Chapter 2:

The Weighing of Worth

The Erased Passenger of Arlan

A stark blue luminescence flickered into existence against the gloom, splitting my vision.

[Main Scenario #1 – The Weighing of Worth]

[Category: Main]

[Difficulty: F]

[Clear Conditions: Prove your 'worth' to the system.]

[Time Limit: 300 seconds]

[Penalty: Character Deletion]

Penalty.
Not a game over screen. Not a respawn delay. An administrative execution order.
The cold hit me before the dread did. The air smelled of burnt grease and pulverized wet slate, thin and sour against the lining of my throat. Around me, the calcified plateau sprawled under an alien sky, a vast sheet of violet twilight split by crooked, pale lightning that made no sound.

Nearly a thousand human beings were scattered across the gray stone. Some were crouched in the dirt, clutching their knees and weeping hysterically; others clawed wildly at the empty air before their eyes, trying to swat away the translucent azure windows burned across their retinas.

I took three rapid steps backward until my shoulder blades slammed against a jagged slab of stone. Cold seeped straight through the denim of my jacket. I tucked my chin, keeping my back pinned to the rock, and forced my lungs to draw oxygen.

Don’t look at the horizon. Don’t look at the sky.

I raised a trembling hand and tapped the blinking rune at the bottom of the prompt.

[Expanding Scenario Details.]
[Channel Administrator 'D-804' is reviewing the candidate pool.]

A faint acoustic snap..the sound of brittle glass cracking under dry frost..rippled through my ears.

[Candidate 0842: The path to Arlan is paved with discarded data.]
[Countless souls vanished within the transit buffer. Some bartered their marrow; some ascended; most were purged.]
[To walk upon Arlan, your 'worth' must be recorded.]

[Task 1: Slay a minimum of 3 Candidates within 300 seconds.]
[Task 2: Shield a minimum of 3 Candidates from fatal trauma within 300 seconds.]
[Task 3: Announce your true designation and surrender your vessel.]
[Task 4: Recover the 3 Prime Key-Stones buried within Stratum Zero.]

My breath hitched in my windpipe.
Three yards to my left, an older man in a torn grey cardigan collapsed hard onto the shale, the palms of his hands scraping bloody tracks across the flint. His eyes were wide, dilated with raw, unhinged hysteria.

"Three people..." His voice tore at the vowels, shrill and ragged. "It says we have to kill three people in five minutes or we get deleted!"
The words dropped into the crowd like a lit flare into gasoline.

The crying stopped. The collective grief evaporated in a single, sickening second, replaced by something ancient and predatory.
"What?!" "Get away from me!" "Don't come near me!! I swear to God, stay back!!!"

A young man with split knuckles scrambled forward on all fours, his fingers closing around a jagged wedge of rusty angle iron half-buried in the scree. His bloodshot gaze swept wildly over the huddled silhouettes, desperate, searching for someone frail. Someone small.

The timer in our visual feeds began counting down.

[04:48]

[04:47]

The plateau was turning into an abattoir, driven not by monsters, but by the frantic self-preservation of ordinary people who had been drinking coffee and checking train schedules an hour earlier.

My stomach churned violently. Bile rose in my throat. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to sprint until my boots broke against the screen, but the logic of the window kept my feet rooted to the stone.
Five minutes. Four tasks.
I forced my eyes away from the man gripping the iron bar. I clamped down on the rising panic, locking it behind the cold, ruthless detachment I had built through thousands of hours dissecting broken patch notes and exploitative alpha-tier games.
Task 1: Slay. Task 2: Shield.  Task 3: Surrender vessel. Task 4: Scavenge the stratum.

My eyes narrowed. The text didn't shift.

They weren't labeled Branches. They weren't labeled Options or Paths.

The architecture of the prompt was unmistakable: they were cataloged sequentially as Tasks.

How can a single entity execute three people, protect three people, commit suicide, and complete a map-wide scavenger hunt inside three hundred seconds?

You couldn't. It was an operational contradiction. A lethal paradox engineered to ignite an immediate slaughter before anyone stopped to read the interface.

Beneath the four contradictory tasks, a thin line of gold light pulsed beneath the blue frame:

[Candidate Prerogative: Inquiry Protocol.]
[Each Candidate may submit exactly 1 query to the Channel Overseer.]
[Remaining Inquiries: 1]

Across the plateau, harsh red system pings began detonating in the air above people's heads, accompanied by the dull thud of administrative rejection:

[Candidate 0089 Query: "Is this a government experiment?!" -> Penalty: Inquiry Expended. Irrelevant data.]
[Candidate 0612 Query: "How do I log out?!" -> Penalty: Inquiry Expended. Functionality nonexistent.]
[Candidate 0341 Query: "Can you hear me?!" -> Penalty: Inquiry Expended. Ineffective query.]

They were burning their single lifeline on denial. Screaming desperate questions at a bureaucratic machine that only parsed operational parameters. Once that single token was spent, there was nothing left between their throats and the butcher's iron.
A heavy boot crunched against the shale six feet in front of me.
A tall man with bloodshot eyes and a split lip stepped into my path. In his right hand, he held a jagged shard of slate, its edge freshly dark with someone else's blood. His chest heaved beneath a torn windbreaker. He was looking directly at my throat.

"Hey," he whispered, his voice trembling. "Don't... don't take it personal, kid. The clock's running out."

[03:12]

I didn't reach for a rock. I didn't push off from the stone wall.
I fixed my stare entirely on the flashing golden input cursor hovering before my eyes, ignoring the man's shadow falling across my boots. I parted my dry lips and spoke…low, steady, and stripped of panic:

"Why are contradictory directives cataloged as cumulative tasks rather than branching options?"

The input bar froze.
The golden line did not disappear. It expanded, blooming outward until it erased the blue interface entirely.

[Inquiry Transmitted.]
[........................................]

Across the plateau, the screams seemed to drop into a vacuum. The wind died mid-gust. The air grew immensely heavy, smelling no longer of sulfur and stone, but of scorched ozone and ancient server banks.

The man with the slate stopped two paces away, his weapon frozen in midair, his pupils shrinking in terror as an intense, golden ring of systemic light erupted from my sternum.

[System Notice: Structural Anomaly Detected.]
[Candidate 0842 has bypassed the emotional filter.]
[Verification: You have exposed the deliberate architectural fault of Main Scenario #1.]

A secondary window popped open, dyed in a cold, mocking violet.
[Channel Administrator 'Overseer' is grinning at Candidate 0842.][The Overseer has recorded your inquiry:]

"The herd scrambles to butcher; the cattle scramble to die. Only an executioner inspects the design of the gallows."

[Standard Protocol for Main Scenario #1: Suspended.]
[Penalty for Divergence: Nullified.]
[Calculating bespoke scenario parameters for Candidate 0842...]

Underneath my boots, the calcified stone groaned and cracked open. The five-minute slaughter timer didn't expire.
It shattered like cheap glass.
