Chapter 2:
My Hero Academia: Izuku's Ninth Ledger

Take a breath. The next test is already starting.

Flying with All Might was nothing like watching him leap across a skyline.
From the ground, it looked impossible in the way posters were allowed to be impossible.
From his shoulder, it felt like being fired out of a cannon by a man who had never once considered that passengers might want instructions.
Wind slapped tears from my eyes. Buildings dropped beneath us. My stomach tried to leave by a different route. I locked both hands around the torn edge of his costume and held on with fingers that still smelled like sludge.
"Young man!" All Might shouted over the air. "This is extremely dangerous!"
I meant to answer.
I meant to say I knew. I meant to explain that danger was the reason I had grabbed him, that letting the day end in the underpass could cost the future its only chance at the right successor.
What came out was a torn sound between a cough and a whimper.
All Might adjusted midair.
One shift through his shoulder and hips turned the climb from pure terror into a controlled arc. My hands still screamed. My lungs still scraped. But the city stopped spinning long enough for me to understand he was trying very hard not to kill me by accident.
He landed on the roof of a mid-rise building hard enough to crack old concrete, yet somehow gentle enough that my knees only half-folded when he set me down.
I staggered, coughed, and grabbed the nearest ventilation unit. The metal was warm from the sun. Real. Solid. I pressed my palm flat against it until the rooftop stopped tilting.
Musutafu spread below us, bright and ordinary and completely insane.
Cars crawled through intersections. People pointed up at the sky. Somewhere below, sirens still chased the scene we had left behind.
All Might towered over me with one hand on his hip and a sealed bottle in the other.
"There!" he boomed, grin wide enough for every billboard in Japan. "You are safe now. Please wait for medical assistance and avoid attaching yourself to professional heroes in flight."
He turned as if that ended the matter.
My chest tightened.
"Wait."
He stopped. So did I.
One word had bought me half a second. Maybe less.
The boy whose memories I carried would have asked whether someone without a Quirk could become a hero. The man who had seen the story from outside knew what answer waited on this roof.
But with sludge still burning in my throat, the old question felt smaller than it had ever looked from a screen.
Could a Quirkless person become a hero? It mattered. It would always matter. It just was not the only wound standing here.
I knew about One For All. I knew about the monster hunting it. I knew about the smiling man in front of me spending his life by the minute and pretending the bill would never come due.
All Might glanced back. The bottle twitched in his hand.
I forced my eyes to stay on his face.
Too late. He noticed the effort.
"Young man?"
My tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. The fan question would have been safer. Easier. Kinder, maybe.
I swallowed and tasted metal.
"What kind of person would you trust with the future?"
The smile held.
Only his eyes changed.
For one breath, the rooftop was quiet enough that I could hear the bottle creak.
"That is a heavy question," he said.
"It should be."
My voice came out hoarse, and not as steady as I wanted. The wobble might have saved me from sounding rehearsed.
His gaze sharpened past the grin. "Most people your age ask what it takes to be famous."
"I don't want to be famous."
The lie was close enough to the truth to hurt.
The old Izuku had wanted recognition the way starving people wanted bread. I could feel that want under my ribs, embarrassed and alive. Fame was not what had dragged me under a villain's hand, though.
"Then what do you want?"
I looked at his hand instead of the bottle.
Massive. Steady. The hand that had pulled a villain off my lungs like the world still worked the way children believed it did.
"To move when everyone else freezes."
He did not answer.
The silence stretched until the system woke at the edge of my vision.

Emotional Pressure: high
Inheritance Route: active
Warning: excessive disclosure may destabilize outcome
My fingers curled against the ventilation unit. I kept breathing. In for two. Out for two. It did not make me calm; it only kept me upright.
All Might stepped closer. Rooftop gravel crunched beneath one massive boot.
"You moved today," he said.
"Barely."
"Barely is still more than most."
"Barely got me carried here by accident."
A corner of his smile weakened.
Behind the symbol, tiredness moved like a shadow behind a stage light.
"A hero should understand the difference between courage and self-destruction."
I almost said, Then teach me.
Too fast. Too clean. Too hungry.
I bit the words back and coughed instead. The cough scraped hard enough to bend me over. All Might's free hand lifted an inch, stopped, then lowered again.
That hesitation told me more than a speech would have.
"I don't know the difference yet," I said when I could speak. "I know that."
His brows rose.
It was not the answer he had prepared for.
"Professional hero work is not a story about effort winning every time," he said, quieter now. "It is violence, liability, rescue math, public panic, villain intent, and bodies that fail when ideals are not enough."
Every word sounded practiced.
Every word also sounded paid for.
The answer mattered, but the man giving it mattered too. He was trying to protect me from a door he had already walked through and never quite survived.
"I believe you," I said.
His expression flickered.
"Do you?"
"I think you're telling the truth. I also think truth can be incomplete."
The line came out more polished than I wanted. I heard it and hated it.
So I looked down at my shaking hands.
"Sorry. I mean, I know videos and notebooks aren't readiness. I know wanting to help doesn't make my bones stronger. I know I got lucky and still almost died."
His face changed at that. A small change. The public smile did not vanish, but something private leaned forward behind it.
"Then why ask me?"
Because his power was running out. Because his master had died fighting a monster still alive somewhere. Because the next successor was supposed to stand between the end of the world and everyone else.
Because if he left now, the future might choose someone who could survive the gift and lose the reason for it.
None of that could leave my mouth.
"Because I'm Quirkless," I said.
The truth, weaponized by omission.
He closed his eyes.
The billboard shine slipped a fraction.
"A person without a Quirk can still be brave," he said. "They can still help. They can still choose kindness, service, sacrifice."
His eyes opened again, and the care in them hurt worse than dismissal.
"But licensed hero combat is different. Against villains with lethal Quirks, courage alone becomes a corpse very quickly."
It was almost the answer I remembered.
Cleaner. More adult. More professional.
Somehow worse.
"So the answer is no?"
His jaw tightened.
"The answer is that I will not lie to you."
Pain rose so fast that for a moment I could not tell whether it belonged to me or to Izuku. Maybe the distinction did not matter.
"Thank you," I said.
All Might flinched.
Only slightly. Still enough.
"That is not the usual response."
"A lie would be easier."
"Yes."
"Easier answers get people killed."
The bottle creaked again.
This time his attention flicked downward before mine did.
The sludge inside pressed against the plastic, distorting the villain's trapped face into something wide and furious. The cap had not opened, but the seal looked wet.
Cold spread through my stomach.
In the story I knew, the bottle fell because Izuku clung to him during the jump. Here, I had already clung. We had already jumped. The villain was still contained.
The event had changed.
The bottle was still failing.

Event Anchor attempting correction
Priority: prevent uncontrolled release
The words did not give me a solution. They only named the cliff after my foot was already over it.
"The bottle," I said.
All Might looked down fully.
The cap hissed.
His hand tightened, but the villain surged against the plastic like a muscle cramping around an injury. Sludge squeezed through a hairline gap and splattered across his glove.
"No," he said.
It was quiet.
A man realizing one small mistake had not finished punishing him.
He moved to reinforce the seal.
Then he coughed.
Once. Hard.
The sound tore out of him like something with claws. His whole frame lurched. For a heartbeat, steam bled from his shoulders.
The massive outline flickered.
My mind knew what that meant. My knees did not. Awe shattered into horror.
"All Might?"
"Step back," he forced out.
The command was still there. So was the strain. His grin tried to return and failed.
Then the symbol collapsed.
Muscle drained away as if the air had punctured him. The towering hero folded inward, shrinking into a gaunt man with sunken cheeks, sharp bones, and blood at the corner of his mouth. His costume hung loose where it should have stretched.
Toshinori Yagi stood where All Might had been.
I had seen it before.
A screen had not prepared me.
The bottle slipped.
I lunged.
So did he.
My fingers brushed plastic. His caught the neck. For one insane second, we saved it together.
Then the sludge villain twisted toward the blood on his glove.
The cap popped.
The release was not an explosion.
It was worse.
Quiet.
A thick ribbon of sludge poured over Toshinori's wrist, hit the rooftop, and dove for the drain before either of us could trap it.
He slammed one hand down, cracking concrete, but the villain split around his fingers and vanished through the grate.
Silence followed.
Far below, a distant boom rolled across the city.
My stomach went cold.
Bakugo.
Toshinori looked toward the sound, horror naked on his ruined face.
The system flashed once.

I did not need the system to tell me what came next.
The future had bent.
It still knew where to bleed.
