Chapter 33:
After the Rain
The section I am on is starting to break loose.
Sliding.
The ground shakes violently.
It sways.
It is detaching slowly.
Bursts of impact interrupt my weeping and increase my despair.
I can not even cry now.
I do not have the strength for that.
I do not have the breath for that.
The grinding of the rocks makes an unpleasant sound.
It is almost completely detached.
I am about to fall.
Someone pulls me up.
“Yeah, kid, that was quite a scene of destruction, huh? You really wrecked the place.”
Kasamba?
“Let us get out of here. I will carry you, kid. We are still in danger.”
He slings my body over his shoulders as if I were a sack of fruits.
I do not have the strength to put up a fight.
My vision is fading to black.
I recognize his voice.
I know I am safe now.
That was a close call.
I hope it was enough of a distraction for the other group to pull it off.
“That crazy idea of yours to climb the whole wall... I have never seen anything like it, kid. It was absolute madness. Thank the elder goddesses I managed to get up here in time, too. I was planning to come down from up here and save you. But you saved me the trouble and climbed the wall on your own. You are crazy!"
I no longer have the strength for anything.
I am in a dark room.
Lying on a bed.
Dry.
My legs ache badly.
I am still very tired.
I am still alive.
I have never used so much magic all at once.
I did not think I would manage to do it.
I am alive.
I do not know if I should be relieved.
I scan the room to see if there is anyone here besides me, but I can not see anyone, nor can I sense another presence.
I suppose Kasamba brought me here and moved on to something else.
What is happening outside?
It is pitch black.
There are no windows.
I think I am in a basement.
I sit up on the bed.
My legs are incredibly sore.
They barely withstood the explosive burst of magical power I needed to run to the top of the wall.
I do not think I will be able to walk properly for a while.
I should rest.
I have to walk again soon to leave this city.
To fight Olvad.
That whole thing was insane.
Thankfully it worked out.
I managed to survive.
I was already bracing myself for the worst.
I suppose Balance has other plans for me.
Thanks to Kasamba, I am alive.
What is happening out there?
I imagine it is absolute chaos.
Even more chaos.
If things were not bad after the attack, just imagine what it is like now, with a section of the city wall completely destroyed.
Olvad must be loving this.
Everyone must be very scared.
Everything must be under his control now.
I hope the other group has completed its mission.
I hope everyone is okay.
I hope to see Canny again.
Why do I like him so much?
Why do I care about him?
He reminds me of my friend Roger.
They share the same spirited, positive presence.
The exact opposite of me.
Maybe that is why I like being around people like that.
To keep things balanced.
Come to think of it, Kasamba is that kind of person, too.
I think I attract that kind of person.
I must be transferring the feelings I had for Roger onto Canny.
If Roger were still alive, I think we would be dating.
What?
Why am I thinking about this now?
I suppose surviving that clash today made me want a future.
I want to stay alive.
