What just happened?

I stood there, dumbfounded, watching the woman's unsteady figure retreat into the distance. Although she looked like a drunkard, ready to fall over at any moment, she was still an expert fighter, able to take down and toy with elite knights. And that powerhouse seemed like she was going to take my hand. To join our cause.

But at the last moment, she rejected me, Adeline Todd, the daughter of a Baron.

So what changed? I thought everything was going perfectly.
