Chapter 14:
Sorin: The Forced Hero Who Wanted No Title
Sorin’s letter:
I know it's been a while, but this is urgent. I have settled myself into a lakeside village between the east and west called Farmouth. The locals took me in despite having a staff. And so they also put me to work almost instantly too.
Working as an assistant to a blacksmith is very rare, but with my fire ability, the smith works almost ten times faster with me around, so I landed the job without even an interview. I earn around two silver a month. I never imagined myself to be so spoiled that two silver would be enough not only for all my inn costs but also enough to buy a bountiful amount of food.
I really was spoiled.
More importantly, I heard from all the locals the story about the west and east. Having a village outside the control of both of them allows me to gain insight neither side would want. I truly see a bigger picture.
I haven't made a conclusion to which side is right or wrong, but I know now that it's more complicated than I was initially told. More complicated than anyone was. But let's save the messages for other topics too.
The books you sent me with the teleportation seal have proved to be super useful. I can produce staffless magic at a level of some flames. Sorry to be such a disappointing student. Your help has been great; however, learning the fundamentals of magic has made me improve in all areas of magic.
I also made some friends, the smith in the village named Vanir. He's truly a kind person; once again, I should thank him for allowing me to skip all the interviews. There is also a new woman I've been talking to. She doesn't match your craziness in the slightest, but it is refreshing, and she's the chief's daughter; she's pretty smart, around a year older than both of us. I have just a couple more projects to help with that will make the village more sustainable.
However, one thing that concerns me is that the east has been moving more and more people into here lately. The west hasn't sent a single mage, but I feel like the east might try to get this village for themselves.
It has a working port that would connect it to the north if the ocean wasn't an ice lake right now, and also connects to the northwest and northeast. They have these massive wooden structures that float on water called ships. You most likely knew that already, however.
Is it wrong for me to envy the normal life? I can't live the normal life anymore, and it almost saddens me that I'm enjoying this while a whole war is going on; that's why I'm returning soon. That day when I saw people burn in front of their eyes. It hurts to this day, but I knew you saved me and I couldn't help them.
I want you to meet me in this village, if possible, in three days. I think I can handle the projects, but if the east is moving in, three days is likely when they will strike. The barracks have been active lately, but they told the chief that it's just some drills.
At least this letter can reach you instantly. So don't act like you didn't see it. We already settled ourselves back together, and I already promised to help your cause and continue your bloodline once it all ends. So do this one thing if you don't mind. See you soon.
Ino’s letter:
Sorin, how fast do you expect me to write back? I'm not the type to write books and books of words. Now, when I think about it, that part of my bloodline is the one I will totally ignore! I'm not made for such things.
Also, how shameful you are; that's so true. I give you all the knowledge in the world! And yet you haven't mastered staffless magic. It's really pathetic. But I don't blame you; the staff regulates everything for you, so trying to make yourself be a regulator while also being the emitter must be tiring. Instead of letting your magic constantly flow around you, try to store it within one of your magic points… We have thousands of spots. So choose whichever is easiest naturally.
Also, how dare you cheat on me! We're not together, but you said you're continuing my bloodline, and now you're talking to a chief's daughter. I didn't imagine such a great hero to be popular with women. Where is my naive and lost Sorin gone? This world has taken too much from me!
About me coming over in three days, I will be there. Oh, make sure to prepare a feast; two silver is plenty of money for good food, especially for all those books I gave you. It's funny to think that you're shocked about two silver when people down here earn not even one; the spoiled turned into spoiled.
Remember this, Sorin: I'm coming, so feast, or I'm leaving. Then have fun dealing with those east people yourself without the great future of mages on your side. I might even join them to teach you a lesson.
Try your best not to cause trouble this time around. I wouldn't call you bad luck, for you are for sure a bad omen. So stop it already! I'm packing up now; Chikaru has the widest smile I think I've ever seen on her face. It's almost like she hates me; let's torture her with spells once we're back. Sorin, see you soon!
