Chapter 28:
My Hero Academia: Izuku's Ninth Ledger
Training log updated.
Take a breath. The next test is already starting.
✦
All Might entered the classroom through the door like the door had personally challenged the concept of entrances.
"I AM HERE," he shouted, cape snapping behind him, "COMING THROUGH THE DOOR LIKE A NORMAL TEACHER!"
The room lost its mind in several different dialects.
Kaminari made a noise too high to be dignified. Kirishima slapped both hands on his desk and whispered something about manliness with genuine reverence. Mina bounced in her seat, Sero laughed at Kaminari, and even Iida, who definitely had opinions about shouting indoors, looked like a younger version of himself had escaped through his posture.
I sat very still.
Everyone else saw the Symbol of Peace in a doorway. I saw the angle of his ribs beneath the muscle form, the way his left side pulled tight when he lifted his arm, and the split-second check he made toward me before he found his teaching smile again.
I also saw my mentor trying to enjoy the job. That part hurt in a different direction.
All Might's eyes skimmed the room. They found me for half a second, too fast for most people and not fast enough for Aizawa if he had been lurking somewhere with a file and a coffee. Luckily, he was not there. Probably.
U.A. made paranoia feel like a required course.
"Foundational Heroics!" All Might boomed. "The class where you learn the most essential part of professional hero work!"
Kirishima leaned forward so hard his desk complained. "Please tell me this involves combat training and not another surprise fitness test."
"I am betting on costumes," Mina guessed, already half out of her chair.
Iida raised one hand, formal even while vibrating. "Public safety application would also be appropriate for the course title."
All Might lifted one finger. "All of the above!"
The wall compartments opened. Cases slid out, each marked with a student number. Hero costumes. Real ones. The whole class surged into noise, and for one breath I forgot to be afraid.
Then I saw my case near the end, green trim visible through the label window, and fear came back wearing my mother's hands.
I had filled out the form. I had argued with myself over every line of the design because canon nostalgia and survival requirements had hated each other on sight. Inko had sat at the kitchen table with me for the first sketch, smoothing the paper when my pencil dug too hard.
It should still look like you, she had said.
I had almost asked which me.
The case was heavier than it looked. In the changing room, chaos arrived in eight seconds: fabric rustling, cases clicking open, someone complaining about boots, Sero asking whether tape dispensers counted as pockets, and Kirishima saying yes to his reflection with the sincerity of a man making a vow.
I opened my case last.
Green fabric. Reinforced seams. Light armor at shoulders, ribs, knees, and hips. Support braces built into the sleeves and calf liner, hidden unless someone knew what to look for. Grip-friendly gloves that protected the bad finger. Shock-absorbing soles meant for microbursts, not jumps. A hood that could come up if smoke, dust, or cameras became a problem.
No big rabbit-ear mask. Sorry, younger me. Some nostalgia got you killed.
Tucked inside the case was a note in Inko's careful handwriting.
Please remember that a costume is not permission to get hurt.
The card on our refrigerator was plainer: stop when pain changed how I moved, say where it hurt, ask for a pause, and tell the instructor. The suit did not cancel any of it.
I stared at the note for longer than I should have. Around me, the others were laughing, wrestling with zippers, bragging, pretending not to brag. I folded the paper once and slid it into the inside pocket over my heart.
The suit fit.
Not like forgiveness. Like an instruction.
When I stepped out, the class was still reacting to itself. Iida looked like a high-speed emergency vehicle designed by a family committee. Kirishima's exposed arms and hardened shoulders announced exactly what he wanted the world to believe about him, and he looked embarrassed by how much he meant it. Kaminari had managed to look flashy and underprepared at the same time. Sero kept testing his elbows. Todoroki's costume was so plain it looked like an argument against everyone else's enthusiasm, ice already crawling faintly over one side.
Uraraka looked at my gloves, then my calf braces, and did not say anything immediately.
That helped.
Bakugo walked out last enough to make it feel deliberate. Grenade gauntlets. Heavy boots. Combat readiness turned into fashion. He looked dangerous because he was.
His eyes found my suit.
He took in the braces, the gloves, the reinforced soles, the places the armor protected joints instead of showing off. The scorch mark outside the training room yesterday had not been an accident after all. He had heard enough, seen enough, and built the wrong answer out of real pieces.
"Planning to survive now, Deku?" he said.
"Trying a new hobby with terrible footwear."
"Won't make you fast enough."
"Probably why the boots are doing emotional support."
His palms crackled. It was not a full threat, but it wanted to become one.
All Might clapped loud enough to save my poor impulse control. "Everyone looks heroic!"
Jiro glanced at Kaminari's jacket. "Some people look like they fought a discount rack and negotiated peace."
"That hurt in a weirdly specific way," Kaminari said.
"Then the jacket is doing important work."
The laughter broke the pressure before it could turn sharp. Bakugo looked away first, which meant nothing good.
All Might led us to Ground Beta, an indoor training building that had no business existing inside a school. Concrete corridors, multiple floors, observation rooms, utility closets, fake offices, fake pipes, and real money pretending to be a city.
I had watched this place collapse in animation. Standing inside it made my palms sweat.
"Today's trial," All Might said, "is a two-on-two indoor battle. One team plays heroes. One team plays villains. The villains guard a mock weapon. The heroes either capture the villains or secure the weapon before time expires."
He held the pose for the class, but up close I could see the teacher under the symbol, counting faces and rules and risk. No one laughed. The silence respected him more than the cheering had.
"Teams will be selected by lot!"
My stomach tightened. Canon had a sense of humor. Reality had teeth.
The names came out.
Team A: Midoriya Izuku and Ochaco Uraraka.
Uraraka's eyes widened, then she gave me a small nervous smile. "Looks like we get to test the hallway rule sooner than expected."
Pause.
The word landed before panic could. I breathed in, held it for two counts, and let my fingers unclench from the glove seam.
"Yeah, and sooner than I hoped," I said.
Team D: Bakugo Katsuki and Iida Tenya.
The room went quiet for a fraction too long. Even people who did not know our history understood pressure when it walked into the room smiling.
Bakugo smiled. Not wide. Not loud. Just enough.
"Finally, something worth the uniform," he said.
Iida looked between us, posture tightening around duty. "I expect us to conduct this exercise with professionalism and respect for the educational purpose."
Bakugo did not look at him. "Try not to lecture the fake bomb."
Iida inhaled through his nose. "I will treat the assigned role seriously."
"That is what I said if you remove the lecture."
It was not, and everyone nearby knew it. That was the problem with Bakugo: sometimes the insult was the evidence, sometimes the evidence was bait, and sometimes he just wanted to watch people flinch.
All Might's smile held, but concern sat underneath it. He had hoped this might happen. Or feared it. With him, those had started to look similar whenever I was involved.
The remaining teams were drawn. Some students groaned. Some cheered. Todoroki ended up scheduled later, which meant he would watch. So would Yaoyorozu, taking in rules like she could already see the shape of better procedures.
So, probably, would Aizawa from some dark corner of the building where coffee went to die.
The Ledger stirred.
[Known Event Approaching]
Battle Trial
Canon Team Pattern: confirmed
Current Variables: prior Uraraka contact, Bakugo suspicion, medical restrictions
I did not need the list. I felt every variable like gravel in my shoes.
All Might sent Bakugo and Iida to the villain preparation room first. We would have five minutes before entering. Five minutes sounded generous until it became the entire distance between a lesson and a mistake.
In canon, Izuku had spent that time shaking, muttering, and building a strategy around surviving Bakugo long enough for Uraraka to act. I could feel that route waiting for me. Easy. Familiar. Poisonous.
Uraraka and I stood in the waiting corridor under a camera that looked harmless in the way knives looked harmless from across a room. She tightened one glove strap.
"pause," I said before she could ask the first question.
Her head turned quickly. "Pain or head?"
"Head. I am about to give you a very efficient answer that treats me like hallway furniture."
She blinked once, then nodded like that made perfect sense. Maybe it did. U.A. had strange standards by lunch on day two.
"Okay, then start with what I need to know, and leave out the part where you quietly volunteer to be exploded," she said.
The answer wanted to come anyway. Bakugo: fast starts, aerial control, pressure, anger, feints hidden inside volume. Iida: straight-line acceleration, rule commitment, weapon-room defense. Uraraka: objective path, ceiling access, debris control.
I swallowed half of it.
"Bakugo knows me well enough to punish the obvious route," I said. "He is loud, not careless. If he sees me protecting a path, he will assume I want him there."
"And Iida?"
"He will take villainy as a job assignment. He may overcommit to guarding the weapon because the rules told him that is his duty."
Uraraka studied the map on the wall instead of watching my face. Good choice. It made it easier to think.
"So if I head for the stairwell, Bakugo tries to cut you off, and Iida watches the door?"
"Likely, but not certain enough to trust."
"What are your limits?"
The question was the missing piece.
"below 1% for any practical output," I said. "No airborne recovery. No taking hits to hold position, timing, or pride. If I get knocked off balance upstairs, I do not fix that in the air."
Her mouth tightened. "That last one sounds like someone wrote it after meeting you."
"Recovery Girl has a gift."
"Then we use the gift. You do not stand in a hallway and absorb him. I go high, but not because you are bait. Because I can move the weapon-room problem from a direction Iida may not respect."
I looked at the map. She pointed to the side stairwell, then the ceiling space over the mock weapon room. Not a perfect route. A real one, which was better.
"If Bakugo damages the building, loose concrete becomes yours," I said.
"And if he doesn't?"
"Then we make him choose between chasing me and letting you change the room."
She smiled, nervous but sharper now. "Better than hallway furniture by a lot."
"You are allowed to tell me when I start doing the hallway-furniture thing again."
"I was absolutely going to do that."
"Of course you were; fair enough."
The speaker crackled. All Might's voice filled the corridor. "Team A, prepare to enter!"
My pulse slowed. Not calm. Usable. The suit braces held my calf snugly. The note over my heart seemed heavier than paper.
The Ledger flashed again.
[Battle Trial]
Opposing Team: Bakugo Katsuki / Iida Tenya
Primary Risk: emotional output spike
Recommended Action: win through objective, not domination
Objective. Right.
The door opened. Concrete air breathed out around us. Uraraka flexed her fingers.
"Thirty seconds to the stairwell if the hall is clean," she said.
"Twenty if we move clean, but my leg may file a complaint."
"Then we do not race your leg. We beat their assumptions."
"Yes, ma'am, moving cleanly it is."
"Do not start with that."
"Sorry. I mean, understood and not flirting with disaster."
She gave me a look that was almost a smile. Then we stepped inside.
The door shut behind us. Somewhere above, a camera turned. Somewhere ahead, Iida waited beside a fake weapon, probably committing to villainy with impressive posture.
And somewhere in the concrete halls, Bakugo had five minutes of evidence, a costume full of clues, a scorch mark from yesterday, and permission to chase me.
The canon path said he would rush straight in.
My foot touched the first stair.
The building shook.
An explosion hit from above and behind, not the front corridor. Uraraka ducked. I grabbed her shoulder strap and pulled us both clear as concrete dust burst through the stairwell door.
Wrong angle. Wrong timing.
Bakugo had not followed canon.
His voice echoed through the smoke.
"I know you plan for me now, Deku."
The Ledger snapped red.
[Canon Pattern Broken]
Ambush Route: altered
Bakugo laughed once, low and furious.
"So start thinking faster than yesterday."
