Chapter 2:

THE LIGHT THAT COSTS

THE LONGIBUS GEM: WHAT LOVE CANNOT UNDO

The wind keened through the temple’s innermost chamber, but Aisha felt nothing save the thundering of her own heart. Suspended above the stone rested the Longibus Gem, throbbing with a light of midnight blue and moon-silver, as though it possessed a heartbeat of its own. Within its shifting glow, she could almost discern the faces she had lost.

“We found it, Yukki…” Her voice fractured. “After all this time… we have truly found it.”

He stepped to her side, his hand seeking hers. Scratches marked his skin; old scars stood pale against the new. Yet his gaze rested only upon her.

“You did not falter,” he murmured. “Not even when all hope seemed dust.”

Tears fell freely now, unhindered. “I did not walk this road alone. You were there at every turn. When I stumbled, you raised me. When I was struck, you bore the hurt.” She searched his face as if seeing him for the first time. “Why? Why always you?”

He drew nearer, his voice low and sure. “Because you are written into my destiny, Aisha. Long before we set out in search of legend, I had already found my treasure. And I cannot imagine a world without you in it.”

Everything she had silenced, every confession she had stifled, rose unbidden to her lips. “I too…” She trembled. “I have feared to speak it —feared it would weaken me. But silence is heavier than any burden. I love you, Yukki. More than I ever deemed one heart capable of loving another.”

She leaned toward him and kissed him —a kiss stitched from every unspoken day, every night shared beneath alien skies, every quiet moment of devotion guarded in secret. He held her as if he might dissolve should he let go, and for a breathless span of time, there existed only the two of them, and the gem’s eternal glow, and silence.

Then the moment shattered.

“Exquisite,” a voice cut through the hush —cold, sharp, devoid of warmth. “A tender display, wasted upon those unworthy of true power.”

Aisha pulled away, positioning herself between Yukki and the intruder. A figure cloaked in shadow stood at the chamber’s edge, a blade gleaming in its grasp.

“Who are you?” Her voice rang clear, though her pulse raced. “This relic is not for conquest —it is to save lives.”

“The gem belongs to whomever has the strength to seize it,” the stranger snarled, lunging forward.

Aisha had no time to react. Before she could move, Yukki stepped into the path of steel.

“YUKKI —NO!”

He crumpled into her arms, the stain of life spreading fast across the cloth where she pressed her hands.

“Stay with me…” Her plea dissolved into sobs. “Do not leave me… not now.”

He looked upward, his vision fading, yet his expression remained tender. “Listen to me… take the gem. Return. Save your mother. Save your aunt. Give them the years they were denied. Go home, Aisha —after so long a journey, go home.”

“No,” she wept, shaking her head. “Not without you. Nothing has meaning if you are not beside me.”

“Promise me…” His hand brushed her cheek with the last of his strength. “You have come so far… do not let it be in vain.”

“I love you,” she whispered, her heart shattering anew. “More than life itself. If you are gone, what does it matter that the past may change? You were never merely part of my journey —you were my home.”

His eyes closed slowly in her embrace.

The Longibus Gem blazed upon its pedestal, waiting —but Aisha turned away. She held the one who had walked every mile with her, and for the first time, she did not know which way led forward.
