Chapter 52:

Good Luck Charlotte

The Substitute Heroine Shouldn't Exist

Charlotte looked out of the window. A little cat wandered around out there. Nervously, she petted it. The cat meowed and welcomed the affection.

Knock knock.

“Come in.”

Zoe and Sybil came in.

The cat’s fur stood on end. It hissed and ran off.

Charlotte pouted.

“Did it run away again?” Zoe said jokingly.

“Yes, I don't understand why animals don't like me.”

“You’ll find one that loves you eventually.”

Sybil laughed softly. Her condition had improved greatly since they found her.

“Anyway, it’s time.”

“Already?”

“Yes, we have to go back to the academy.”

“Noooo!”

They came down from their room with their luggage. The others were already waiting for them there. Suri took care of the final details with the innkeeper.

The others were talking about everything that had happened. Charlotte felt a warm glow in her heart.

“It feels weird, doesn't it?” Zoe whispered to her.

“Yes, it was really an adventure.”

“Sure it was, and it was supposed to be just a side mission.”

“That's true… we just defeated the hero, so I don't think we need to learn anything else.”

“You just don't want to go back.”

“Maybe, but I’m gonna miss this town.”

“To be honest, I feel the same way, but maybe we can come back someday.”

“That would be great.”

Suri interrupted their conversation. They all left the inn. They walked through the city. Many houses were still in ruins, but most of the streets had already been cleared.

The sun was just rising, but as always, the city was already bustling.

People were opening their stores. In the end, life had to go on.

A boy ran past them. He ran and shouted to everyone, “They’re coming, they’re coming!”

In an instant, the streets filled with people. Everyone clapped as they passed by. Some whistled, others chanted the word “heroes”, but in the end everyone recognized them. Charlotte's eyes lit up, and a huge smile formed on her face.

They walked down the main street like that. Charlotte's heart filled with joy. It was the first time something like that had ever happened to her. She didn't even know what to say.

They finally arrived at the city gates, where a carriage was already waiting for them. There were people who had come to say goodbye to them in person: the nuns and the children from the orphanage. Even the count was there.

“Why do you have to go?” A little kid asked.

“I guess I have to become a heroine.”

“But to us, you already really are.”

Charlotte didn’t know what to say.

Suddenly, an elderly man approached her. He handed her a wooden figurine carved in her likeness. Charlotte jumped for joy. She couldn't help but admire it.

“You rescued my family… Thank you!”

The whole town thanked them for everything. Charlotte couldn't hold back her tears. She didn't want to leave, so they had to force her into the carriage.

The town watched as the carriage horses moved forward and the group drove away.

“Do you recognize that girl?” One nun asked another.

“Not really. She must be a runaway orphan.”

“Do we have the record of the runaways?”

“I think it was destroyed along with the other one.”

“What a shame.”

“Calm down, she'll be fine with them.”

“But I really don't remember her... I never forget any of the children.”

“Maybe she comes from another place.”

The trip back was just as long as the trip there. This time, everyone fell asleep. It took them just as long, and they arrived just before nightfall.

Suri gathered them together one last time.

“I’m really proud of you… You proved to be an incredible team and capable people... I... I'm truly proud of you all.”

“Wow, it's not like Miss Suri to sound so sentimental.”

“Charlotte, be quiet… but you really did a great job.” Her words sounded genuine. “Remember, they're holding a ceremony for you tomorrow.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really, so don’t be late.”

Suri said goodbye to her students, and they all went to their dorm rooms. In the end, only Charlotte and Alysia remained; they were in the same building.

Their conversations were no longer awkward.

“I have something to tell you.” Alysia started.

“What happened?”

“Bastion, are you there?”

“I’m right here, Alysia.”

“It’s good to hear you again.”

“It’s good to be heard.”

It took Charlotte a few seconds to understand.

“How is that possible?”

Charlotte was left speechless.

“I don’t know… When we fought the hero... I think we connected too much... As weapon and wielder.”

“That’s amazing!”

“I know, right! I can finally talk to her!” Bastion said excitedly.

They arrived at Alysia's room.

“Wait here.”

She leaned Bastion against the wall.

“Thank you, Charlotte.”

“Why? I didn’t do anything.”

“You let me be by her side... Even though you were left alone... You let me be with her…”

Charlotte remained silent.

“I’m glad I did it, but... I couldn't keep my promise.”

“Relax… I can talk to her... I can be by her side, and that's enough.”

Charlotte slapped her own cheeks.

“What was that?”

“We have a whole world to discover... There are so many possibilities!”

“I guess so.”

“It's too early to give up!”

“All right... I'll trust you, Charlotte.”

She smiled.

Alysia came out of her room and gave her a box of chocolates.

“What’s this?”

“Thank you…”

“Why?”

“For not giving up on me.”

Alysia blushed.

“Anyway, see you tomorrow.”

She quickly closed the door.

“Good night, Charlotte.”

Charlotte managed to hear.

“Good night, Bastion.”

Charlotte returned to her room. It felt a little strange and lonely to her.

The moonlight shone through the window. She spent a long time staring at the ceiling until she finally fell asleep.

Charlotte stumbled a few times, but managed to keep running. The hallways felt longer than usual. Finally, despite being exhausted, she made it to the meeting point.

“What did I tell you!” Suri scolded her.

“Not to be late…”

“And what did you just do?”

“Be late.”

“Hurry up!”

She looked a little embarrassed and sat down next to Zoe. The auditorium was huge, and there were a lot of people there. The principal was almost finished with his speech.

“Now we’ll ask these students to come forward to receive their recognition when their names are called.”

The principal called out the names of her friends one by one, until it was finally her turn.

“Charlotte Armelier.”

There was applause, and the audience genuinely cheered her on.

Tears threatened to spill, but she held them back.

“You really have accomplished a remarkable feat. Your actions will most likely be of great help to this world and its people. Congratulations,” the principal concluded.

The six of them left the ceremony together. As they walked through the academy’s hallways, the others no longer looked at Charlotte with disdain. Now, they greeted her and treated her like everyone else.

They arrived at the cafeteria and chatted just as they used to.

“That was great,” Leif said.

“It sure was,” Gerald agreed.

“I propose we toast with this cherry and blue lemon juice,” Arthur suggested.

Everyone raised their glasses. Each person toasted to something different.

“To accepting us and to my siblings,” said Leif.

“To forgiveness... and a bright future,” said Alysia.

“To friends and their protection,” said Zoe.

“To overcoming our fears and taking control of our destiny,” said Gerald.

“To this party… may they have many more adventures together,” said Arthur.

Charlotte cherished those moments. In her mind, she thought about the future. She didn’t know what it held for her, but she was no longer alone.

“What about you, Charlotte?” asked Arthur.

“To be a heroine and to protect my friends.”

Everyone looked at one another and laughed.

“What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing. It’s perfect.”

At that moment, Charlotte didn’t realize she was searching for something she had already found.
