Chapter 46:

Breaching the Sanctuary

Mad Magus

The vault stretched deep into the mountain’s heart, its walls carved from living stone that wept thin streams of water. Torches flickered in iron sconces, casting dancing shadows across a floor slick with blood.

Renji stepped through the iron door, Pochi raised before him. The wolf skull’s empty sockets glowed faintly in the torchlight, responding to the dense mana saturating the air.

Bodies lay everywhere. Monastery guards in ceremonial armor and priests in white vestments stained crimson sprawled across the flagstones, their wounds clean and precise.

Kevin Krueger stood at the vault’s center, where the Prime Rift pulsed like a wound in reality. A massive null steel axe rested on his shoulder as casually as a farmer might carry a hoe. His coat was immaculate despite the carnage around him. He turned as Renji entered, his handsome face breaking into a pleasant smile.

“Sorry for the intrusion,” Renji said, stepping over a fallen priest.

“Good evening,” Kevin replied, his voice warm and conversational. “Sorry for the mess. What can I do for you?”

The Prime Rift loomed behind him, its edges crackling with shifting light. Unlike the smaller rifts Renji had sealed, this one radiated an ancient hunger, bending light and sound around it.

“I need to meet the High Priest,” Renji said.

“Do you have an appointment?” Kevin asked.

“Sorry,” Renji replied. “I haven’t.”

“He isn’t available,” Kevin said, his smile widening, “in one piece.”

He reached behind a stone altar and lifted a mass of gray hair. The High Priest’s severed head dangled from his fist, the face frozen in shock. Blood dripped onto the stone, pooling at Kevin’s feet.

Renji looked from the head to the rift.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” Kevin said, tossing the head aside. It rolled across the flagstones. “My comrades are on the other side of it.”

“Your comrades?” Renji asked.

“We are the superior race.” Kevin spread his arms wide. “We just want to enter this world and make it our new home.”

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.

“What will happen to humanity?” Renji asked.

“The inferiors will serve us or perish.” Kevin’s voice lost its warmth. “Survival of the fittest.”

“You want to destroy our world.” Renji’s voice was flat. “Flood it with monsters.”

“I’d prefer to call it redecorating.” Kevin shrugged. “How about you join us? We can share the rule of this world together.”

“I don’t want to be a monster like you,” Renji said.

“But you already are.” Kevin’s eyes gleamed with admiration. “You just don’t accept it yet.”

Renji’s gaze dropped to the floor. A massive rune had been carved into the stone, its lines traced in fresh blood, spiraling outward from the Prime Rift.

“Is this your doing?” Renji asked.

“Yes.” Kevin stepped aside, gesturing at the rune like a proud artist presenting a masterpiece. “This is to call my comrades from the other side.”

He paused, studying Renji’s expression. “You want to close this rift with your device, don’t you? Unfortunately, this rift is stronger than the others. You’ve succeeded in cutting tree branches with your machine, but this one is more like a tree trunk.”

“So there is no compromise,” Renji concluded. “Pochi and I will defeat you.”

“Not every conflict can be solved by talking.” Kevin lifted the axe from his shoulder, the null steel catching the torchlight. He glanced down at the blade, paused for a beat, and grinned. “I... and Felix accept your challenge.”

“Did you just name your axe on the spot?” Renji muttered.

“Am I not allowed to?” Kevin grinned.

“You’re such a joker,” Renji said.

“So are you.”

Kevin blurred.

One moment he stood ten paces away; the next, he was behind Renji, the null steel axe whistling toward his neck. The shimmering barrier rippled outward from Renji’s skin, stopping the blade a breath away from his throat.

“Oh, a yin mana barrier.” Kevin’s cackle echoed off the vault walls. “At least your skills are no joke.”

Renji spun, Pochi’s jaws snapping at Kevin’s face. The man danced backward, his axe sweeping in a wide arc that forced Renji to leap onto a fallen pillar, mana silk already spinning from his fingertips.

“You’ve learned some interesting tricks,” Kevin observed, circling. “The bat wings, the spider silk, the yin barrier. You’ve been eating well.”

“I try to eat healthy,” Renji replied.

He flicked his wrist, sending silk forward in a dozen strands. Kevin twisted, dodging most of them, but several wrapped around his legs. Renji pulled him off balance.

Kevin remained upright as his body contorted. Bones transformed beneath his skin, his jaw stretching until teeth sharpened into triangular fangs. Olive-green scales ripped through his tailored coat, his frame elongating into a tall, reptilian silhouette with a whip-like tail and obsidian claws.

“We just met, and you’re already naked?” Renji commented.

Kevin hissed. “Modesty is a human weakness.”

He lunged. Renji barely dodged, claws raking across his barrier in a shower of sparks. He countered with a lightning bolt, but Kevin absorbed it, electricity crackling harmlessly across his scales.

The fight became a blur of motion. Kevin’s axe clanged against Pochi as Renji responded with ice spears, wind blades, and fireballs, each spell forcing Kevin to adapt.

“You’re holding back,” Kevin observed, breathing hard. “Afraid to use your full power?”

“I’m just warming up,” Renji said.

He reached out with water magic, pulling moisture from the air and the weeping stone walls. A torrent swept across the vault floor, washing over the blood rune and dissolving the symbols into pink smears.

Kevin snarled. “Clever. But not clever enough.”

His bones reshaped once more as his form swelled, expanding far beyond his reptilian shape into a massive Earth Dragon. The axe clattered to the floor, forgotten as his hands hardened into heavy talons.

“I guess that’s not your final form,” Renji commented.

Kevin’s response was a fireball the size of a boulder.

Renji dove behind a stone pillar as the fireball exploded against it, showering him with molten fragments. He rolled, coming up with Pochi raised. A second fireball forced him to take flight, bat wings carrying him toward the vault ceiling.

“Renji, where are you?” Gio’s voice crackled from the communication device at his collar. “The monastery is burning.”

Renji dodged another blast. “I’m in the vault with the Prime Rift, fighting a giant lizard.”

“Where is it?” Gio asked.

Kevin’s jaws opened wide, a glow building in his throat. Renji didn’t wait to see what followed.

He flew toward the vault entrance with Kevin’s dragon breath chasing him. The explosion caught the heavy iron doors, launching them outward like leaves in a hurricane. Renji burst through the opening, riding the shockwave as his wings strained against the superheated air.

The night sky opened above him, stars visible through the smoke rising from the burning monastery.

“Oh, that location,” Gio noted the explosion, her voice remarkably calm.

Renji gained altitude with Kevin right behind him. The dragon burst through the shattered vault entrance, sprouted leathery wings, and launched into the night with a roar that shook the peak. Below, the monastery grounds had descended into chaos as fires spread, priests fled, and soldiers scattered.

The Veil Sealer Company entered through the main gate in tight formation. Elder Malin led the way, with the La’Shido mages marching in perfect unison behind him.

“The resistance is light,” Gio reported through the device. “Most of the guards and priests have fled or died.”

“Good,” Renji said, banking hard to avoid Kevin’s snapping jaws. “Get the Friendship to the vault. The Prime Rift is there.”

“We’re on our way.”

Renji led Kevin on a chase through the burning monastery, weaving between towers and over courtyards. The dragon’s breath carved molten scars across the stone, but Renji kept moving, keeping the beast focused on him.

Below, the Veil Sealer Company passed through the courtyard. The La’Shido mages took positions around the vault entrance with staffs raised while the Friendship rolled forward on tracks, its arrays glowing with gathered power.

Renji led Kevin away from the monastery toward a nearby river. He banked hard, turning to face the beast directly as it hovered over the running water, wings beating slowly against the dark sky.

Renji raised Pochi high, and the wolf skull’s jaws opened wide.

“I am Kamiya Renji,” he declared. “And I will not let you destroy my world.”

Kevin roared and charged.

Inside the vault, the Friendship hummed with energy, its arrays blazing as the Prime Rift shuddered and began to seal.
