Chapter 3:

An anomaly of acid

Sovereign seals of aethelgard

Twelve years before Lulu would stand before the First Family and refuse to kneel, he entered the world without giving anyone time to prepare for him.
The delivery chamber of House Blueyard was unusually quiet.
The midwives stood around the bed, waiting for the newborn's first cry.
Then it came.
One sharp scream.
And nothing more.
The silence that followed was somehow worse.
One of the midwives slowly looked down.
The infant had opened his eyes.
They were an unusual light green, cold and focused enough to make the woman holding him instinctively tighten her grip.
He wasn't crying.
He wasn't kicking.
He was simply looking around.
As if he were studying the room.
Then—
Hissssss.
The sound came from the silver basin beside the bed.
The midwife turned.
A dark spot had appeared on its surface.
Then another.
Then dozens.
The silver began to bubble.
"What...?"
She dropped the basin.
It struck the floor with a metallic crash.
The sound should have echoed.
Instead, everyone became distracted by another noise.
Drip.
Drip.
Drip.
The medical shears hanging beside the table were beginning to corrode.
The iron chains fixed to the wall were turning black.
The room filled with a sharp, sour smell.
Someone coughed.
Another attendant covered her mouth.
"What is happening?"
Nobody answered.
The infant simply stared.
Raw mana was leaking from his tiny body.
Not ordinary mana.
Acidic mana.
The invisible energy spread through the chamber like poison, eating away at anything it touched.
The head midwife took one cautious step backward.
"He hasn't even taken his second breath..."
She looked toward the child's parents.
"He is already releasing this much?"
Lulu's father stared at his son.
His dark red hair fell across his shoulders, but even he seemed unable to find words.
Beside him, Lulu's mother watched the infant with a mixture of awe and fear.
The child's snow-white hair reflected the candlelight.
White.
Almost impossibly white.
It reminded them of his mother's rare bloodline, while the volatile mana surrounding him belonged unmistakably to Blueyard.
A strange combination.
A dangerous one.
The Blueyard bloodline had never been ordinary.
Their ancestors were feared for their volatile magical nature, and their appearance often changed dramatically from generation to generation.
One legendary ancestor, Megya, had been born with deep blood-red hair.
Lulu had inherited none of it.
Instead, he had arrived with white hair and a presence that made metal decay.
The father slowly approached.
The infant turned his head.
Their eyes met.
For the briefest moment, the room seemed to freeze.
Then the baby grabbed the man's finger.
The metal ring on his hand began to smoke.
He immediately pulled it away.
Everyone stared.
The father looked at his ring.
Then at his son.
A slow smile appeared.
"What have we created?"
The mother gave him a look.
"Don't sound so pleased."
"Why shouldn't I be?"
"Because our son is destroying the room."
He looked around.
The silver basins were ruined.
The chains were corroded.
The shears were useless.
The floor beneath the child had begun to discolor.
His smile grew.
"Then perhaps the room wasn't strong enough."
The mother stared at him.
"You're impossible."
The infant suddenly looked toward the door.
The adults followed his gaze.
Nothing was there.
Yet the feeling remained.
The newborn seemed aware of everything around him.
The people.
The walls.
The energy.
The world.
Nobody knew what he would become.
But one thing was
already certain.
Lulu was not an ordinary child.
He was an anomaly.
And House Blueyard had just given birth to a problem the other six Great Families would eventually have to acknowledge.
