"But have you considered something?"
"Maybe this was never truly what you wanted."
"And maybe it was never truly what Lori wanted either."
Shane frowned.
Evan softened his tone and went on.
"A crisis like this makes people run from themselves."
"You put everything on Lori and Carl, as if keeping them alive meant nothing from the old world had really disappeared."
"Lori was a mother trying to survive with her son after she thought she was widowed. In that kind of fear, you became the person she leaned on."
"That wasn't the whole truth of either of you."
"Lori knows what she wants now. You're the one still standing in the same place."
Shane stared through him.
"Then... what am I supposed to do?"
He still thought of Lori, but the urgency had loosened. It was no longer absolute.
"Look around, Shane."
Evan spread one hand toward the walls.
"The Prison."
"This is where you put everything you are."
"Your real value is not in possessing Lori, and it is not in grabbing power for its own sake."
"It is here. In this place. In the people who can survive here because you are strong enough to help hold it."
"But... but..."
Shane's lips trembled. His voice rose.
"But you still haven't understood where your obsession leads."
Evan overrode him.
"I'm not saying your hard edge has no place. It does. Out here, fear can keep people alive."
"But fear by itself doesn't lead. It only teaches people to obey the man they are afraid of."
"You started fighting Rick over authority, and somewhere along the way you made Lori the visible prize in that fight."
"You convinced yourself that if you had Lori, then you had won. That you had power. That you had beaten Rick in a war neither of you ever named."
"But all you were really doing was pushing the group toward a cliff."
"Shane, in this dead world, division inside the group is collective suicide."
Evan grabbed him by the collar and looked straight into his eyes.
Shane's stare hardened and cracked at the same time. Shock sat there, and beneath it, shame.
Maybe even Shane himself wondered why the man in front of him seemed to understand him better than Rick did.
Then Evan let go.
"You say you still want to protect Lori."
The smell of beer still clung to Evan's breath.
"Do you know what Lori actually feels?"
"She told me she missed me," Shane said, clutching at the words like a rope. "She said she remembered what we had."
He stared hard at Evan, his voice already shaking without him noticing.
Evan sighed.
He had not wanted to drive the knife this deep.
But if he left it vague, Shane would keep circling back.
"Was that love?"
Evan's voice went thin and sharp.
Shane's heart dropped.
All color drained from his face.
"No... no, she wouldn't..."
He kept repeating it, but his skin grew paler with every word.
"When she needed someone to keep Carl and herself alive, that should have told you how much she values family over personal feelings."
"When Rick came back, Lori didn't confess everything and break the family open. She pushed you away. She told you it was over."
"So why did she come near you again?"
"Why did she reach for you while Rick was still there?"
"Why did she say things that could only make the family more unstable?"
Evan advanced one step at a time, taking away the last room Shane had to breathe.
"Don't push me," Shane whispered. "Don't push me..."
He backed away, hands clamped around his head.
Evan did not stop.
His next words cut deeper.
"Because she is afraid of you."
"Because she knows you, and that makes her afraid."
"She worries that your presence will threaten the stability of her family."
"Those words about missing you were a way to keep you steady."
"But maybe even she didn't realize they would do the opposite."
Evan held his gaze.
"Shane... Lori is pregnant, isn't she?"
The words hit like thunder.
Shane went rigid.
His body forgot how to tremble.
He had no idea how Evan could know. Evan had been in the woods training Carl when Shane learned the truth.
Shane wanted to deny it.
He wanted to shout that Evan had guessed wrong.
But no sound came.
Evan ignored the shock on his face and kept feeding the fire he had lit in Shane's mind.
"You want to protect Lori, but everything you are doing is still hurting her."
"That relationship is mud she is trying to crawl out of."
"She is not doing better than you. You are suffering, and so is she."
"Every time you reach for that bond, you add more weight to her mind and drag her closer to the edge."
"A pregnant woman under that much pressure, living inside a group that is coming apart in the apocalypse - how does that end?"
"Tell me, Shane."
"Tell me."
Evan's voice dropped into a growl.
Shane's knees buckled.
He hit the ground hard.
A sheen of sweat covered his face.
He dragged air into his lungs as if a stone had been set on his chest.
"She... she..."
Shane broke.
For him, in that moment, death might have felt like release.
When he looked up at Evan, the sharpness in his eyes had dulled. He still looked angry, but the anger had nowhere to go.
Evan had cornered him with strength, reputation, and words Shane could not shove aside. Fighting back now would only mean lying to himself.
And because Shane still had a conscience, he understood exactly why Evan's words hurt.
They were true.
Looking at Shane on the ground, Evan knew the night's purpose had been reached.
He crouched and drew Shane's head in with unexpected gentleness, not caring about the sweat in his hair.
His fingers, hard as iron, slid from the back of Shane's skull to the nape of his neck.
Then he pinched once, precise and firm.
Shane's trembling body stopped.
All the strength went out of him, and he slumped against Evan.
"That's enough. Sleep."
Evan's voice loosened, no longer pressing.
"Tomorrow will be better."
He rose and looked back.
At some point, Rick had come to stand nearby.
When Evan met his eyes, Rick gave him a silent nod.
Then Rick looked at Shane, his expression complicated.
In this miserable world, everyone needed some kind of release.
Didn't they?
