Chapter 1:

Faith intertwined

The Dark Samurai

The forest moved in a heavy, unnatural silence. Then, the atmosphere changed.

THUD.

A girl burst through the dense brush, limbs flailing. Branches whipped against her skin, leaving thin, stinging trails of red, but she didn’t slow. Her pink hair was a chaotic blur behind her.

Her lungs burned as her ragged breathing echoed the terror pounding in her chest. She risked a glance over her shoulder. Nothing but shifting shadows. For a heartbeat, hope surged.

Then, the earth shook beneath her feet.

BOOM.

The impact sent waves of air through the earth, knocking her off balance. A monstrous, guttural roar tore through the canopy, calming the forest’s nocturnal hum. Her eyes widened, reflecting the pale moonlight.

It’s still here.

She pushed harder. Her kimono hung in tatters, smeared with mud and forest rot. Her sandals were falling apart beneath her feet, but the pain felt distant, Surpassed by the singular, desperate need to survive.

Behind her, the forest began to buckle. Trees snapped like twigs as something gargantuan tore through the undergrowth. Two malevolent, glowing eyes ignited in the darkness.

The Oni.

It moved with terrifying ease, its massive, clawed limbs rending the earth, its leathery wings brushing the treetops. The girl heard the rhythmic thrum of its approach—getting closer. Faster. Inevitable.

She spun around, desperate to gauge the distance, but the forest was empty. The creature had vanished.

Her heart stuttered, skipping a beat. "Where did it-?"

A shadow eclipsed the moon.

She tilted her head back, her breath hitching in her throat. The Oni was descending from the heavens, its wingspan blotting out the sky, its jaws unhinging to reveal rows of obsidian teeth.

She froze, paralyzed by the sheer impossibility of escape.

No, she thought, the word echoing in her mind. I don’t want to die.

SHING!

A streak of silver, cold and absolute, sliced through the dark.

The Oni halted mid-air. For a heartbeat, the world hung suspended in a vacuum of silence.

Then- SPLASH.

A deluge of black ichor painted the forest floor. The beast’s colossal frame shuddered, severed, and collapsed with a thunderous, shaking crash.

BOOM.

The girl crumbled to her knees, the adrenaline draining from her body for a moment.

She looked up, dazed.
Standing between her and the steaming remains of the monster was a man.

His back was turned, his silhouette jagged and worn. His robes were shredded, stained by an uneven mix of dark, viscous monster blood and the bright, crimson splatter of his own. His sword, a blade that seemed to drink the moonlight, hung heavy in his grip.

The girl remained on the ground, breathing heavily as she crawled backward, putting some distance between herself and the unknown stranger.

The samurai lowered his arm. A single droplet of blood slid down the steel

DRIP.

"Stay back..." her voice was a fragile whisper.

He didn’t move.

Suddenly he began to stagger toward her, struggling to remain upright.

Then, as if a string had been cut, his body swayed.

"Wait!”

THUD.

He hit the dirt, his sword slipping from his numb fingers to clatter against the rocks. The girl scrambled toward him, her fear replaced by a frantic urgency.

Moonlight illuminated him as she slowly approached his side.
The girl's hands hovered uncertainly over his torso. It was a ruin of deep gashes and bruises.

He is barely older than me
, she thought

He had a scar across his left eye, his black hair jagged, left unkempt. As his body laid on the earth, like a man who had walked through hell.

The girl looked from his still, pale face to the decimated carcass of the Oni. One strike. He had killed a demon with a single movement.

She looked back at the boy, her pulse quickening. Who are you?

Her gaze drifted to the sword—strange, pulsating with a faint, rhythmic heat that defied explanation. She reached out, then hesitated. Whatever name he carried, whatever duty had brought him to this dark path, he had been her salvation.

She took a steadying breath and laid a trembling hand on his shoulder.

"D-don't die." Her voice shook. "Don't die."

He had saved her life. Now she had to save his.
