Chapter 13:

Curve 13. Rami Ramiro Raminello of the Order of the Olivetan Congregation (Orolico)

Agnesi the Witch and the Quietus Cloud

It had been a week and three days since Agnesi, her parents, and her younger sister had arrived at their home near Lake Como. Pietro's twelve baggage wagons had returned to Milan to support Pietro's company's business activities. Two cavalrymen were escorting the wagons back. Two other cavalrymen remained in Como to escort Pietro's caroche back to Milan.

This morning, five men arrived at the house near Lake Como. They came from a place called Monte Olivo. One of the men was familiar to the Caetana family: Nuvolo Ardito Figliuoli.

Three of the four men who arrived with Nuvolo were his Epodoi-level bodyguards. What about the other person? The other person arrived in a four-wheeled wagon pulled by two horses. Nuvolo, Agnesi's former private tutor, was accompanying Agnesi's new private tutor: Rami Ramiro Raminello.

Rami Ramiro Raminello, commonly known as Rami in everyday life and Raminello in the academic world, has been Nuvolo's longtime friend since Nuvolo was a young explorer. Rami is currently around 35 years old, making him 19 years younger than Nuvolo.

Rami is a man with long, black hair that he ties neatly into a bun at the back of his head. He wears a distinctive hair tie, always red. The length of the hair tie is always the same length, with its loose end always reaching shoulder level.

One of the items Rami brought in his wagon was his stock of red hair ties. He brought about forty of them—allowing him to change them every day or so and wash the used hair tie immediately afterward. During the journey from Monte Olivo, Rami had changed his hair ties several times.

Rami, Nuvolo, and three bodyguards had traveled 430 kilometers. They departed from their starting point on the same day Agnesi's family arrived at their home near Lake Como. It took them approximately ten days to complete the journey.

Besides the considerable distance, another factor that was quite time-consuming was the administrative process. Rami was not a citizen of the Duchy of Milan, nor was he a citizen of any crown or kingdom within the Deutschtonia Empire. Therefore, he had to undergo the legalization process, which is mandatory for foreigners planning to work long-term in another country.

The journey for Rami and the four others could have been quicker if Rami had brought fewer belongings in his four-wheeled wagon. However, as someone who would be staying for an extended period at a house near Lake Como, Rami inevitably had to carry a lot of luggage. By this time, all of Rami's belongings had been moved from his vehicle to a room in Agnesi's house.

Agnesi's house had one bedroom for Agnesi, one for Rami, and two guest rooms, each of approximately the same size. There were also three smaller maid's rooms. Other rooms and facilities include two bathrooms, a kitchen, a private library, a living room, and a parlor. Other than that, the house has a very large backyard that is twice the size of its front yard.

The house's living room area features a small pond that can be used to keep fish. Agnesi's parents had asked her if she would like to keep fish in the pond, and she responded with a resounding no. According to Agnesi, keeping animals is no small matter and requires significant responsibility. Agnesi didn't want to inconvenience herself, Rami, or her maids.

The parlor was the venue for Rami, Nuvolo, and the Agnesi family's first meeting and lengthy conversation, which began at seven in the morning. Teresa also participated—by sleeping on Agnesi’s lap. Meanwhile, Nuvolo's three bodyguards did not participate. They chose to borrow three of Pietro's four caroche horses for a tour of Lake Como.

Nuvolo, a former explorer, actually wanted to do the same thing as his three bodyguards. It had been quite some time since Nuvolo had visited Lake Como. The lake is still within the Duchy of Milano and only about a nine-hour journey from his village. However, Nuvolo realized he had an important task to complete: introducing Rami to Agnesi and her parents.

At the time, Rami was wearing his "full" or formal uniform, indicating his membership in the Order of the Olivetan Congregation. This was evident in his white robe and a necklace with a circular plaque hanging from the end of the necklace. The order's logo was engraved within the circular plaque.

The Order of the Olivetan Congregation has the abbreviation—or nickname—"Orolico." In Aethalian, "Oro" means gold. In the Hellenika language, "Lico" means "wolf." Olivetan, on the other hand, comes from the Aethalian word "oliveto," meaning "olive grove."

That long name and nickname are what give rise to the objects that appear in the Orolico logo: a golden wolf's head facing to the lower left and a "kotinos" surrounding the wolf's head. The kotinos is a circle or crown of olive leaves, also known as an olive wreath.

The golden wolf head of the Orolico logo faces the lower left, or southeast. This symbolizes Monte Olivo, their headquarters, looking toward Kroton. Kroton was a city of that era, the same location where Pythagoras founded the Pythagorean Order two thousand years earlier.

The Order of the Olivetan Congregation is arguably one of the groups that still adheres to and practices the ideas of the original Pythagorean Order. They have their headquarters at Monte Olivo and several other communal living spaces for their members who are not on important assignments or work.

In Rami's case, he was on a mission for Orolico: raising funds for the Order's survival. Pietro paid Rami a handsome sum to tutor Agnesi. Rami's annual compensation supported many of Orolico's activities and other members.

Like the original Pythagorean Order, Orolico adheres to the concept of shared property ownership. Rami's payment from Pietro is channeled directly to Orolico. Orolico then uses the assets accumulated by its members for the organization's activities. Orolico also distributes these assets to support its members' daily lives, with each member’s share determined by their role and skills.

The skills considered when determining each member’s share of the wealth include a wide range of abilities. Practical skills such as farming, animal husbandry, and craftsmanship are among the skills considered by Orolico. Rami's Aecte and Aecte Arts skills are also considered.

A Mathematikoi-level Magoi like Rami was naturally sought after by wealthy individuals like Pietro as a private tutor for their children. Because of the substantial pay, Orolico allowed Rami to remain in Pietro’s employ for years, until Agnesi was accepted into an academy. Rami would only visit and stay at Orolico community facilities when Agnesi was on extended vacations.

When would Agnesi be accepted into the Academy? In a conversation with Nuvolo, Agnesi, and her parents, Rami predicted, “I think Miss Agnesi Maria Caetana will be accepted into the Academy as soon as she receives her anagnorisma, at the age of fifteen. That would be a quick process, compared to most people who don’t enter an academy until they’re seventeen.”

Pietro and Anna smiled proudly at the prediction. Their pride grew even more when Rami added, "Which academy will accept Miss Agnesi? I think, if Miss Agnesi continues learning at her current pace, she could be accepted into the top academy in Deutschtonia and one of the top two Magoi academies in the world: Py-Gewiss Academy."
