Chapter 13:
Naruto: Shadow Clone System
Mission update is live.
Get comfortable. The village is watching.
✦
He made it home before the adrenaline ran out.
Barely.
The apartment door shut with a cheap wooden click, and the silence on the other side did not feel like safety. Same stained ceiling. Same narrow bed. Same sad army of ramen cups. Same window looking out over a village that had never decided whether he was a citizen, a weapon, or a problem someone else had failed to solve.
Same room.
A different life.
Two forehead protectors lay in his hands.
One was Iruka's, still marked by the forest. The other was clean and official, issued by the Hokage after a conversation that looked like kindness and felt like walking barefoot through traps.
He set Iruka's headband on the table with more care than the table deserved.
"We keep that one."
The room said nothing.
His ribs tightened anyway.
Pride, grief, relief, hunger, exhaustion. They knotted together under his sternum until he could not tell which feelings belonged to the boy who had lived here and which belonged to the man wearing his face.
Maybe the difference would stop mattering.
The thought made his skin crawl, so he went to the sink and drank cold water straight from the tap.
His reflection in the dark window looked back with whisker marks and eyes too awake.
There was no chime and no blue text.
The change arrived as pressure behind his eyes, then settled. The first lesson was finished. Something between him and clone memory had shifted into place, thin as paper and about as comforting. The next time feedback came, it would not hit him with the full weight of a collapsing wall.
The relief lasted one breath.
ROOT had a reason to write his name twice now.
Danzo sat like mold in the walls of every bad Konoha decision he remembered. A jinchuuriki who exposed a traitor, learned a forbidden technique, survived Kakashi's test, and left the Hokage with a managed version of the truth was not staying a footnote.
Knowing that did not make it easier to swallow.
"No stats?" he asked the window.
His reflection offered him an eighteen-year-old face and no mercy.
"No shop? No beginner package? No conveniently balanced starter sword?"
Nothing.
"Cheap system."
His own voice faded into the room.
He sat on the bed and let himself shake.
Ten seconds.
Only ten.
After that, collapse became indulgence, and indulgence belonged to people with fewer enemies.
The table needed to exist before a plan could. He threw old cups into a bag, pushed laundry into one corner, and wiped dust away with a damp rag. The apartment resisted dignity with impressive commitment.
He imposed it anyway.
Academy paper. Half-dry ink. Three headings.
Physical limits.
Reputation.
Information.
Under Physical limits: stamina, taijutsu basics, flexibility, chakra control, clone tolerance, sleep, food.
Food got underlined twice.
Under Reputation: Iruka, Hiruzen, Team Seven, Academy cohort, civilians, clans.
Under Information: Mizuki interrogation, Danzo, Wave timing, D-rank schedule, Kakashi habits, Sakura's ambitions, Sasuke's triggers.
It looked childish.
It looked alive.
He added one more word beneath the headings and immediately hated how practical it was.
Money.
Power fantasies loved pretending logistics were for side characters. Shinobi tools cost money. Better food cost money. Sealing supplies would cost money if he ever found a way to buy them without alerting half the village. Even ramen was not free, and the apartment's finances looked like a joke told by someone cruel.
Power needed logistics.
Logistics needed cash.
Cash needed channels.
That was the annoying adult part again. He could not suddenly buy weights, storage scrolls, better food, and sealing ink without someone asking where a hated orphan found the money. Even honest work had politics here. Mission pay passed through village systems. Side jobs meant civilian eyes. Gambling was stupid. Theft was tempting in the way cliffs were tempting to people who forgot gravity existed.
Small first.
Food. Bandages. Wire. Blank paper. Things a new genin could buy without starting a report.
He wrote ramen, crossed it out, and wrote nutrition above it.
His stomach considered this betrayal.
"You'll live," he muttered.
The cross seal formed.
One clone appeared in smoke, landed steady, and looked down at the paper.
"We're making a murder spreadsheet."
"Training plan."
"That is what I said."
He made a second clone.
The new one squinted around the room. "First mission: stop living like a condemned bachelor."
"We're eighteen."
"Emotionally, this kitchen is forty and divorced."
He pinched the bridge of his nose.
The headache came slower now. Present, but not stabbing. The new filter was not a miracle. More like cloth nailed across a broken window during a storm. Pressure still got through. The frame still rattled. The room did not flood immediately.
"One of you cleans. One stretches and reports fatigue."
The cleaning clone looked betrayed. "We have a system and I get dishes?"
"The system gave us no maid."
"Cheap system," both clones said.
"Focus."
They did.
For twenty minutes, the apartment became the strangest training ground in Konoha. One clone attacked ramen residue with the fury of a man avenging generations. The other moved through Academy stretches and basic stances, reporting tight calves, stiff shoulders, decent core, poor left-side balance, good recovery, shaky fine control after sustained chakra use.
He wrote as fast as the ink allowed.
Then he dispelled the stretching clone.
Memory returned.
Less pain.
Still enough to make his jaw lock.
Muscle pull behind the knee. Weight drifting right during stance transitions. Breath too shallow after nine minutes. Chakra buzz under the skin after sustained clone existence. Annoyance at being watched by himself like a lab experiment.
He wrote that down too.
The cleaning clone stared. "If you dispel me now, you get sink trauma."
"Educational sink trauma."
"Abusive workplace."
"You're me."
"Exactly. Unionize."
He dispelled him.
The sink became emotionally significant in a way no sink deserved.
He groaned and dropped his forehead to the table.
The filter helped. It did not remove the existential irritation of doing chores twice.
He would take it.
No free lunch. No painless multiplication. No infinite clone abuse without cost. If the system handed him easy power, the world became trivial, and trivial worlds killed people the moment they stopped being polite.
Limits meant he could measure the danger before it measured him.
He updated the page.
Safe clone load after exhaustion: one or two for domestic or training tasks.
Combat burst: thirty to fifty possible if someone might die; severe cost; avoid unless trapped.
Public ceiling from Hiruzen: five.
Public behavior: three unless crisis.
The last line mattered most.
Hiruzen had banned high numbers unsupervised. Naruto had agreed to report dangers to the village. He had not agreed to hand over the keys to the inside of his skull.
That balance would define everything.
Hiruzen: helpful when watched.
Danzo: blind if possible.
Kakashi: curious, never comfortable.
Sasuke: challenged without being cornered.
Sakura: given proof before speeches.
Iruka: alive, close, and protected from becoming leverage.
He leaned back and stared at the ceiling.
Wave.
The word arrived cold.
Tazuna lying about mission rank. Demon Brothers. Zabuza's sword. Haku's mask. A bridge named for hope and paid for in blood. Team Seven's first real taste of what shinobi did when ideals met money.
In the old story, they survived because Kakashi was there and destiny enjoyed dramatic timing.
He did not intend to trust destiny.
Before Wave came D-ranks. Cats. Weeds. Babysitting. Humiliation disguised as work. Sakura and Sasuke would hate them in different directions. Kakashi would learn from what they complained about. Naruto would learn from what civilians paid for, which streets shinobi ignored, which shopkeepers lied with a smile, and which routes made watchers lazy.
A D-rank was embarrassing only if he treated it like wasted time.
Information wore stupid clothes all the time.
He needed tree climbing before Wave. Water walking if possible. Basic sealing theory if he could touch it without setting off every watcher in the village. Wind nature later. Maybe sooner than the old path, but not soon enough for Kakashi to start counting ghosts in his eyes.
That was the constant irritation.
He was a different person overnight.
The trick was convincing everyone that pressure had finally knocked Naruto into a better shape.
Maybe that was not entirely false.
He stood and crossed to the window.
Konoha spread outside in lantern light. Somewhere out there, Sakura was probably replaying the lunch test and hating that anyone had seen her choose. Sasuke was likely training until almost touching a bell stopped tasting like failure. Kakashi might be at the memorial stone, filing three living students beside old ghosts and pretending the difference did not scare him.
And Danzo was reading reports.
Naruto looked down at the street.
For half a second, a shape seemed to wait in the alley across from the building.
Gone when he focused.
His mouth went dry.
Passive observation.
Already?
Anger followed the fear, clean and bright.
The village had watched a child suffer for years and called it containment. It would not get to watch him become capable and call that ownership.
He returned to the table and added a fourth heading.
Enemies.
Under it, he wrote one name.
Danzo.
After a long moment, he added another.
Ignorance.
Then:
Loneliness.
That last one made him uncomfortable enough to cap the ink bottle too hard.
He would take it.
Uncomfortable meant important.
A soft pulse moved behind his navel.
It was not an attack. More like attention, amused and ancient.
He refused to look inward.
No conversations with the fox. Not tonight. Not while control was thin and the wounds were still fresh enough for claws.
"Later."
The pulse faded.
Maybe the Kyuubi understood.
Maybe it was laughing.
Either way, later.
The plan went under a loose floorboard after two checks for obvious seals he did not know how to find. The hiding spot would not fool a real search. It only needed to be less stupid than leaving treason-adjacent notes on the table.
He ate another cup of ramen and forced down more water.
Tomorrow, Team Seven began the embarrassing part of being official.
Kakashi would test them with boredom. Sakura would watch Naruto with irritation sharpened into curiosity and still make her own calls. Sasuke would measure him without asking directly. D-rank humiliation would become training data if he was careful and a comedy routine if he was not.
Tonight, he had survived the tutorial.
He touched Iruka's headband once before bed.
"First step."
Far under another part of Konoha, Danzo Shimura closed the report on his desk.
The operative kneeling before him did not move.
"No direct contact," Danzo repeated. "No pressure. No visible hand."
"Yes, Danzo-sama."
"Let Hatake test him. Let Sarutobi comfort him. Let the jinchuuriki believe the village is still deciding what he is."
Danzo's visible eye rested on a line written by one of his watchers.
Subject plans before emotional escalation.
That, more than the forbidden technique, interested him.
"If the jinchuuriki is learning to think," Danzo said, "then Konoha cannot afford to let him choose his own lessons."
