Chapter 13:
Warrior of Sorrow
“How boring. I thought for sure you would start a fight back there,” the evil god said with a sigh.
Luke’s jaw tensed. The urge to snap at the evil god bubbled beneath his skin, but he knew he couldn’t let the evil god get to him.
The evil god wanted him to feel negative emotions. Luke couldn’t let him succeed.
He took a calming breath and walked away from the monster hunter base, acting as if he hadn’t heard a thing.
While he had managed to find a way to earn money, it still didn’t solve his current crisis. He still had no money on himself, which would make it hard to find a place to sleep or grab a ride to his destination. Both required money he didn’t have.
Well, for the latter, he could try presenting himself as a monster hunter needing a ride and see if any vehicles would let him on for free.
However, that was for tomorrow.
As of right now, he needed to think about his sleeping situation. If he couldn’t find a place to rest, he would have to resort to sleeping outside.
It wouldn’t be the first time, but he would rather avoid it if he could.
Unfortunately, after going around the city for a couple hours, he couldn’t find anywhere that he could sleep.
Almost no one was willing to accept him without cash, and those that were had a shady vibe to them. There was no way he would accept those offers, which meant he was stuck sleeping on the ground outside. It was just a question of where was a good spot to sleep.
His eyes scanned the streets, searching for a decent spot to lie down for the night.
Luke couldn’t believe he found himself in this position. A hero who fought the evil god was forced to resort to sleeping on the streets. No one would be able to believe it.
“I wonder how your old comrades would react to seeing you like this. Do you think they will mock you?” the evil god whispered in his ear.
It wasn’t the first snide remark the evil god had made the last couple of hours, but Luke wasn’t in the mood to put up with it any longer.
“Don’t you ever shut up,” Luke snapped, grateful that there was nobody nearby to hear him.
“What else can I do since you won’t let me attack the innocent or create monsters to attack people?” the evil god pointed out.
“That’s your problem. Not mine,” Luke said as he walked through the streets to find a place to rest.
Suddenly, he felt nails dig into his side and hissed.
“Don’t forget. You’re my warrior. I can do anything I want to you, and you won’t be able to do anything about it,” the evil god hissed.
The pain quickly subsided, but the threat hovered over Luke’s head like a guillotine. He swallowed hard as he felt cold sweat trail down his back.
“What do you want?” Luke asked, wary of provoking him.
“You already know what I want. You’re just unwilling to help me,” the evil god said.
“I can’t imagine I’m your only warrior. Why not bother the others?” Luke countered.
Though he hated the idea of encouraging the evil god to cause havoc elsewhere, he hated even more how the evil god lingered around him like a ghost haunting him.
Besides, they still had their deal. The evil god couldn’t hurt innocent people or create monsters so Luke wouldn’t be harming anyone by chasing the evil god away. The amount of harm the evil god could do would be minimal.
“That’s where you’re wrong. You’re the first warrior I’ve ever had,” the evil god said.
He considered the evil god’s words before asking, “What does it mean to be your warrior? Why don’t you have other warriors?”
“It basically means you represent me. If Fidall were to choose someone as his warrior or champion, you two would face off to fight in our names,” the evil god said.
Luke grimaced.
Why would he ever want to fight in the evil god’s name?
If he had no choice except to fight Fidall’s champion to the death, he would rather throw the match on purpose than let the evil god win.
“I wouldn’t be too sure about that,” the evil god said.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Luke snapped.
“I’m saying Fidall isn’t as great of a god as you think he is. If you knew the real story, you would find him even more disgusting than me,” the evil god said, a layer of frost coating his words.
He found that hard to believe.
Fidall was the god of wonders, joy, and all things good in the world. He was the complete opposite of the evil god who had only brought harm to the world. There was no way Fidall would be worse than the evil god.
Luke finally selected a spot and settled down on the cold, hard ground. He frowned, trying to make himself comfortable.
“Are you really going to sleep here?” the evil god asked.
“Go away,” Luke mumbled.
“You know sleeping here is just asking for you to be attacked in your sleep. While I find your pain amusing, I would rather you don’t die,” the evil god said.
“Maybe if you could give me money, then I wouldn’t have to resort to this,” Luke shot back.
“You could have simply stolen money from someone or threatened those low-lives wanting to take advantage of you so you could sleep in a building,” the evil god countered.
“Just because I’m your champion doesn’t mean I’m going to resort to evil,” Luke snapped.
“But it’s only towards those you perceive as innocent. If they’re scum, what’s the harm in pushing them around?” the evil go said.
When the evil god put it like that, it did make some sort of twisted sense.
If the people he was dealing with were criminals, why bother treating them with decency?
