Chapter 5:

Chapter-The Unspoken Rhythm

The Stars We Left Behind

Four years slipped away like a brief heartbeat, leaving childhood behind and thrusting them headfirst into the complex labyrinth of adolescence. They were no longer children hiding behind the courtyard walls; they were seventeen now, standing firmly in their second year of high school. The transformation between them was far from superficial—it pierced the core of their personalities and reshaped their social standing entirely. Yet, the invisible thread that had bound them together since that rainy night beneath the solitary umbrella remained stronger and more resilient than ever before.
Within the bustling corridors of Seo-on High School, the name "Ji-hyun" was synonymous with delicate beauty and an untouchable, royal poise. She had blossomed into a striking young woman, her hauntingly sweet and ethereal voice securing her position as the undisputed president of the music club. Beneath this polished surface, however, lay a thick wall of absolute frost. To her peers, she was universally known as the "Ice Queen"—not out of arrogance, but as a defense mechanism against a world that had once broken her heart. She rejected every single one of the hundreds of confessions she received, doing so with a polite yet chilling indifference that left admirers retreating in quiet despair. Among the girls, she was deeply cherished, but emotionally she remained guarded, carrying the lingering, unhealed scars of her parents' bitter divorce and a deep, buried fear of abandonment, despite living a comfortable life with her mother and her kind stepfather.
Do-jin, on the other hand, had transformed during those intervening years into a remarkably tall and strikingly handsome young man. His quiet demeanor, absolute silence, and effortless academic brilliance turned him into an urban legend among the female student body. Girls frequently fell for him from afar, captivated by his melancholic, noble charm, yet none ever dared to breach the fortress of his isolation. The reality hiding behind his striking facade, however, was brutally harsh. His mother remained permanently bedridden, forcing Do-jin to shoulder the crushing weight of her medical bills and household expenses entirely on his own. He worked grueling night shifts throughout the weekdays and long morning shifts every single weekend, desperately trying to balance his intense academic workload with backbreaking labor just to secure food and medicine. This daily hell was what had hardened his edges, making him look older, sharper, and far more emotionally detached than any of his peers.
When the final bell rang, the main school corridor flooded with the usual chaotic chatter of teenagers. Ji-hyun walked amidst a circle of her friends, laughing and radiating quiet confidence, drawing the gaze of nearly everyone in the hall.
Without warning, a bold, handsome upper-classman stepped out from the crowd, blocking her path with trembling hands. It was clear he had not yet learned the unspoken rules of the school. "Ji-hyun-ssi," he stammered nervously, extending a small, elegantly wrapped box of imported chocolates, "I made these with my own hands... Would you please accept them as a token of my feelings?"
The hallway instantly froze. Every student held their breath, waiting for the infamous "Ice Queen" to strike. Would she burst into anger? Would she publicly humiliate him?
Ji-hyun looked down at the chocolates, then slowly raised her eyes to meet the boy’s anxious gaze with chilling calmness. Her face settled into that familiar formal, polite, yet frost-bitten smile—the expression everyone feared because it meant absolute, polite destruction.
"I truly appreciate the effort you put into this, thank you," she said, her voice clear, melodic, and ringing softly through the silent corridor. "However, I must be completely honest: I do not accept gifts from admirers. Please spare yourself the trouble and don't put yourself in this position again."
With a formal, effortless bow, she slipped past him, leaving the boy rooted to the spot in burning embarrassment. A murmur of awed whispers rippled through the female students, cementing the belief that no boy in this entire school was worthy of Ji-hyun's heart.
Yet, the moment Ji-hyun rounded the corner and stepped completely out of sight, the "Ice Queen" vanished entirely. Her polished, cruel smile melted away, replaced instantly by a genuine, deep-seated anxiety. She lifted her chin and scanned the crowded end of the hallway with sudden, desperate urgency.
She spotted Do-jin leaning against a quiet, forgotten pillar, far away from the noise of the crowd. He was dressed in simple, worn clothes, but his brooding aura and melancholic beauty still drew nervous, longing glances from passing girls who wouldn't dare approach him. Today, he looked utterly exhausted, his skin dangerously pale; he had spent the entire previous night awake through grueling labor, coming straight to school without a single moment of rest.
The second her eyes landed on him, her face lit up with a warm, genuine, and radiant smile—a smile no one else in this entire school had ever been granted, one that whispered silently: You are my only safe harbor.
Shedding her royal composure without a second thought, Ji-hyun left her friends behind and broke into a run. "Do-jin!" she called out, her voice a fragile blend of panic and deep affection.
Do-jin slowly lifted his heavy head, his eyes half-closed from sheer weariness. But the moment they landed on her, the frozen lines of fatigue on his face dissolved completely, like snow beneath a spring sun. A soft, reassuring smile crept onto his lips, despite the bone-deep tiredness weighing down his frame.
"Why didn't you wait by the bus stop with us?" she scolded softly, pulling to a halt directly in front of him, entirely indifferent to the curious students passing by and staring with frank curiosity. She raised her hand, desperately trying to touch his pale cheek to check for fever, but teenage Do-jin, despite being seventeen, panicked violently and stepped back, his eyes darting around in nervous panic.
"Ji-hyun! Stop. Everyone is looking at you. You’re the school star now, stop acting like a child running through the halls," he hissed in a harsh, flustered whisper, desperately trying to mask his embarrassment.
Ji-hyun let out a bright, musical laugh, gazing at him with playful defiance, thoroughly amused by the shyness that hadn't faded despite the passing years. "And what do I care about the people? I'm just checking on my lucky charm. You may have grown tall, Do-jin, but you're still that same stubborn boy who needs someone to remind him to sleep!"
Inside the classroom during a quiet study period, the atmosphere was thick with concentration and heavy silence. Mid-way through the session, Ji-hyun noticed Do-jin’s head resting heavily against his wooden desk as he fought a losing battle against sleep, rubbing his temples in slow circles while his mind drifted from sheer exhaustion.
Waiting until the teacher’s back was turned toward the blackboard, Ji-hyun slipped quietly out of her front-row seat. Moving with practiced stealth, she walked down the aisle and gently set a large iced coffee—which she had bought in advance from the vending machine—right beside his textbook, not uttering a single word before darting back to her desk.
Do-jin stirred, his hand brushing against the cold condensation of the cup. He slowly raised his dark eyes, locking onto the iced coffee before shifting his gaze forward to catch the back of Ji-hyun’s head. A profound, aching wave of gratitude melted his cold exterior, and he whispered a quiet, barely audible thank you.
She nodded back with a calm, reassuring smile, as if nothing had happened.
This wasn't an isolated incident; it was a cornerstone of their silent balance. Later that afternoon, as Do-jin waited near the gates for his delayed bus, fighting a crushing wave of drowsiness, Ji-hyun materialized beside him. Silently, she pressed a small packet of nourishing vitamins into his palm, accompanied by a tiny, neatly folded sticky note written in her elegant, slanting handwriting: Take these now, and don't stay up late tonight! That's an order from your best friend.
Do-jin looked down at the note, a warm, radiant smile blooming across his tired face. He nodded slowly with absolute obedience. She understood his exhausting, silent battles, and he treasured the care that meant the entire world to him.
