Chapter 6:
One Piece: Zoro's Oath System
New log entry is up.
Grab a seat on deck. The sea is about to get loud.
✦
For a while after Morgan fell, Shells Town only listened to itself breathe.
The courtyard had been loud a moment ago. Boots, rifles, Morgan's orders, Luffy's rubber fist cracking stone, Coby shouting before he knew whether courage would arrive in time. Now the noise thinned until the town could hear small things again: a dropped rifle still rolling, Rika sobbing into her mother's skirt, a Marine swallowing too hard.
Morgan lay face-down in the dust.
At first, no one cheered.
Zoro understood that better than he wanted to. Fear did not leave a place in one clean step. It looked at the fallen man, checked his hands, checked the axe, checked the faces of the soldiers who had obeyed him yesterday, and only then considered making a sound.
Luffy stood over the captain with his hat crooked and his vest torn, looking as if he had knocked down a door and was already wondering what was behind the next one.
"Food?" he asked.
Coby made a noise like his soul had slipped on wet stone. "People are watching."
"They can eat too."
Zoro leaned on Wado Ichimonji because standing without help had become an ambitious hobby. His wrists burned under split skin. His shoulder pulled where Morgan's force had traveled through the blades. Hunger had gone past empty and become sharp.
The oath under his ribs did not praise him.
It sat there, hot and quiet, like a coal that refused to go out.
Rika's mother crossed the courtyard first.
That took courage. More than most of the uniforms had shown while Morgan was awake. She held Rika close with one hand and bowed with the other pressed over her daughter's hair.
"Thank you," she said.
Zoro hated gratitude when he had no pockets free for it.
"Don't."
The woman looked up.
"He used her because of me," he said. "I cut a pistol. The captain did the rest."
Luffy pointed at himself. "I'm the captain."
"I noticed."
Rika rubbed her face on her mother's skirt. "You ate my rice balls."
Luffy's head snapped around. "There were rice balls?"
"You were busy getting shot at," Coby said.
"I can do two things."
"You absolutely cannot."
Rika hiccupped, then laughed. It came out small and surprised, and half the courtyard seemed to flinch from how much it helped.
The first Marine to laugh was the young one with the crooked helmet. He smothered it fast, as if Morgan might sit up and punish him for being human. Morgan did not move.
Another Marine lowered his rifle the rest of the way.
Then another.
The town opened by an inch.
Zoro watched the soldiers instead of the civilians. Civilians had earned relief. The soldiers had earned memory. Some of them stared at Morgan with shame arriving late. Some looked away from Rika. A few stared at Luffy as if gratitude toward a pirate might get written into a file with their names underlined.
The crooked-helmet Marine stepped forward.
His fingers worried the rim of his helmet. He stopped two paces away from Zoro, close enough to speak and far enough not to pretend they were friends.
"Pirate hunter."
"Former."
The young man took that in. "Then... former pirate hunter."
"Ugly title."
"You made us see him."
Zoro glanced at Morgan.
"He was hard to miss."
The Marine's face reddened. "I mean Captain Morgan. Sir. I mean--" He stopped, looked at Rika, then forced himself to look back. "I mean we kept obeying because it was easier than admitting what we were obeying."
It sounded too clean for a man who had just discovered his spine.
Zoro let the silence roughen it.
"Do something different tomorrow," he said.
The Marine bowed, not low enough to make it dramatic. Just enough to hurt.
People began bringing food because no one knew what else to do with a victory that still had Morgan's bootprints on it.
Bowls arrived first. Then fish wrapped in paper. Rice. Pickled vegetables. Bread. Water in chipped cups. Someone brought meat, and Luffy's whole face changed.
"I love this town," he said.
"You met it today."
"Fast town."
Zoro meant to eat slowly.
His hands betrayed him after the second bite.
Rika's mother caught him before he tore the cloth on his wrist worse. She clicked her tongue and rewrapped the injury with clean linen while he held a bowl in the other hand.
"Stop moving," she said.
"I am eating."
"That is moving."
"Important moving."
Luffy stole a fish from his plate.
Zoro stole it back with the chopsticks.
Luffy stared. "You have hidden powers."
"I have priorities."
"I'm the captain."
"Captain can get his own fish."
Coby sat between them with both hands around a cup of water and the expression of a man watching civilization take damage from all sides.
Rika laughed again from the bench by the wall.
The sound belonged in the room more than any speech would have.
After a while, Luffy leaned back, patted his stomach, and looked toward the door.
"Okay. We can go."
Coby went still.
The room noticed him noticing.
Zoro knew the shape of this moment before it reached him. Coby wanted the Marines. Luffy would make it hurt in public because sometimes kindness needed witnesses and sometimes witnesses needed a lie they could live with.
Zoro could interfere.
He could explain it better, soften the edge, spare Coby the bruise.
Wado rested across his knees.
He kept his mouth shut.
Coby stood. His legs shook. His voice did too, but it did not vanish.
"Luffy-san. Zoro-san. I want to join the Marines."
Several townspeople stopped eating.
Uniforms had not earned trust here. Coby knew it. His face went pale, and he spoke faster before fear could drag him back down.
"Captain Morgan used the Marines to hurt people. The men under him let him. I let Alvida hurt people too. I know that. But if the Marines can be like this, someone has to go inside and be something else. I don't know if I can. I want to try."
The crooked-helmet Marine looked at the floor.
Luffy grinned. "Then do it."
Coby blinked. "You aren't going to laugh?"
"Why?"
"Because I'm weak, and I cry, and I was with pirates, and I don't know anything."
Luffy picked at his ear. "So get stronger."
Coby stared as if someone had handed him the sky and forgotten instructions.
Zoro took another drink of water.
"You'll be scared again," he said. "Do it scared."
Coby's eyes filled immediately.
"Don't leak into the soup."
He failed.
Luffy laughed hard enough to bump the table.
The Marines came in before the laugh finished.
The crooked-helmet one stood in front. His spine looked newly borrowed and badly fitted, but he kept it straight.
"Roronoa Zoro. Monkey D. Luffy."
Luffy waved with a bone in his hand. "Hi."
"We cannot ignore that you are pirates."
Coby's fingers tightened on his cup.
"Captain Morgan's crimes will be reported," the Marine continued. "Helmeppo is under guard. This base owes Shells Town an apology it cannot pay today."
The words scraped on the way out. Easy apologies were usually trash.
"You should leave before headquarters hears."
Zoro stood.
Every joint filed a complaint.
"Smartest thing a Marine said all day."
Luffy sprang up. "Boat time!"
"You still have food in your mouth."
"Boat food."
Coby followed them to the door and stopped where the Marines could see him.
This was the edge.
Luffy turned back with a grin so bright it looked harmless until the fist hit Coby in the face.
Coby hit the floor.
The room exploded in shouts.
Luffy pointed at him. "That guy was on a pirate ship. But he's not my friend."
Coby stared up from one elbow, one hand on his cheek.
Pain came first.
Understanding found him a breath later.
The Marines saw it too. A public break. An ugly kindness. A way for them to pretend distance existed long enough to let the boy apply.
Zoro walked for the door.
Coby scrambled to his feet and saluted with tears running down his face.
"Thank you!"
Luffy did not look back.
Zoro did, because apparently one captain with dramatic timing was enough for a crew.
"Write reports that tell the truth," he said.
Coby nodded like the order weighed more than the bruise.
Outside, the sea waited at the end of the street.
The boat was small enough to make the word generous. It floated, which put it ahead of several plans Zoro had known.
Rika ran after them before they pushed off.
"Zoro!"
He turned.
She held a cloth bundle in both hands. Rice balls, tied tight and lumpy.
This time no one stepped on them.
She threw the bundle with both arms. He caught it against his chest, and the impact made his shoulder flare.
Worth it.
"Don't sneak into Marine bases," he called.
Rika put both hands around her mouth. "Don't get tied to posts!"
Luffy laughed so hard the boat rocked.
Zoro sat down before the sea could make a fool of him. His swords lay across his lap. Wado's hilt pressed against his palm, cool and familiar. Behind them, Shells Town shrank into roofs, white walls, and people still learning the size of the silence Morgan had left behind.
The oath stirred.
It did not unfold in neat boxes. It did not congratulate him for choosing Luffy or pay him for surviving Shells Town. It settled deeper, tying the shape of the straw hat to the old promise under his ribs.
Follow him.
Do not surrender the dream.
Train before sunrise.
The last demand sank into his bones with the petty cruelty of a teacher who knew exactly when a man wanted to sleep.
If he ignored it, the sea itself seemed ready to punish him with wrong turns.
Zoro looked at Luffy.
Luffy looked back, chewing something he had not been chewing a moment earlier.
"What?"
"I hate mornings."
"Then sleep after morning."
Zoro stared.
His new captain smiled with complete innocence and no mercy whatsoever.
The boat drifted away from Shells Town, carrying them toward open water and every disaster waiting past the horizon.
His place in this world had a shape now.
It was not captain.
It was not passenger.
It was not a man hiding behind another life's memories.
First mate.
The words were heavier than the swords.
Zoro rested one hand over Wado and the other over the rice balls.
Heavy things were worth carrying.
