Chapter 3:

Chapter Three-The Melody of Us

The Stars We Left Behind

Days bled into weeks, flowing like a gentle dream. Since that torrential night beneath the solitary yellow umbrella, an invisible, resilient thread had woven itself between Do-jin and Ji-hyun.
They were no longer merely quiet classmates sharing the same air; they had become each other’s sanctuary in a world that often felt overwhelmingly cold and indifferent.
The morning sun, a soft, pale yellow, filtered through the sheer curtains of her bedroom window, heralding the start of a new day. Ji-hyun woke early, as was her custom.
Her room was meticulously clean and organized, a reflection of the calm exterior she presented to the world. On her walls hung posters of her favorite female vocalists, and neatly stacked on her bookshelf were dozens of music tapes, organized with precision.
At her small wooden desk, her diary lay open, a chaotic repository of scribbled lyrics, fragmented dreams, and hidden fears. Yet, in the center of a pristine, blank page, a single name was written with deliberate care, encircled by small, shyly drawn hearts and doodles:
"Do-jin"
She had inscribed his name as if it were a secret incantation, a tiny talisman of luck meant to ward off the encroaching darkness. She gazed at the name, a genuine, warm smile—radiant as the morning sun—lighting up her features. Then, slipping out of bed, she began to prepare for the day ahead.
The silence that pervaded her home was heavy, almost suffocating; it was the eerie calm that inevitably preceded the tempest. This was not new to her. The cycle of violent storms followed by uneasy lulls was the only rhythm she had ever known within these walls.
But this morning, a secret warmth bloomed in her small chest, a comforting solace derived solely from the name resting in the pages of her notebook.
The living room, once a vibrant space filled with laughter and joy, was now silent and desolately empty. She checked on her mother, who still lay fast asleep, perhaps seeking refuge in unconsciousness from the harsh reality of their home.
Ji-hyun said nothing, merely pulled the bedroom door shut behind her with practiced, gentle care. Today, however, felt different.
Possessing a newfound courage, she clutched her diary tightly, glanced one last time at the lyrics within, and stepped out into the cool morning air, a bright smile gracing her lips. For the first time in years, someone was waiting for her. Someone she genuinely yearned to see.
At the main gate of the school, he stood waiting, casually holding a book that he wasn't truly reading. Do-jin... He was slightly taller than her, possessing an inherent, quiet demeanor and eyes that always held a trace of morning drowsiness.
The moment he caught sight of her approaching, his face brightened with a gentle, sleepy smile, and he slowly closed the book.
"Good morning," Ji-hyun greeted, slightly breathless from walking fast.
"Good morning," Do-jin replied, his voice soft and steady.
"You're early, as usual," she teased lightly.
"I just enjoy the quiet of the morning before everyone arrives," he said, offering a sheepish shrug.
It was a harmless white lie. The truth was, he had grown accustomed to arriving early just to catch a glimpse of her before the chaos of homeroom began—a fact he could scarcely believe about himself.
"You're an introvert at heart," she quipped with a playful smirk.
Moments later, the jarring school bell rang, signaling the start of the academic day. During classes, Ji-hyun remained outwardly placid in her seat, but her mind was elsewhere.
She was completely engrossed in her small notebook, refining lyrics and composing melodies. Nevertheless, her eyes would occasionally steal glances toward Do-jin, just to reassure herself that he was still there.
Across the room, Do-jin was surrounded by a noisy circle of male friends, animatedly discussing the usual teenage trifecta: video games, soccer, and anime.
When lunchtime (break) arrived, while Do-jin was still deeply engaged in a heated debate with his friends, Ji-hyun approached their table with tentative steps, clutching her notebook so tightly her knuckles turned white.
In a voice barely above a whisper, she called his name: "D-Do-jin."
The moment he heard her hesitant voice, he stopped mid-sentence, turning toward her instantly with a wide, genuine smile that completely erased his previous engagement.
Ignoring his friends, he looked at her and said firmly, "Sorry guys, looks like I'll catch up with you later."
He rose from his seat, walked over, and gently took her hand in front of their entire astonished class, guiding her out of the noisy room toward sanctuary.
Do-jin led her to their secret hideaway behind the main school building, a secluded, forgotten corner where no one else ever ventured. There, tucked away from the clamor of the crowded courtyard, they found their own private world.
Ji-hyun had fallen into a routine of singing whenever she wrote serious songs, and Do-jin would listen with intense focus, offering constructive feedback, applause, and invaluable advice to polish her performance.
For Ji-hyun, this was nothing short of miraculous; to have someone who genuinely listened to her words and shared her passion for music felt like a beautiful dream she was afraid to wake from.
After she finished singing a new piece, she asked, breathless, "What do you think? I drew inspiration from a song in a movie I watched a while ago."
"It was good," Do-jin responded in his characteristic calm manner.
He took the lyric sheet from her trembling hand and, with an expert hand, began crossing out and rewriting sections, suggesting a shift in the rhythmic cadence to better match the melody he heard in his head.
Ji-hyun watched him in reverent silence, absorbing every change, her eyes widening with a mixture of awe and excitement every time he added his magical touch to her creation.
She couldn't hold back a soft, spontaneous giggle: "Heh heh."
Do-jin raised one eyebrow in mild inquiry. "What's so funny?"
She blushed deeply, her eyes shining with profound gratitude as she looked at him. "Nothing... it's just, this is amazing. You don't just listen to me; you actually help me compose, write, and refine everything. It truly... it makes me so incredibly happy, I can scarcely believe it."
Do-jin responded with a shy smile, trying his best to mask his rising embarrassment. "G-good, just don't expect me to go easy on you next time."
An intimate silence descended between them, comfortable and warm. Then, in a soft voice tinged with vulnerability and a deep-seated fear of losing this fragile connection, Ji-hyun asked seriously, "Listen... Do-jin... why are you being so nice to me?"
Do-jin looked at her, his gaze steady and reassuring, and asked simply, "What do you mean?"
Ji-hyun hesitated, looking down at her worn sneakers. "I mean... I don't have any friends, I'm incredibly boring, and everyone avoids me."
Do-jin paused for a long moment, holding her gaze intently. In that quiet space, he spoke words that were simple, yet changed everything between them: "I... I want to be your friend."
Ji-hyun was completely stunned by his declaration. She whispered, almost unable to process it: "Your friend?"
Do-jin nodded, a small, genuine smile touching his lips. "Yes. Isn't it normal for people to help their friends?"
A radiant, relieved smile broke across Ji-hyun’s face, illuminating her features as she asked, her eyes shimmering with hope: "So... we are friends now?"
Do-jin confirmed softly, "Yes, friends."
Overwhelmed with pure joy and a sense of belonging she hadn't felt in years, Ji-hyun instinctively lunged forward, wrapping her arms around his neck in a tight, impulsive embrace.
Do-jin’s body went rigid for a split second; he was completely startled by the sudden physical contact. But the shock quickly evaporated, and with a tenderness that belied his age, he wrapped his arms securely around her waist, pulling her closer.
He whispered softly into the quiet air, just above the faint sound of distant rain: "Yes."
