Chapter 3:

A Confession with Jealous

The ocean land man

Julie’s father had begun to suspect that something was going on.

He had noticed that she had been sneaking out of the house late at night and returning in the early hours of the morning. Her behavior had also changed slightly.

She seemed happier, more distracted, and often lost in her own thoughts.

He couldn’t bring himself to ask her directly, so one morning, while they were having breakfast, he casually tried to approach the subject indirectly.

Julie immediately understood what he was getting at.

After a moment of hesitation, she asked, “Dad… if I liked someone who was a mermaid, would you accept him as my boyfriend?”

Her father froze for a moment.

The question was so far beyond anything he had imagined that he didn’t even know how to respond.

Then he sighed and shook his head.

“I told you not to watch too many dramas. This is what happens when you watch them all night.”

He laughed, assuming she was joking.

But Julie wasn’t.

She was genuinely confused about how she was supposed to handle everything.

Because somewhere along the way, she had realized the truth.

She liked Marik.

No matter what he was, no matter how impossible their relationship seemed, he was the one she loved.

And she wasn’t going to leave him anymore.

A smile appeared on her face as she thought about him.

Meanwhile, Yash had gone to meet Marik.

Marik was sitting quietly, holding Julie’s beaded bracelet in his hand. His eyes were closed, and he was smiling.

“Marik!”

Yash’s voice broke through his thoughts.

“Stop watching her and listen to me.”

Marik opened his eyes.

He had a strange ability. Whenever he touched an object, he could sense who it belonged to and see what that person was doing at that very moment.

That was how he had been watching Julie.

And seeing her smiling so sweetly had made him forget everything around him.

But Yash had come with something serious.

Marik listened carefully.

“I couldn’t hold them back any longer,” Yash said. “The Marina you created yesterday was too powerful. It reached the entrance to the ocean.”

Marik’s expression changed.

“They’re waiting for you. If we delay any longer, they’ll send people after us.”

He paused.

“We’re leaving soon.”

Marik remained silent.

“There’s one more thing,” Yash added. “Something is waiting for you there.”

His tone became serious.

“Be prepared.”

With that, Yash left.

Marik stared into the distance, his mind racing.

He understood how serious the situation had become.

But one thought troubled him more than anything else.

How was he going to tell Julie?

---

As usual, Julie and Marik met that night.

They sat together near the shore, enjoying the quietness of the ocean.

After a moment, Marik suddenly asked, “I heard humans eat fish casually. You eat them?”

Julie answered honestly.

“Yes, but not me.”

Marik looked at her curiously.

“Why? You don’t like fish?”

He paused before adding teasingly,

“Neither do you like me?”

Julie immediately shook her head.

“No, no! I like y—”

She stopped halfway through the sentence.

Marik stared at her.

He already knew exactly what she had been about to say.

A small snicker escaped him.

Julie looked away, embarrassed.

“It’s not that I don’t like fish,” she explained. “My mother prayed to the water god for a child for a very long time. Then she finally had me.”

She smiled faintly.

“She believed I was a blessing from the water god. Because of that, we never ate fish in our family. We only ate chicken.”

Her expression softened.

“Even after my mother passed away, my father continued living the way she wanted. He still loves her just as much as he did before.”

Marik listened quietly.

For some reason, everything she had told him felt like destiny.

He gently took her hand, comforting her.

Julie leaned her head against his shoulder.

Neither of them noticed the figure watching them from the shore.

Her father.

He had realized that Julie wasn’t at home and had gone looking for her. Eventually, he had come to the beach.

Before finding her, he had even asked Julie’s friends whether she had a boyfriend.

They had immediately denied it.

“No. If Julie had a boyfriend, we would know him.”

“And she doesn’t even message anyone,” another friend added. “If she had someone, her phone would expose her first.”

Her father had noticed something else, though.

“She hasn’t been getting enough sleep lately.”

That made his suspicion even stronger.

Then, from behind him, he heard Julie’s voice.

Her father turned.

He saw Julie sitting close to a shirtless young man.

What he didn’t see was the mermaid tail hidden beneath the water.

He only saw a young man sitting with his daughter.

“Julie!”

Julie immediately turned pale.

She whispered to Marik, “Go!”

But Marik didn’t move.

He already knew who the man was.

Julie’s father.

She insisted again.

“Please, go.”

Only then did Marik finally leave.

Because he had been standing with his back toward Julie’s father, the man never saw his face clearly.

He only saw him escaping.

Her father turned his anger toward Julie.

“Who was that?”

Julie quickly tried to calm him down.

“He’s just a friend, Dad. Nothing more.”

Her father clearly didn’t believe her, but he had no proof.

The next morning, Julie and her friends gathered at the beach as usual.

But this time, her friends had secretly planned something.

Nick was going to confess his feelings to Julie.

After Julie’s father had asked whether she liked anyone, her friends had decided that if Nick was ever going to tell her how he felt, he had better do it before someone else did.

Nick was nervous.

His friends encouraged him as he approached Julie.

Meanwhile, beneath the surface of the ocean, Marik and Yash were watching.

Marik had been worried about Julie, so he had dragged Yash along with him.

On the beach, Julie stood surrounded by her friends.

Nick slowly walked toward her.

Then he stopped in front of her.

He took a deep breath, pulled out a rose, and dropped to one knee.

Julie froze in surprise.

But beneath the water, Marik’s expression changed completely.

His fingers curled tightly.

Jealousy burned through him.

He could sense Nick’s intentions.

And he hated what he was seeing.

Yash immediately noticed.

“Marik…”

But Marik’s emotions were already getting out of control.

The ocean began reacting to him.

The calm waves became restless.

The water churned violently.

“What are you doing?” Yash asked, trying to calm him down. “Please, control yourself.”

But Marik couldn’t.

Suddenly—

An invisible force erupted from the water.

It struck Nick with tremendous power and sent him flying backward.

He crashed onto the sand.

Julie and her friends screamed in shock and rushed toward him.

Julie stood frozen for a moment.

Then she slowly turned toward the ocean.

Toward Marik.

Yash’s eyes widened.

They had hidden themselves so carefully.

Yet somehow, Julie had looked directly toward them.

She could feel him.

Without thinking, Julie ran into the ocean and dived beneath the restless waves.

“Julie!” Yash shouted.

She ignored him.

She swam deeper until she finally reached Marik.

He was still furious.

Julie didn’t hesitate.

She wrapped her arms around him and hugged him tightly.

Slowly, Marik began to calm down.

His clenched fingers relaxed.

He closed his eyes.

Then he wrapped his arms around her.

For a moment, everything became peaceful.

A faint smile appeared on Marik’s face.

Almost immediately, the ocean returned to normal.

The violent waves settled.

Yash stared at them in relief.

“Thank God she came,” he muttered.

He knew Julie was the only one who could calm Marik.

So he quietly left them alone.

Julie was struggling to breathe.

Marik noticed immediately.

He took her behind a large rock where they would be hidden from anyone on the shore.

Julie finally caught her breath.

Marik looked at her apologetically.

“I’m sorry. You had to hold your breath because of me.”

Julie looked at him.

“Why were you so angry?”

Marik hesitated.

Then he finally admitted,

“I can’t stand seeing you with another man.”

Julie blinked.

“When you told me that humans express their love like that… I realized what he was trying to do.”

His voice softened.

“I got angry.”

Julie gently asked,

“Why?”

Marik looked at her for a long moment.

He knew he could no longer hide his feelings.

He had originally planned to confess after meeting his father.

But now, he couldn’t wait.

“I like you, Julie.”

He took her hand.

“I want to spend the rest of my life with you.”

He swallowed nervously.

“Will you be my lover?”

He smiled faintly.

“I was planning to tell you after I came back from meeting my father… but I couldn’t keep it inside anymore.”

Julie’s eyes lit up with happiness.

“Yes.”

Marik stared at her.

“Yes?”

Julie smiled.

“I accept.”

His face immediately brightened.

He pulled her into his arms and hugged her tightly.

For a moment, they simply held each other.

Then Julie suddenly remembered something.

“Wait…”

She looked at him.

“You’re going somewhere, aren’t you?”

Marik became silent.

He knew he couldn’t hide it anymore.

“Yes.”

His voice was quiet.

“I’m going to meet my father.”

He looked toward the ocean.

“My home is there.”

Julie’s smile slowly faded.

“I was supposed to leave earlier,” he continued, “but I wanted to spend more time with you.”

He looked back at her.

“But I have to go now.”

Julie’s eyes filled with sadness.

“How long?”

Marik gently touched her face.

“Don’t worry. I’ll come back for you soon, my love.”

He smiled.

“My rest of my life belongs with you. I promise.”

He held her hand tightly.

“Wait for me.”

Julie swallowed her tears.

“When are you leaving?”

Marik hesitated.

Then, reluctantly, he answered,

“Today.”

Julie’s eyes filled with tears.

Marik pulled her into another embrace, comforting her as she cried against him.

Neither of them wanted to let go.

But eventually, they had to.

They stayed together for a final moment, holding each other as the waves moved gently around them.

Then they said goodbye.
