Chapter 3:
Schadenfreude Occidental Act I
Ensnared within the infernal architecture of Roxanne Roseburn’s evolved Abstract Style—Dante’s Inverted Tower—the three Demon Lords of House Galan had already endured horrors capable of breaking lesser beings.
The First Floor had unleashed an army of three thousand skeletal knights, each warrior wreathed in flame and driven by an endless hunger for battle.
The Second Floor had plunged them into a Neptunian abyss—an ocean composed entirely of liquid fire. With Jett propelling them through the burning tides, the trio had battled colossal creatures that swam beneath the molten surface like beasts born in the belly of a dying star.
The Third Floor had recreated the Yasei Exotica according to Roxanne’s twisted imagination. Every living thing within the wilderness had turned against them, from swarming insects to enormous beasts whose footsteps shook the entire construct.
Yet despite those trials, the Demon Lords had suffered only minor setbacks.
Their true enemy had been exhaustion.
Every ability they invoked consumed a portion of their energy, and with each passing floor, those reserves continued to diminish.
When the doors to the Fourth Floor finally opened, Orochi Hanzo, Hosanna Sun, and Archibald stepped into a panorama unlike anything they had witnessed before.
Color no longer existed.
The world before them was composed entirely of black, white, and countless shades of gray. Even their skin, clothing, hair, and flames had been stripped of their natural hues.
Vast hills rolled across the monochromatic horizon. Between them, naturally formed vents protruded from the ground, occasionally belching columns of black fire into the lifeless sky.
Hanzo’s eyes narrowed.
“Step back.”
A trace of fatigue weighed upon his normally unwavering voice.
“Something is moving beneath us.”
The three Demon Lords immediately withdrew.
The ground split.
Two crooked branches emerged from the soil and twisted around one another like serpents. Their limbs flattened and reshaped themselves until they formed a wooden sign.
Burned across its surface were the words:
FIFTH FLOOR
An arrow pointed toward a long path disappearing over the distant hills.
Hanzo stepped forward.
“Stay close.”
He took the lead, guiding Hosanna and Archibald along the black-and-white road.
Several moments passed without incident.
Then Hosanna looked upward.
Her instincts warned her before her mind could understand what she was seeing.
The Fourth Floor had awakened.
Small crimson flames began drifting from the pale sky.
Against the colorless landscape, their brilliant red glow appeared almost beautiful. They descended gently, floating like tufts of cotton carried upon a winter breeze.
Hosanna raised one hand.
A single flame landed upon the tip of her finger.
It stung.
Her expression tightened as the flame suddenly changed from crimson to a sickly grayish blue. An instant later, it vanished in a small plume of smoke.
Hanzo witnessed the reaction.
His eyes widened.
“Use Jett!”
Urgency sharpened his command.
“Now!”
The three Demon Lords leapt into the air.
Streams of red, orange, and golden fire burst from the soles of their feet, carrying them over the rolling hills at blistering speed.
They raced along the indicated path.
Behind them, the cotton-like flames began to change.
Their delicate forms melted into droplets.
Soon, burning rain poured from the heavens.
Each drop struck like a needle of heated steel, stinging the trio’s bodies again and again as the storm intensified.
“Archibald!”
Hanzo glanced toward the youngest member of their formation.
“Take the front!”
Archibald accelerated ahead of them.
He already understood Hanzo’s intention.
“Abstract Style…”
He raised both hands.
“Sanctify!”
Three canopy-shaped barriers materialized above the Demon Lords. Each shield resembled a radiant halo stretched wide enough to protect its wielder from the falling fire.
The burning droplets hissed against them as the trio continued through the monochrome world.
Archibald listened carefully.
“Do you hear that?”
“Yes,” Hanzo and Hosanna answered together.
Far behind them, a deep horn bellowed through the Fourth Floor.
The note was followed by a violent quake.
Then another.
Hanzo’s expression hardened.
“Her horn.”
“And the impacts of her warhammer.”
“Shula is gaining on us.”
He increased his speed.
“We cannot slow down.”
Hanzo looked toward Archibald.
“How much strength do you have remaining?”
“Enough to sustain Sanctify,” Archibald answered through labored breaths.
“But nothing stronger.”
“That will have to suffice.”
They pressed onward.
The path seemed endless.
Nothing moved across the pale hills. The black vents ceased erupting, and even the fiery rain began to weaken.
The sudden calm unsettled Hanzo.
It was too quiet.
Hosanna felt the hairs along the back of her neck rise.
“Hanzo…”
Her eyes searched the horizon.
“What’s coming?”
“Is this Shula’s S-Style?”
Before Hanzo could answer, the wind began to howl.
A violent current swept across the hills, pushing against the three Demon Lords with enough force to slow their flight.
The winds intensified.
Within seconds, they twisted into monstrous cyclones.
Hanzo did not know whether the phenomenon belonged to Shula or the Fourth Floor itself.
His only option was to continue.
“Forward!”
The trio forced more energy through their Jett abilities.
But the cyclones grew increasingly precise.
They moved with purpose, circling the Demon Lords and striking from different directions. The pressure became so overwhelming that Hanzo, Hosanna, and Archibald could do little more than hover in place.
Then something else fell from the sky.
Burning ice.
The first pieces were the size of bricks.
They crashed into the earth and exploded into steaming fragments.
Larger cubes followed.
Then boulders.
Massive blocks of frozen flame hurtled from above, smashing into the Fourth Floor with enough force to tear craters through the rolling hills.
Archibald’s barriers endured the first barrage.
Then the second.
By the third, they began to flicker.
The halos phased in and out of existence like dying lanterns.
“Steady, Archibald,” Hanzo ordered.
Archibald clenched his teeth.
He pushed forward, dodging between the falling masses while struggling to maintain all three defenses.
His energy continued to drain.
His concentration faltered.
Then the barrier above Hosanna vanished.
Archibald saw it.
Without hesitation, he redirected nearly all his remaining strength toward her.
A new barrier formed over Hosanna’s head just as another block of burning ice descended.
But in protecting her…
Archibald failed to protect himself.
A colossal cube struck him from the side.
The impact hurled him through the air.
His senses blurred as he raised both arms to shield his face from the scattering fragments.
“Archibald!”
Hanzo’s voice pierced the storm.
“Recover!”
The young Demon Lord forced his eyes open.
He steadied his breathing and reignited Jett.
But the Fourth Floor had already changed.
His three barriers disappeared at once.
Ahead, Hanzo and Hosanna turned to locate him.
Horror spread across their faces.
The countless black-and-gray cyclones had merged.
A single tornado now dominated the Fourth Floor.
It was broad and unnaturally dense, its rotation slow and almost cumbersome. Yet the power contained within it was absolute.
Archibald propelled himself toward his comrades.
When he saw their expressions, confusion crossed his youthful face.
“What is it?”
Hanzo’s composure shattered.
“ARCHIBALD!”
He pointed behind him.
“LOOK OUT!”
Archibald turned.
His blood ran cold.
The enormous tornado had ignited.
Black hellfire spread throughout the rotating winds, transforming the cyclone into a towering inferno.
Archibald attempted to accelerate.
Nothing happened.
His forward momentum had vanished.
Despite the flames pouring from his feet, he remained suspended in place.
The tornado had created a vacuum.
And it was pulling him in.
Slowly at first.
Then faster.
“No!”
Hosanna changed direction.
“Archibald!”
She prepared to fly after him.
Before she could move, Hanzo reached out and placed one hand gently but firmly upon her right shoulder.
“Don’t.”
Hosanna glared at him.
“We can still save him!”
Hanzo’s grip tightened.
His expression revealed the truth neither of them wished to acknowledge.
They could not.
Archibald saw Hanzo restraining her.
The fear left his face.
His body relaxed.
He understood.
There was no longer any reason to struggle.
Archibald extended one finger toward his comrades.
He closed his eyes and drew in a long, measured breath.
A small flame appeared at his fingertip.
It began to pulse.
Faster.
Brighter.
With each beat, more of Archibald’s remaining energy gathered within it.
At last, a brilliant red orb emerged from his finger.
It trembled violently as it floated through the turbulent air toward Hosanna.
“Take it.”
Archibald’s voice remained calm despite the inferno behind him.
“You will need this strength more than I will.”
Hosanna reached forward.
The orb settled into her palm.
Only then did Archibald stop resisting.
The flames beneath his feet disappeared.
His body drifted backward.
The black tornado claimed him.
Its burning winds wrapped around his arms and legs before dragging him into its infernal depths.
For one brief moment, his silhouette remained visible within the spiraling fire.
Then the storm tore him apart.
Flesh became cinders.
Bone became ash.
And Archibald, Demon Lord of House Galan, vanished into the heart of the Fourth Floor.
I preserved the progression through Dante’s Inverted Tower, Hanzo’s duel with Shula, Hosanna’s sacrifice, and the desperate descent into the Ninth Floor. The abilities, character dynamics, and final invocation remain faithful to your original chapter.
A crimson door materialized in the air before Orochi Hanzo and Hosanna Sun.
Burning letters spread across its surface:
THIS WAY TO THE FIFTH FLOOR
Neither Demon Lord hesitated.
They surged through the doorway, leaving the remnants of the Fourth Floor—and Archibald’s ashes—behind them.
Though the door had appeared in midair, the world beyond it contained a narrow spiral staircase descending into darkness. Hanzo led the way, his steps measured but urgent, while Hosanna followed close behind.
At the bottom of the stairwell stood another set of doors.
Hanzo pushed them open.
The Fifth Floor greeted them with absolute darkness.
There were no walls they could see.
No ceiling.
No path.
Only a single chamber swallowed by blackness.
Then words ignited before them.
ONE MINUTE TO REST.
HURRY.
SHE COMES SOON.
Hanzo immediately lowered himself into a recovery prayer.
Hosanna followed.
The pair closed their eyes, slowed their breathing, and drew their remaining flames inward. Their bodies were wounded, their reserves depleted, and the loss of Archibald still weighed upon them.
Yet the tower granted them no time to mourn.
A deep horn bellowed through the darkness.
The note vibrated through their bones.
Then came a violent quake.
Another.
And another.
Each impact was closer than the last.
Hosanna’s eyes opened.
“She’s coming, Hanzo.”
Her voice held no panic, only urgency.
“What do we do?”
Before Hanzo could answer, yellow flames spread across the floor beneath them.
A door formed horizontally within the fire.
At its center, a crimson number appeared.
SIX
Hanzo rose.
Without ceremony, he drove one foot into the burning door.
It shattered beneath him.
Both Demon Lords dropped through the opening and plunged into the next floor.
They landed inside another lobby.
This chamber was strangely ordinary.
Stale green wallpaper covered its walls, decorated with dark cherrywood trim. There were no beasts, no oceans of fire, no swarming armies.
Only a large clock mounted before them.
Its hands did not move.
Instead, a number appeared upon its face.
FIVE
A thunderous impact shook the room.
Shula’s warhammer.
FOUR
Another blow.
The wallpaper split.
The cherrywood groaned.
Hanzo and Hosanna exchanged a silent glance.
THREE
The next impact arrived off rhythm.
The disruption sent a sudden rush of power through both Demon Lords, sharpening their instincts.
TWO
The entire chamber trembled.
This time, the shock traveled through their bodies and settled deep within their stomachs.
ONE
Hanzo stepped in front of Hosanna.
“Stand back.”
His voice remained calm.
“It is my turn.”
He lowered his center of gravity and entered a prayer Hosanna had never witnessed him perform.
“Melee Style…”
Black fire gathered within his hands.
“…Zulu’s Secret Sword.”
ZERO
The gaudy chamber exploded into a million fragments.
Green walls and polished wood vanished, replaced by an infinite expanse of pale red.
Shula descended through the ruins.
Her colossal warhammer was already falling toward Hosanna’s skull.
There was no time to retreat.
No time to pray.
The weapon stopped only inches above her head.
A strange blade had intercepted it.
The clash released a tremendous wave of pressure through the endless void.
Shula looked toward the weapon’s wielder and smiled.
“So…”
Her crimson eyes narrowed with delight.
“The old man has finally decided to play.”
Orochi Hanzo stood between her and Hosanna.
In his hands rested a long, elegant sword composed entirely of black fire. Its blade was straight, yet the rounded, leaf-shaped point gave it the imposing appearance of both sword and spear.
Hanzo offered no reply.
He attacked.
His blade swept toward Shula’s throat.
She leaned backward with calm elegance, avoiding the strike, then answered with a crushing horizontal swing of her warhammer.
Hanzo slipped beneath it.
The weapon passed over his head with enough force to fracture the pale red void behind him.
Hosanna watched in awe.
She had fought beside Orochi Hanzo for decades.
She had witnessed his strength.
She had studied his wisdom.
But never had she seen the elder Demon Lord abandon all restraint.
The clash that followed was both war and performance.
House Galan and House Erembaur became flashes of infernal color within the pale red emptiness. Black, red, gold, and orange flames spiraled together in violent ribbons as Hanzo and Shula exchanged blow after blow.
Their battle carried the destructive force of colliding natural disasters.
Yet beneath that destruction existed elegance.
Every strike had purpose.
Every parry flowed into a counterattack.
Every evasive movement resembled a step within an ancient dance.
Shula’s warhammer tore through the air with earth-shaking power.
Hanzo’s sword moved with flawless precision.
They alternated between Melee Styles and the foundational fire abilities of Ignira and Igniraga. Torrents of condensed flame collided between them, erupting into waves of heated pressure.
Neither possessed Archibald’s M-Style skill of protection.
Their barriers were little more than thin glass before the violence of close-range combat.
At first, Shula’s raw strength dominated the exchange.
Each swing forced Hanzo backward.
Every impact threatened to break his guard.
But gradually…
The battle began to change.
Hanzo’s decades of experience revealed themselves.
He studied the rhythm of Shula’s shoulders.
The positioning of her feet.
The slight tension in her wrists before every swing.
Her power remained extraordinary—far beyond what should have belonged to a Demon Lord of only three years.
But power alone could not conceal intention.
Hanzo began reading her.
Then predicting her.
With every exchange, Shula’s attacks became clearer.
Her overwhelming strength remained dangerous, but the gap between strength and skill was narrowing.
At last, Hanzo saw an opening.
“Jett.”
Flames exploded beneath his feet.
He surged forward faster than Shula could reposition her weapon.
His knee drove into her abdomen.
The impact folded her body.
Blood and saliva burst from her mouth as the breath was torn from her lungs.
Her warhammer slipped from her grasp and crashed against the pale red surface below.
Before Shula could recover, Hanzo seized her long, tightly curled blonde hair.
He drew her head backward.
For a moment, the elder Demon Lord resembled an ancient predator preparing to finish wounded prey.
Victory appeared within his reach.
Then Shula’s limp hand twitched.
Behind Hanzo, the abandoned warhammer moved.
It rose from the ground without being touched.
The colossal weapon rocketed through the void, guided by its mistress’s will.
Hanzo sensed it too late.
The hammer struck him squarely in the back.
The impact tore him away from Shula and launched him violently across the battlefield.
Before he could regain control, Shula summoned her A-Style.
Her immense buisine trumpet formed within her hands.
Blood trickled from the corners of her mouth as she raised it to her lips.
“Abstract Style…”
She inhaled deeply.
“…Horn of Ragnarok!”
A single note erupted from the instrument.
The sound was deafening.
Majestic.
Apocalyptic.
Superheated waves surged through the infinite white void like the proclamation of some divine beast heralding the end of creation.
Red, orange, and golden fire spread across the emptiness.
Hanzo twisted through the soundwaves.
He moved with remarkable grace, weaving between them as though dancing through rain.
Before the final wave had fully passed, he closed the distance again.
His black-flamed sword carved elegant arcs through the air.
Shula met every strike.
She shifted seamlessly between her Melee Style and Special Style, moving from overwhelming physical attacks to complex harmonic techniques without hesitation.
One moment, she absorbed Hanzo’s force through brute strength.
The next, she redirected it with impossible precision.
For someone wielding a weapon of such size, her movements were unnaturally fluid.
For the first time since Hanzo had taken control of the battle…
They reached a stalemate.
Shula smiled.
Jett erupted from her boots.
She launched herself high above the endless pale red plane.
Her warhammer dissolved, replaced once more by the immense buisine trumpet.
She brought it to her lips and played a beautiful harmonic chord.
The sound spread across the battlefield like a heavenly fanfare.
Beside her, two enormous arrows of fire materialized.
Each blazed with predatory anticipation.
Shula released a powerful breath.
The arrows descended.
Hanzo stood his ground.
As the first projectile reached him, his sword flashed.
Once.
The arrow was redirected.
His blade moved again.
Twice.
The second arrow veered away as flawlessly as the first.
Hanzo lowered his sword.
“Shula.”
His voice carried genuine respect.
“You are truly impressive.”
Her smile widened.
She lifted the trumpet again.
This time, the chord she played was neither beautiful nor harmonious.
Two notes collided unnaturally.
C-flat.
B-natural.
Their dissonance created an unsettling vibration that offended the ear and disrupted the senses.
While sustaining the chord, Shula raised her free hand.
An enormous sphere of fire began forming above her palm.
It expanded rapidly.
Larger.
Brighter.
Hotter.
Soon it resembled a miniature hellish sphere suspended over the battlefield.
Hanzo narrowed his eyes.
Then Shula altered the chord.
C-flat vanished.
Only B-natural remained.
The enormous fireball disappeared.
Hanzo’s expression changed.
For the first time during their duel…
He looked confused.
Then understanding struck him.
Too late.
The fireball had never been the true attack.
The dissonant notes had manipulated the two arrows Hanzo redirected.
One projectile had been pressing against the other, holding it motionless beyond his awareness.
When Shula released the C-flat, the opposing force vanished.
The trapped arrow launched forward.
It raced toward Hanzo’s exposed back at impossible speed.
His instincts warned him.
Hanzo turned.
A sickening sound echoed through the void.
Flesh being pierced.
His eyes widened.
Hosanna Sun stood behind him.
Her arms were wrapped around his waist in an unintentional final embrace.
She had placed herself between Hanzo and the arrow.
The fiery projectile had torn completely through her chest.
The wound was enormous.
Through the hollow opening in her body, Hanzo could see the endless pale red void stretching beyond her.
The arrow hissed.
Then dissolved.
Hosanna had sacrificed herself for House Galan.
For her fallen comrade Archibald.
For Hanzo.
She had done so without farewell.
Without hesitation.
For one impossible moment…
Time stopped.
“No!”
Hanzo’s scream tore through the battlefield.
Hosanna’s once-flushed skin faded into a pale mixture of blue, white, and green.
The infernal crimson in her eyes disappeared.
Her natural pastel-blue gaze returned as the life drained from her body.
In that final instant, she resembled a delicate stoneware doll.
Beautiful.
Still.
Broken.
Hanzo’s mind went blank.
Grief seized the elder Demon Lord completely.
For one fatal moment, he forgot the battlefield.
He forgot Shula.
He forgot every experience had carved into him.
Hanzo turned sharply.
Shula was already swinging.
Her warhammer descended like divine judgment.
He possessed only fractions of a second to respond.
It was not enough.
The weapon struck him across the face.
A thunderous shockwave shattered the silence of the void.
Hanzo became a projectile of blood and flame, hurtling across the battlefield before crashing into the white surface below.
The impact had barely sounded when Shula appeared above him.
A sadistic smile stretched across her face.
Her crimson eyes burned with savage delight.
She raised her warhammer.
Then brought it down.
Once.
Hanzo’s head slammed against the surface.
Twice.
Bone cracked.
Three times.
Blood spread across the immaculate white floor.
Shula continued.
Again.
Again.
Again.
Hanzo’s face became a landscape of swelling, torn flesh, and blood.
His vision blurred.
Each breath escaped as a ragged gasp.
Still, he refused to yield.
A furious growl escaped Shula’s throat.
She raised the hammer once more.
The seventh blow landed.
Reality warped.
The foundation of Dante’s Inverted Tower buckled beneath the force of her assault.
The pale red void shattered.
Hanzo was driven through the floor itself.
He crashed into the Eighth Floor—a realm composed now entirely of solid orange.
Shula followed.
Her hammer descended again.
The eighth strike.
Then the ninth.
Even Roxanne Roseburn’s evolved Abstract Style began to collapse beneath Shula’s strength.
The orange world fractured.
Above them, something flickered into existence.
A hollow doorway.
The entrance to the Ninth Floor.
It was not yet supposed to exist.
But Shula’s relentless assault had beaten the tower so violently that the passage had been forced to manifest ahead of time.
Through his fading vision, Hanzo saw it.
His consciousness was slipping away.
His body no longer answered him.
Yet he understood that this was his final opportunity.
His last gamble.
Hanzo gathered every remaining fragment of strength within his broken body.
“Jett…”
Flames erupted beneath him.
The sudden burst caught Shula off guard.
The Eighth Floor exploded as both Demon Lords were launched upward.
They crossed the threshold just as the doorway became solid.
For one moment, it seemed intangible.
Then the passage accepted them.
Fire-like shards of glass erupted in every direction.
Hanzo and Shula crashed into the Ninth Floor.
Silence greeted them.
They had entered an immense throne room sculpted from living flame.
At its center sat Roxanne Roseburn.
Motionless.
Silent.
Her hands remained locked in a profound prayer as she sustained every floor of Dante’s Inverted Tower.
Hanzo lay broken upon the ground.
One eye had swollen nearly shut.
Blood covered his face.
His body could barely move.
Yet a faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.
Roxanne was here.
He had reached her.
He had succeeded.
Only one move remained.
Slowly…
Painfully…
Orochi Hanzo forced himself upright.
Shula watched him with narrowed eyes.
The elder Demon Lord raised his head.
His smile remained.
The pressure within the throne room deepened.
Even the air seemed unwilling to move.
Hanzo looked first toward Shula.
Then toward Roxanne Roseburn as she opened her eyes.
