Chapter 2:

Terror Balance and Family Dinners

My ex-girlfriend became like a sister to me and now my classmate is trying to blackmail me

Chapter 2: Terror Balance and Family Dinners

The shrill ringing of the school bell didn't sound like a call to class; it echoed like the evacuation siren for a nuclear power plant on the verge of a full meltdown.

Haruto was paralyzed in a brutal crossfire. On one side stood Asuka Natsume, whose ruthless blackmailer facade had completely crumbled, turning her into a cowering mess staring at the dirt as if wishing the earth would open up and swallow her whole. On the other side stood Airi Shimizu, maintaining a smile that was as graceful as it was terrifying, while the pitch-black aura radiating around her seemed to freeze the grass beneath her shoes.

"T-The bell!" Haruto finally managed to stammer out, her voice cracking miserably. She took two steps backward, clutching her smartphone to her chest like a riot shield. "I... I'm going to class! This isn't over, Shinohara!"

Without waiting for a response, Asuka spun on her heel and bolted down the gravel path, her twin red pigtails thrashing in a frantic, clumsy rhythm. She nearly tripped over her own skirt before vanishing around the corner of the art building.

Haruto swallowed hard. The blackmailer had deserted the field. The coward was left behind, utterly alone with his executioner.

He slowly turned his head, locking eyes with Airi. The girl took a step forward, closing the distance until Haruto caught that soft scent of jasmine shampoo again—the very same fragrance that brought him peace a year ago, but now smelled like sweet, lethal poison.

"Asuka Natsume, wasn't it?" Airi murmured, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear with unnerving delicacy. "She certainly seems... expressive. But you know, Haruto... guys who let themselves get dragged around by loud girls tend to meet very tragic ends."

"A-Airi, it's not what you think at all..." Haruto held up his hands, cold sweat trickling down the back of his neck. "She was just asking me about the material for..."

"Don't bother cooking up a story right now," Airi interrupted in a sweet voice, tilting her head. The smile never left her lips, though her eyes remained completely void of life. "The bell already rang. We wouldn't want to be late on our first day as model siblings, now would we? Let's go."

She turned around and glided toward the main building with elegant strides. Haruto stood frozen for three whole seconds, trying to remember the mechanics of breathing, before dragging his feet to follow her at a strategically safe distance of at least six feet.

The rest of the day's classes were a prolonged exercise in psychological torture.

Back in the classroom, the triangle of death was perfectly configured. Asuka sat directly in front of Haruto; she didn't dare glance back even once for the next three hours, keeping her spine rigid and her head buried, thoroughly traumatized by the showdown in the yard.

Airi, on the other hand, sitting at the desk to Haruto's right, didn't bother hiding a thing. Every ten or fifteen minutes, she would casually rest her chin in her palm and stare a hole straight into the side of Haruto's face. Whenever the teacher glanced over, she seamlessly feigned the look of a devoted, studious pupil, but the second the teacher turned back to the blackboard, Airi's deep violet eyes went right back to boring holes into Haruto's profile.

'I'm not going to last a week,' he thought, staring blankly at the board without processing a single word about quadratic equations. 'Asuka has the photos that will obliterate my social standing. Airi has the absolute determination to amputate my lower half. If I give in to Asuka, Airi slaughters me. If I give in to Airi, Asuka leaks the photos and I become the laughingstock of the entire school. I need to neutralize Asuka's phone before this bomb detonates.'

When the final chime sounded to signal the end of the school day, Haruto felt a fleeting surge of relief—which lasted for precisely two seconds.

Asuka packed her belongings in record time and shot out of the classroom without making a sound. Airi, with infuriating composure, packed her notebooks, stood up, and glided over to the side of Haruto's desk.

"Shall we walk home together, Haruto-kun?" she asked, pitching her voice just loud enough for the remaining classmates in the room to hear. "Mom and your dad said they're making a special celebratory dinner tonight."

Several classmates turned to look, whispering among themselves. "Man, they get along surprisingly well for brand-new stepsiblings." "He's so lucky to get such a gorgeous sister."

Haruto flashed a strained, plastic smile, feeling the weight of everyone's inquisitive gazes burning into him.

"S-Sure... let me just pack up, Airi."

The walk home was a high-wire act over an active volcano. On the public streets, right in front of the neighbors, Airi played the part of the exemplary, affectionate younger sister. But the moment they turned down a deserted alleyway, the ambient temperature around them dropped ten degrees.

The instant they stepped through the front gate of the Shinohara-Shimizu residence and slipped off their shoes in the entryway, the mouthwatering aroma of savory meat stew and home-cooked spices greeted them.

"Ah, you two are back!" Haruto's mother called out, emerging from the kitchen in a floral apron with a radiant smile. "How was your first day? Did you manage to settle in okay?"

"It was wonderful, Mom!" Airi chimed in instantly, her demeanor transforming into that of a pure, blameless angel. She clasped her hands in front of her uniform and let out a light, melodic giggle. "Haruto was so sweet to me. He showed me around the school and made sure I didn't feel lonely."

Airi's father—now Haruto's stepfather—stepped out right behind her, carrying a bowl of salad.

"That's fantastic news! We were a bit worried there might be some awkwardness between you two since everything happened so fast. I'm thrilled to see you getting along like real siblings!"

Haruto felt a heavy lump catch in his throat. He glanced at Airi, who returned his look with a calculated sweetness that made his stomach do violent somersaults.

"Yeah... it was great," Haruto forced out, straining to project the most natural tone he could manufacture. "Extremely... productive."

"Wonderful! Go wash up, dinner's already on the table," his mother urged, humming as she headed back into the kitchen.

Minutes later, the four of them were gathered around the dining table. Airi's father and Haruto's mother chatted lively about wedding arrangements and work, completely oblivious to the cold war waging right under their noses.

Airi sat directly across from Haruto.

While conversing cheerfully with the adults, she casually extended her leg beneath the table. The heel of her slipper pressed gently against Haruto's shin, applying a slow, steady, agonizing pressure.

Haruto locked up, his fork freezing mid-air. He looked up at Airi. She was smiling sweetly at her father.

"Yes, Dad, the school is lovely. And the classroom is so quiet... though there are a few irritating distractions sitting right by the window."

The pressure on his shin intensified. Haruto swallowed a groan of pain, forcing down a dry mouthful of food.

"Are you alright, Haruto? You look a bit pale," his stepfather noted, catching the glint of sweat on the boy's forehead.

"I-I'm totally fine! The food is just so delicious, I swallowed a bit too fast," Haruto lied on the spot, subtly jerking his leg back to escape Airi's slipper. But Airi matched his movement effortlessly, maintaining full territorial dominance under the table.

"Oh, good. By the way, Haruto..." Airi chimed in, locking her violet eyes directly onto him while her shoe dug right back into his leg. "I noticed that girl with the red pigtails, Natsume-san, seemed awfully interested in you today. Are you two close friends?"

The dining table fell dead silent for a second. Haruto's mother turned to her son with an intrigued smile.

"Oh, a girl? Does Haruto have a new friend already?"

Haruto felt the oxygen drain out of his lungs entirely. If he said they were friends, Airi would take it as confirmation of the blackmail and fake relationship. If he claimed he didn't know her, Airi would know he was lying through his teeth.

"N-Nothing like that," Haruto replied, struggling to keep his voice steady despite the throb in his shin. "Natsume-san is just the class rep sitting in front of me. She was just... filling me in on club policies and class schedules. Nothing major."

Airi held his gaze for five agonizingly long seconds. Slowly, the pressure against his leg eased up, and she withdrew her foot, picking up a bite of rice with her chopsticks.

"I see... just school duties then," Airi murmured, popping the food into her mouth with a delicate little smile that sent a chill straight down Haruto's spine. "It's comforting to know you're so dedicated to your studies, Haruto-kun. It would be such a shame if something got in the way of your focus."

The rest of dinner proceeded under that unbearable, suffocating tension. Haruto cleaned his plate as fast as humanly possible, concocted a thin excuse about a mountain of homework, and bolted up the stairs to his bedroom on the second floor.

Locking the door behind him, he leaned his back against the wood and slid all the way down to the floor, letting out a heavy sigh that carried the weight of the entire universe.

"I'm not going to survive this year..." he muttered, staring blankly at the ceiling.

Suddenly, his phone screen lit up on the desk.

BZZZ…

Haruto practically jumped out of his skin, his heart slamming against his ribcage. He scrambled over to the desk and snatched up the device. Two unread notifications.

The first was from Asuka Natsume:

[Asuka]: "Hey, IDIOT! Tomorrow before first period, meet me in the back courtyard. We need to lay down the ground rules for our fake relationship! And don't you dare be late, or bring THAT PSYCHO sister of yours along! I still have the photos on my phone!"

The second notification, delivered a mere second later, came from Airi Shimizu—who was currently in the room right next door, separated from him by nothing more than a thin wooden wall:

[Airi]: "Good night, dear brother. I heard you lock your door. Don't worry, I won't come in... for now. Just wanted to remind you that I'll be monitoring your every step at school tomorrow. If I catch you talking to that redhead again, our conversation won't be nearly as polite as it was at dinner. Sleep well! ♥"

Haruto stared at the screen, then at the wall dividing his room from Airi's, and finally up at the ceiling.

He shoved his phone aside, flopped onto the bed fully clothed in his uniform, and buried his face beneath his pillow.

Then, he sank into thought.

"I don't know how I'm going to resolve this situation, but tomorrow I'll try to negotiate with Natsume-san."

"I just hope Airi doesn't find out; otherwise, I'm done for."
