Chapter 8:
HIKARU TO ONNA
In the morning at the academy, I saw the Sensei talking about everyone's groups.
"You've all checked your names, right?" Sensei asked.
"Yes, Sensei!" everyone shouted back loudly.
Sensei began reading out the names for Group 1: Akane, Mei, Sora, Shinto and Rei.
Next was Group 2: Gaku, Ikki, Nami, Sen, and Chiyo.
Then Group 3: Miyuki Yumeko, Yuki, Masaru, Tomoe, and Kitsune.
Finally, Group 4: Tatsuya, Kazuya, Momoko, Aika, and Tsukiko.
After calling out all the groups, Sensei stood there. Tatsuya looked over and noticed a girl in his group. It was Momoko—the exact same girl he had argued with earlier over a seat!
Tatsuya sighed in annoyance and muttered to himself, "Ugh, of all people, she's in our group!"
Momoko, on the other hand, was thrilled because her two best friends were right there in the same group with her.
Tatsuya spoke up, his voice deliberately loud enough for others to hear. "Looking at some people, you'd think they were heading to a party, not a classroom! Huh..."
Tasukiko caught the sharp, sarcastic jab immediately. Leaning toward Momoko, she whispered, "Wait, is he in our group?"
Momoko glanced over at Tatsuya, who looked thoroughly irritated and annoyed. She let out a soft huff. "Huh? Him? In our group? Forget it. The three of us are totally fine on our own."
A moment later, a boy walked into the room, drawing everyone’s attention. The teacher introduced him to the class. "Everyone, this is Satoshi Shin. He’s the leader for Groups 1 and 2."
As soon as he stepped in, a few girls in the class instantly fell for him. Whispering excitedly to her friend, one girl gushed, "Oh my gosh, this senior is so handsome!" The classroom quickly grew loud and chaotic with everyone talking at once. Seeing the commotion, the teacher leaned in and whispered to Satoshi, "You should probably head out now. If you stay any longer..."
Satoshi understood exactly what the teacher meant, nodded, and walked out. The whole class slumped in disappointment.
Losing his patience, the teacher snapped, "Alright, everyone quiet down!"
He then walked over to Yuki’s desk. Yuki was fast asleep. The teacher rapped on the desk three times, but Yuki didn't even budge. Finally, the teacher yelled his name. Yuki jumped up in a panic, throwing his hands up. "Yes, teacher?!"
"What do you mean, 'Yes, teacher'?!" the teacher scolded. "You’ve been sleeping this whole time! What kind of deep sleep is that? The class was literally screaming, and you slept right through it like a baby!"
Yuki rubbed his eyes and replied innocently, "But teacher, you always say we should do everything with absolute focus. That’s exactly what I was doing—focusing entirely on my sleep!"
The whole classroom burst into laughter.
The teacher stared at him, dumbfounded. "What?! Just because I said that doesn't mean you apply it to the wrong place,
Yuki opened the front door, kicked off his shoes, and looked straight at Masaru. "Hey, Masaru. What actually happened while I was asleep? Sensei said there was a ton of shouting and screaming going on."
Masaru leaned back, waving his hand dismissively. "Ah, remember those senior students Sensei was talking about? That was Satoshi Shin, the leader of groups 1 and 2. He’s pretty good-looking, so the girls got a bit too excited. That's why it was so loud."
"Huh," Yuki muttered, processing the information. "Then who’s the leader of the other groups?"
Masaru shrugged. "Who knows? Probably someone else."
Yuki sighed, looking away. "Figures..."
