Chapter 5:
The Strongest Demon Contract
Gabe: “I think I’m dead. Yup, I’m definitely dead.”
Michael: “We’re finally here. Welcome to Sharpsville.”
As the name suggests, the town was very… sharp. The town was small, but very lively. People were in the streets dancing, fighting, and drinking. The buildings were simple buildings of clay with orange shingled roofing; however, almost every house had some weapon of some kind fitted on the doors. Whether it was knives, daggers, pikes, spears, or anything else, it was as if the town was ready for war at any second.
As for the people, they seemed to be a mix of many different races. The majority were human, but Gabe spotted elves, dwarves, beast people, and even a cyclops or two.
The three wandered through the streets, dodging drunkards and whoever else got in their way. Julie stopped for a moment to challenge someone to arm wrestling. Which she of course won.
Michael: “I almost forgot that the festival was going on.”
Gabe: “Festival?”
Michael: “Every few months or so, a few towns decide to throw these enormous festivals for a couple of days.”
Gabe looked around at the decorations and children running through the street. He smiled slightly. Then his mouth started to water.
Michael notices this.
Michael: “Okay, let’s get to the inn.”
On the way over, the trio never received any looks for the fact that one of their companions was completely bound. Slavery must be a common occurrence.
Before long, the three arrived at the inn.
Michael: “I booked a room under the name Michael.”
Innkeeper: “Let’s see here…”
The orc innkeeper ran his hand over a sheet of paper before stopping over something.
Innkeeper: “We’ve got you here. Three humans. Up the stairs and it's the third door on your left.”
Michael: “Thank you.”
The three made their way up the stairs and settled into their new apartment.
Gabe collapsed onto the bed.
Gabe: “I missed you, warm bed.”
Michael took a seat on the edge of his bed.
Michael: “Alright, I think it's about time we gave you a test run.”
Gabe looked over at him.
Gabe: “Wait, does that mean-”
Michael: “We’re taking the ropes off.”
Gabe jumped up. He accidentally hit his head on the ceiling and then collapsed again.
Gabe: “Really? I can't wait to use you again, hands. I will cut my nails every day, I swear it.”
Julie sighed.
Julie: “Are you really sure about this?”
Michael leaned back onto the bed.
Michael: “No, but we can’t keep his hands tied forever. Besides, isn’t that why you’re here?”
Julie grinned.
Julie: “Fair enough.”
Julie walked over to Gabe. A smoke came from her arm that manifested itself into a knife.
Gabe: “Wait, what are you doing? Uh, lady? Stop! I don’t like this.”
Gabe put his hands up in front of his face. Julie made a slashing motion with her hand.
The ropes fell off of Gabe’s wrists. He looked down and breathed a sigh of relief.
Gabe: “Wasn’t there a better way to do that?”
Julie smirked.
Julie: “No.”
Gabe frowned. He opened and closed his hands as he stared at them.
Then he looked up.
Gabe: “Show me how to make stuff with Barth.”
Michael: “It’s not that easy. It takes months of practice to make even the simplest of objects. Also, you need to completely understand the makeup of every object that you create.”
Gabe: “Oh.”
Barth appeared on Gabe’s shoulder.
Gabe: “You hear that Barth?”
Julie and Michael both instantly put up their guard.
Gabe looked over.
Gabe: “Guys?”
Julie: “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?”
Gabe looked between them.
Gabe: “What? It’s just Barth.”
Michael: “Call back that thing right now.”
Gabe shrugged.
Gabe: “Okay.”
Barth went back into Gabe’s body.
Julie and Michael relaxed slightly.
Michael: “From now on, don’t call on your demon unless you receive direct orders to do so.”
Gabe put his hands up.
Gabe: “Okay, okay. I get it. No need to get all hostile.”
Michael sighed.
Michael: “I’m going to have Julie watch you. If she happens to see even a puff of smoke, she’ll kill you before you can even blink. Is that understood?”
Gabe flinched.
Gabe: “Yeah.”
Michael: “Okay, good. Now let’s get some sleep. We’ve all had a long day of walking and I am tired. Good night.”
Michael goes back to his bed. Julie gives Gabe a look before returning to hers.
Gabe blinked.
Gabe: “Good night!”
Michael turned off the light.
