Chapter 15:
After the Rain
I did not sleep much.
The wind kept taking away my balance.
At some point I had to tie myself to the trunk.
It was enough sleep.
I did not dream again.
I go back to the road.
I estimate arriving at the Passage of Clouds by high noon even with the snow being too complicated to walk on.
I tried yesterday to melt the path but it only made slippery. I hate slippery.
The entrance of the Passage is as empty as I anticipate.
It is also more dangerous than I anticipate.
Years with the shortage of visitors, the bridges look abandoned. They have not been receiving the necessary maintenance.
I start walking.
The noises are terrifying.
The wood looks mostly rot but it seems yet resistant.
It is not a long walk. A couple of hours and I will be at the end. This platforms were built to have carriages and cars passing here constantly. I do not think my weight is going to break it.
Walking a bit more ahead I came across the most surprising and terrifying image I have ever seen. At this lookout point you can see the whole Capital city from up here.
All of it.
Its glory and decline.
From down there you have an idea of the whole situation.
But I do not even know where to start to describe.
A massive, gigantic dark gray cloud idled on top o the city. Lightning and thunder spontaneous being generated by the unstable magic in the atmosphere. An eerie vortex pulling the sky inside the cloud.
Consuming everything up there.
Draining all the water from the surroundings it is a scary extension of it. You can see where the wall of water ends and the dry lands begins. While the inside part is drowning the outsides lack life.
Plants are not growing anymore.
Drought is causing the soil to erode.
Animal life have all vanished.
And the area is alarmingly expanding.
It has already drained the nearest places and it is continuing to seek more and more.
A monstrous vortex with an endless thirst.
I can only feel anger now.
My stomach agrees with me.
Disgusting.
One man error is costing hundreds, maybe thousands of lives, their home, their magic, their resources.
The thing is that even if the Council is done, how can we correct this mistake? Can we with enough people being able to use and research magic again, can fix it?
It looks devastating.
Hopeless.
I can also see the damage the rain itself dealt to the city.
Constructions are falling to the humidity.
The ground is giving in in certain areas.
A large swamp has formed. The drainage system could no longer handle it.
The City is falling on itself like a sinkhole.
Slowly collapsing.
Does not look like anyone is doing anythings to stop.
I shake it off.
I can not stand here beholding this tragedy.
I have to help fix it.
End it.
The Council will fall and the balance will be restored.
After another whole day walking on snow I finally see it.
Fojstar is just ahead.
