't do much; his body was paralyzed and refusing to obey him. Those two persons were not stellar magic users. Just knowing what kind of power they possessed filled him with fear.
