Chapter 1:

Act 1 — Part 1

The Final Pages

Hello, my name is Léa.
Today, I live in Russia. My family and I moved here from the Netherlands. It was my father's dream, because his grandfather was Russian. He wanted to return to the land where his family had once lived.
Tomorrow, I will enroll at Lyceum No. 239 in Saint Petersburg.
The next day arrived. It was Tuesday.
I woke up very early. I was nervous. Everything was new: the language, the city, the streets, and especially the school.
I took the bus like everyone else, but this time with my mother. During the ride, she noticed that I was barely speaking.
— Are you nervous? she asked with a smile.
— A little... I hope everything goes well.
— Don't worry. You'll get used to it. And besides, if you have any problems, I'll always be here for you.
I gave her a small smile before looking out the window.
A few minutes later, we arrived in front of the school.
The building was large, with several floors and a huge courtyard where dozens of students were talking before classes began.
My mother and I entered the building, and then a secretary led us to the principal's office.
The principal stood up to welcome us.
— Good morning. You must be Léa and Mrs. Van Dijk. Welcome to Lyceum No. 239.
— Good morning, my mother replied. Thank you for seeing us.
— We are happy to welcome you. Léa, your file is complete. You will join the tenth-grade class starting today.
I timidly nodded.
— Will she have a homeroom teacher to help her settle in? my mother asked.
— Of course. Her teachers have already been informed of her arrival. The students are generally welcoming, so I think she'll find her place quickly.
— Thank you very much, my mother replied.
The principal looked at me kindly.
— Léa, I wish you an excellent school year. If you encounter any difficulties, my door will always be open.
— Thank you, sir.
After completing a few formalities, my mother wished me good luck before leaving.
A teacher came to get me and accompanied me to my classroom.
She opened the door.
The entire class turned to look at me.
There were ten students: six boys and four girls.
— Good morning, everyone, the teacher said. We have a new student joining us today. I'll let you introduce yourself.
I took a deep breath.
— Hello... My name is Léa. I lived in the Netherlands before coming to Russia with my family. I hope we can all get along.
For a few seconds, the entire class remained silent.
My arrival had certainly caught their attention.
I'll tell you what happens next in the next chapter.
