Chapter 4:
One Piece: Zoro's Oath System
New log entry is up.
Grab a seat on deck. The sea is about to get loud.

Captain Morgan looked bigger from below.
Zoro hated that he noticed.
Memory had given him a shape: metal jaw, Marine coat, axe-arm, pride swollen so large it had stopped needing proof. A tyrant in a base too small for his ego.
Reality gave him weight.
The stairs groaned under Morgan's boots. Sun struck the axe fixed to his right arm and flashed white across the courtyard. Marines straightened as he descended, not with respect. With practice.
Zoro stood without swords, wrists bleeding, knees loose, and a mouth dry enough to taste dust.
Three ways to kill Morgan came to him.
All bad.
Too slow, too weak, too likely to put Coby or Rika in the path of the answer.
He hated being practical almost as much as he hated being unarmed.
Luffy did not look troubled by either problem.
"So you're the captain," he said.
Morgan's eyes moved from the straw hat to Zoro. "Who released him?"
Luffy raised a hand. "Me."
Coby whispered, "Why would you answer that?"
"Because I did."
Zoro flexed his hands. Blood had dried in the rope cuts. His swords were inside the base. Wado first. The other two after. Then the world would make more sense.
Get the swords.
Survive long enough to use them.
Morgan reached the courtyard floor. Helmeppo hid behind three Marines and pointed at Luffy with the hand not holding his pistol.
"Father, that pirate freed him!"
Morgan did not look at his son.
"Roronoa Zoro," he said. "You were ordered to remain bound."
"Did not like the order."
Several Marines went pale.
The axe shifted.
Small movement. Big line.
Morgan carried himself like reach solved everything. Heavy shoulder. Confident weight. If Wado were in Zoro's hand, there would be room under the swing.
Without Wado, there would be an arm on the ground. His.
Luffy stretched his shoulders. "Hey, metal-face."
Morgan's gaze sharpened.
"I'm taking him," Luffy said, pointing at Zoro. "He's joining my crew."
Coby looked like panic had tried to climb out through his eyes.
Morgan lifted the axe. "Pirates. Criminals, rebels, cowards. You think freedom means doing whatever you want."
Luffy blinked.
"Yeah."
He meant it so plainly that the courtyard seemed to stumble around the word.
Morgan's face hardened. "Fire."
The Marines hesitated.
That hesitation saved lives.
Rubber moved first. Luffy's arm snapped across the yard, fist hammering into the line of rifles before half the soldiers finished raising them. Metal clattered. Men shouted. Coby dropped flat with a yelp.
Zoro ran for the base.
Pride disliked the direction. Pride wanted Morgan.
Pride could wait.
Two Marines blocked the doorway. Young. Scared. Rifles up because fear had hands before it had courage.
Zoro ducked under the first bayonet and drove his shoulder into the Marine's chest. Pain flashed through his ribs. He used the impact anyway, slamming the first man into the second and keeping his feet only because falling would be embarrassing.
A hand caught his arm.
He took the wrist, twisted until fingers opened, and stole the rifle without firing it. Guns were loud, messy, and belonged to people who thought distance made them brave.
The rifle butt cracked into a knee. The barrel swept up into a chin.
Both Marines went down.
His hands shook after.
He ignored that.
Behind him, Luffy laughed at something no sane person would have enjoyed. Stone cracked. Someone screamed for formation. Morgan roared an order that sounded less like command and more like a man discovering the world had stopped asking permission.
Cool shade swallowed Zoro inside the base.
For one second, the sun stopped stabbing his eyes.
The room smelled of oil, sweat, and old paper. Confiscated weapons lined one wall. His swords sat behind a locked cabinet as if the base had mistaken them for trophies.
Three strides.
The lock was cheap.
The stolen rifle broke it.
His hand found Wado first.
The white hilt settled into his palm, and the whole room narrowed to a clean edge.
Kuina corrected his grip in memory. The dojo floor creaked under bare feet. A promise too large for a child's mouth returned with the weight of something he had already failed once by surviving her.
Another memory tried to rise with it: grade, name, future, reputation.
Zoro crushed that thought before it finished.
Fame belonged to stories and collectors.
Wado was a debt.
The other two swords slid into place at his waist. His hands knew the motion better than language.
Under his ribs, the oath tightened.
It was not a voice. Worse. A demand that did not need words.
"Yeah," he muttered. "I heard you."
The wall exploded.
Morgan's axe tore through plaster and wood, sunlight punching after it. Zoro threw himself back as debris filled the room. Splinters cut his cheek. Dust hit his tongue.
Morgan stepped through the broken wall like a walking execution.
Fast for his size.
Faster than memory had made him.
Zoro smiled despite the blood in his mouth.
This world still had teeth.
Wado and one other blade came free. His jaw throbbed at the thought of Santoryu. He was not putting Wado in his mouth while half-starved unless the world forced the issue.
Morgan's eyes fixed on the swords.
"You should have stayed tied."
"You should have raised a better son."
The axe came down.
Zoro saw shoulder, weight, wrist, line.
He stepped left.
The blade missed by a finger's width and buried itself in the floor.
His cut answered before Morgan pulled free. Steel scored through coat and opened a red line across the captain's ribs, shallow but real.
Morgan roared.
Pain bit into Zoro's shoulder.
Too much, too soon.
His arms knew the path. The rest of him had not earned it yet.
Morgan's backswing slammed into both swords and drove him across the room. He hit the weapon rack hard enough to knock steel loose around him. His knees buckled. A breath disappeared from his chest and did not come back clean.
Morgan advanced. "Your technique outruns your strength."
A laugh escaped as a cough.
"Working on that."
Another crash came from the courtyard.
Luffy's voice rang out, cheerful and furious at once. "Hey! I was fighting you!"
A stretched arm shot through the broken wall, wrapped around Morgan's waist, and yanked.
Morgan lurched backward.
Zoro did not waste the opening.
He rolled through scattered weapons, came up on shaking legs, and kicked Morgan's axe-arm from the side as Luffy pulled. The angle ruined the captain's balance. Morgan crashed back through the broken wall into the courtyard.
Following took longer than pride wanted.
Three weeks of rope, no food, and too many heroic ideas had opinions. They shared them through his shoulder, wrists, ribs, and knees.
Outside, chaos had bloomed.
Marines lay scattered across the courtyard. Some crawled. Some stared at their rifles as if the weapons had betrayed them. Coby crouched behind a barrel, trying to look brave and failing honestly.
Helmeppo had Rika by the arm near the far side of the yard.
The pistol in his hand trembled too close to her head.
The world narrowed.
Luffy saw it too.
The grin vanished.
"Let her go," he said.
Helmeppo's mouth twisted. "Do not move! I'll shoot her!"
Rika stood rigid, eyes wet and open.
Terrified.
Still not screaming.
Brave kid.
Zoro drew the third sword.
Wado touched his teeth.
The courtyard changed shape.
Three blades. Three distances. One shaking finger on a trigger.
He could not cross the yard before the pistol fired.
Luffy might reach Helmeppo, but the boy's finger was already tight.
Coby moved.
That surprised everyone.
Most of all, Coby.
The pink-haired boy threw himself at Helmeppo's legs with a desperate shout. The pistol jerked upward. The shot cracked into the sky.
Zoro was already running.
Pain tore down his shoulder.
He let it.
The first blade cut the pistol in half.
The second struck Helmeppo's wrist flat, hard enough to drop him without taking the hand.
Wado stopped a breath from the boy's throat.
Helmeppo froze.
Every Marine in the courtyard saw it.
Every Marine understood Zoro could have killed him.
Zoro chose breath instead.
For now.
Wado left his mouth.
"Run," he told Rika.
This time, she did not need a second invitation.
Coby scrambled after her, dragging Helmeppo down in the process. Helmeppo sobbed something about his father.
His father was busy.
Luffy met Morgan in the center of the yard with a punch that sounded like a cannon hitting meat.
Morgan staggered, then swung.
Rubber bent under the axe and snapped back with a fist into Morgan's jaw. Bone and metal rang together.
The captain hit the ground hard enough to shake dust from the walls.
He tried to rise.
Luffy planted one foot on the axe-arm.
"You hurt people because they were scared of you," Luffy said.
His voice had gone quiet. Somehow that made him sound more like himself.
Morgan snarled and shoved at the ground.
Luffy drew his fist back.
Zoro lowered his swords.
This belonged to the captain.
"Gum-Gum..."
Morgan looked up too late.
"Pistol!"
The punch drove Axe-Hand Morgan into the courtyard stones and ended his rule in a single stupidly direct line.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then one Marine dropped his rifle.
Another followed.
The sound spread through the yard, metal hitting stone one surrender at a time.
People looked at Morgan, then at one another, as if fear might punish them for noticing it had fallen down.
The crooked-helmet Marine was the first to bow his head.
Others followed, not to Zoro or even to Luffy exactly, but away from Morgan.
It was enough for the town to start breathing.
Zoro nearly fell when his own breath left him.
Wado kept him upright before anyone else could try.
Luffy noticed anyway.
"You okay?"
"No."
"Need food?"
"Yes."
"Great. We should eat."
Coby staggered over, white-faced and shaking. Dust streaked one cheek. "We almost died."
"First time?" Zoro asked.
Coby stared at him.
Then the boy's eyes sharpened through the panic.
"You saw where he was going to swing."
"He was holding an axe."
"Before he moved it."
Zoro looked at him.
Coby looked scared of what he had noticed, but he did not look away.
That could become dangerous later.
Luffy laughed, already bored with danger now that nobody was being crushed by it.
Zoro looked down at his swords, then toward Rika, who clung to her mother near the gate and stared at him like he had stepped out of a nightmare on her side.
The pain in his shoulder pulsed.
The oath did not congratulate him.
It stayed under his ribs like a knot pulled tighter.
Kindness protected.
Debt still unpaid.
Morgan lay broken in the dust. Luffy stood under the straw hat as if knocking down tyrants were only another way to ask for lunch. Coby tried not to collapse. Around them, Marines began to realize they had survived their own captain.
This was only Shells Town.
The weakest sea.
The beginning.
Somewhere far ahead, Mihawk waited with a little knife and a lesson sharp enough to split pride from bone.
Zoro's shoulder burned like fire.
He smiled anyway.
Pain meant the world was not impressed yet.
Fine.
He had not come here to be finished.
