"The Source?"
Artemis looked at the dazzling golden motes and could not help asking, "What is the Source?"
"I have only heard that the Source is something like a symbol of a divine office. Possessing it means possessing the office itself, along with the powers that office grants."
Hippolyta could no longer remember where she had heard of it. Her understanding was fragmentary, and she had always believed it was only a legend. After all, she had never personally seen a god die, nor had she ever seen the Source.
"The Source comes from the Source Wall."
Damon's voice drew everyone's attention instantly.
He put away the Lasso of Truth and helped Diana up.
If Diana's expression had been complicated earlier because Damon had said there was only one of her, now it was complicated because she realized she had misunderstood.
He had not meant her.
He had meant the lasso.
"What is the Source Wall?" Hippolyta asked, hearing the name for the first time.
It was not only Hippolyta. Everyone was curious.
Damon, however, had no intention of explaining.
He pointed at the Source drifting in the air.
"I killed Eris, so I can claim that Source and become the new god of discord. But I am not interested in becoming a god I can kill with one punch."
Not interested?
Not interested in becoming a god?
This was godhood.
They had all seen Eris's power a moment ago. It had seemed invincible, unmatched. But after a second thought, it made sense. Eris, goddess of discord, had been incredibly powerful to them, but Damon had still blown her apart with one punch.
Who would value power weaker than his own?
"Artemis."
"Master."
Artemis answered at once.
Damon smiled.
"This Source is yours."
"Mine?"
Artemis pointed at herself in surprise. If she gained the Source, she would inherit the divine office and become the new goddess of discord.
And that chance belonged to her?
Instinctively, she looked at Diana beside Damon.
Why not give it to Diana?
"You do not want it?"
"No. No, I only..."
"Where is the decisiveness you had when you swore loyalty to me? Where is the nerve you had when you gave the God Killer sword to Diana? If you do not hurry, the Source will return to the Source Wall."
Damon laughed softly, then suddenly turned toward Diana.
Diana froze.
Then Damon hoisted her over his shoulder.
"We are not finished."
Laughing, Damon carried Diana back to the room.
This time, Hippolyta and the others did not look at him with the same anger and unwillingness as before. Their expressions were far more complicated.
Even Diana, slung over his shoulder, hesitated for an instant and did not struggle.
Back in the room, Diana was thrown onto the bed again, and Damon moved over her again.
This time, Diana did not bite him, nor did she attack. Instead, she pushed against his chest with both hands and spoke seriously.
"You cannot force me again. I still cannot forgive the harm you caused Themyscira, and I cannot forgive what you forced on me. But today, you saved Themyscira. If you stop damaging the island and release my people, I will not forgive you, but I will stop hating you."
"In other words, everything I did before gets written off? Including what I forced on you with the Lasso of Truth?"
Damon paused as he asked.
"Yes," Diana said.
"I refuse."
Damon smiled brightly.
"You refuse?"
Diana stared at him blankly.
"Why?"
"Look at it this way. First, I lose my status as slave owner. I do not care much about it, but it is still clearly a loss for me. Second, you only said you would stop hating me. You never said I could keep having you. Since you will not forgive me anyway, and since you cannot stop me, why should I give up a pleasure already in my hands just for one sentence about not hating me?"
He gave a light laugh and pinned Diana's wrists.
"People do not suffer most because they cannot get what they want. They suffer most when they do not even know what they want. I am very clear about what I want right now. I want you. So why should I accept suffering?"
"Besides, a bet is a bet. You lost the challenge, so you have to stay with me and make babies. What, is the princess of the Amazons going to break her word? Is that what Hippolyta taught you?"
His smile did not fade.
"So please, keep hating me."
"No. You cannot..."
Diana shouted and struggled, but she could not stop Damon's determined, brutal choice.
He forced her again.
Only after a long time did Diana shove him away, get off the bed, and point at him with disgust and fury.
"I hate you. I swear on my name as princess of the Amazons that I will not stop until you pay for this."
"So does our challenge agreement continue?"
Damon rolled lazily onto his back and smiled at the furious Diana.
Through it all, Diana had resisted and fought him. Yet that very resistance made him unable to let go of the feeling. No wonder some people liked force. Whether the other person resisted or yielded, it could feed a different kind of conquest.
"I hate you!"
Diana cursed him fiercely and turned to leave.
"That sounds like avoiding the question."
Damon muttered with a laugh.
After storming out, Diana soon stopped.
Among the crowd, Artemis sat on the ground, surrounded by golden sparks.
"Is that the Source? Has Artemis already gained it and become the new goddess of discord?"
Diana asked Hippolyta, who was walking toward her.
Hippolyta nodded.
"She should have, but she will need time to adapt to the power. Diana, are you... all right?"
Diana shook her head.
Hippolyta sighed and did not ask further.
She wanted to speak with Damon.
About Eris.
About the gods.
About the Source Wall.
She had a feeling Themyscira might never be as peaceful as it had once been.
Of course, Hippolyta would not go to Damon immediately after her daughter had come out. More than that, she had to keep watch over Artemis's condition. This might be the first birth of a new deity on Themyscira.
Artemis, however, showed no sign of waking soon.
So at noon, after Damon came to check on Artemis and prepared to stroll around the island, Hippolyta took the initiative and served as his guide.
Themyscira truly was beautiful. Many places famed for untouched natural scenery probably could not compare with it.
Damon thought Felicity would definitely like this place.
So maybe he should steal the Waverider from the Legends?
