Chapter 8:
Wrath from the Underworld
Part 1.7
For the next few weeks, my arm hurt like a bitch.
As I said before, the Chitin Armour seals wounds.
That raises my survivability, but it does nothing for pain.
I kept my arm in a sling and pretended that it hurt more than it did.
There were two reasons why.
I wanted to have some time off from Marky, and I wanted to study the reaction from Kennedy.
Her behaviour after the spike incident bothered me.
I know I saved her, but an über shouldn’t think twice about a scrub like me.
If she had a little bit of care in her heart, I could use that.
At that moment, it seemed like I was wrong.
Because after that night, she acted like business as usual.
I just shrugged my shoulders and did my job.
At least I got a week off to look after my injuries.
When I got back, the only person who seemed like they missed me was Sandra.
That bothered me.
She wasn't just a killer, like I am.
She could be…
I’m sorry, as you can see, I was a bit compromised.
My only saving grace is that Sandra and Kennedy weren’t on my list.
For the first time in my life, I prayed to God that it would stay that way.
The first conversation between Sandra and me went something like this.
“How are you, Adams?”
I shrugged and answered with a smile.
“Like a guy shoved something long and hard in me, and didn’t buy me a drink first.”
Her eyes went wide, and her mouth opened and closed a few times.
I then looked at my watch.
“My shift starts in two minutes. That is when I put the jokes away.”
She started laughing and punched me in the shoulder.
“You are a strange one.”
I nodded and started working.
Marky, as usual, didn’t care about my arm in a sling.
Sandra, on the other hand, would walk closer to me as she looked after Kennedy.
Damn, it is weird how life can show you what might have been.
This made my heart almost grow three sizes, but I promise it didn’t get in the way.
When I say I am a professional, I mean it.
The first day I walked without the sling, Kennedy walked up to me.
“Milton, come with me.”
I nodded and followed.
Normally, I would report to Marky, but my contract changed to a dual protection one.
That means that I have to fill in for Sandra if Kennedy says so.
As we drove, she pressed a small button on the door and waited.
I saw a small green light, and she let out a sigh.
“I never thanked you for saving my life.”
Before she could speak again, Milton cut her off.
“You don’t have to, Miss Kennedy. I was just doing my job.”
She was quiet for a moment as she stared into my eyes.
“Your contract was for Marcus. I wasn’t your responsibility. Why did you save me instead of looking after him?”
I knew I had to be careful; she was showing me that there was more than one brain cell behind her eyes.
“If you want me to be honest. I don’t know. I saw a guy pull out a gun, and I moved.”
She stared at me again, but she nodded after a few seconds.
“We are on our way to meet my father. He wants to see you.”
After she mentioned her father, she started tapping her foot.
Charlemagne Kennedy isn’t the type of guy just anyone can talk to.
He also has a very low tolerance for bullshit.
I remember a strange hit I had to do for this guy.
One of his secretaries didn’t want to suck his dick.
Luckily, her ticket came to me.
She is having a blast in Nuvada City on the other end of the country.
It is one of the very few cities with an actual beach.
As I thought of relocating to a beach, the car stopped.
I filled my role and opened the door for her.
Kennedy led the way, and like a good bodyguard, I kept my head on a swivel.
We entered a massive skyscraper, and I didn’t know or care what ‘legitimate business’ this asshole ran.
All I knew was that he had his grubby hands in drugs, sex and murder for hire.
He was a true piece of shit.
When we reached the elevator, Kennedy took some deep breaths.
Why would a kid have to steady themselves to meet their own father?
All I could do was look ahead and pretend that I didn’t see that.
The elevator stopped at the very top of the building.
We both walked out, and I saw two very decked-out bodyguards.
As Kennedy entered, she told me to wait outside.
I took my place next to one of the hulking bodyguards.
After a quick scan, I was impressed.
They were both armoured with what is known as Stone Skin.
They are basically bulletproof at the expense of mobility.
They also had automatic rifles in both arms.
They were meant to be sentinels that endure a war and slowly advance into the carnage.
After roughly fifteen minutes, the secretary's phone rang.
She looked at me and told me that I may enter.
With a quick nod, I opened the door.
Kennedy was sitting on the edge of the massive desk in the middle of his office.
As I entered, he didn’t look up from his paperwork.
I was happy about that; I didn’t want to be worth his time.
“So you are the kid’s guy?”
After a quick nod, I stuttered for effect.
“Ye-yes, sir.”
After he signed some paperwork, he continued.
“You saved my daughter when you didn’t have to. There is a hundred thousand in your account.”
“Th-thank you, sir.”
He took his daughter’s hand and kissed it.
His attention turned to me.
“You can go.”
Just as the door closed behind me, I heard him say one last thing.
“What a putz.”
I waited next to the bodyguards until Kennedy walked out.
As she went past me, I took my place behind her.
When we entered the elevator, she looked up at me.
“Are you satisfied?”
I wasn’t, and I didn’t want that asshole’s money.
“I don’t know, Miss. I didn’t do it for money.”
She stared at me again, but she seemed satisfied with my answer.
As we entered the car, she just said one word.
“Home.”
She stared at me in silence the entire way.
