Chapter 2:

Part II

The Lonely Treasure

The first thing Eveiline bought was something to wear, so no one would look suspicious when the poor girl would suddenly buy food with money. They would think she must have stolen it from someone. She was spending the money wisely, not too much at once, not at the same place, covering her face when possible. Never trusting, never working with the same people, building the story around her.

For hunts we were always going alone and she was very cautious if someone was following us. I knew that she was worried about me, so one would know how she always perfectly knew where the treasure was. If someone found out my current love would be in danger and I had no idea where and with who I would be taken. Since I was with her I didn't want to belong to anyone else. She was always caring me with her, I had always place in her bed because I was the most important thing to her. Eveline loved me and I genuinely loved her back and with pleasure I showed her every treasure we could encounter. Not like I had a choice, but at least I wanted to.

She didn't stop talking to me, so I was actually the only one she trusted. There were a few people she made exceptions to her rule about not working twice with the same person. At times it was easier to make a few people loyal instead of looking for a new one every time we were going somewhere. Also she had to have someone taking care of a few businesses she launched. There were a few of them in different branches. People believed her fortune was coming from being talented and lucky businesswomen, even though as a woman she didn't get immediate respect, but she quickly could prove she deserved it. And I wished I could tell her how proud I was.

I belonged to many people. Some were as good as Eveline, but most of them were nothing more than treasure hunters, who later became thieves. It was faster to use my ability around than going on the next journey. She liked to travel and visit different places, I wasn’t in a few of them yet. The new crew was always hired to take us somewhere, but the captain was the same. He and Eveline’s bodyguard were part of the team she trusted, and I liked them because they never tried to pursue her romantically. The captain liked to joke with an undertone, but Eveline liked him, because he never crossed a line, and as a sailor he was experienced and what’s more had a good intuition. The same goes to the bodyguard, a huge and strong man, but a quiet one, that was why I liked him much better.

My dear became ever more beautiful, so every man was looking more or less in her direction, when she was walking down the street. What was surprising for me, that many tried to make her theirs, but she was never interested. Well, she has me. Some were sure they would be able to remind her what was the proper role for a woman, but her aura was so strong that they quickly resigned. Even though I knew Eveline wasn’t into romance, it started to worry me that after other rejection, she became sadder. And she was the one who was saying no!

“I start to feel a bit lonely,” she announced to me once with all that sadness and longing for another human. But, you have me! Sometimes I had the impression that she understands me and then she just smiled apologetically, looking me in the eyes. “I love you. You saved my life, but you can’t give things I need. What are all the money and valuables, when I have no one to share it or leave it when I die. I don’t expect you to understand but I want a family.” No, I don’t understand you. I should be enough for you. “I am not getting younger, so I hope that soon my heart will beat faster for someone.”

For the first time she put me aside on the table next to bed, not on a pillow next to her. I could only see her back, when she was lying and looking out the window. I just felt like the anger started to grow on me. Eveline belonged to me, as I belonged to her. Years we have spent together were not enough for me, I wanted more, more of her warmth, more of her attention and love. I didn’t want to share, I wanted it all only for me. As soon as someone else would show up in her life, I knew that slowly I would be needed only when the new treasure had to be found. That’s not what we have agreed on…

For a while I was nurturing my frustration, but that night she woke up suddenly in the middle of it and was looking for me desperately. Only when she hugged she could fall asleep again peacefully, so I forgave her for that moment. After calming down I was trying to convince myself that maybe no one would be there for you. Maybe her opinion and everything she worked so hard over the years would scare away potential candidates. She had a strong character, and men didn’t like it, so there was a big chance that nothing would change. Eveline will be unhappy for a while, but she was smart, she would understand that’s for better and we would be happy again.

It took the next few years until that someone changed her life forever. I thought that I was safe if so much time had already passed, but no. I was sitting in a little pocket on the inside of the dress, so I noticed a slight change in her heartbeat, so it took me by surprise, especially that I couldn't see anything.

“Are you okay?” She asked someone. What's going on? We were just about to enter the house. Eveline was doing something, like carrying a big weight. Is she serious? Really taking him inside?!

I couldn't understand why I was put again on the table, while that man was lying on the chaise longue in our saloon, where Eveline had guests over. Poor furniture got dirty with his blood, as he was all covered in wounds which Eveline was taking care of with delicateness. She forgot about my existence for a while, when staying all night long with him, changing compresses and making sure he will make it through to the next day. I wouldn't mind if he won't.

“Did I die…” Unfortunately you didn't. “If I am seeing an angel beside me?”

Hey! Eveline, why are your cheeks red?! You don't react like that when the captain calls you the angel…

“You are not dead. I made sure of it only because you decided to end your life in front of my door.”

She tried to sound cold, but I was seeing clearly that she liked what she was looking at. He must have been attractive, because I wouldn’t believe Eveline could have low standards, when she was the top herself. And soon I realised that probably the thing I was the most afraid of, she started falling for his charm. I was sure his intentions weren’t pure from the very beginning. His name was Neil and I could only observe him when Eveline spent time with him. And that meant most of the days, at least, she kept her wits about herself, and was still hiding me. However I saw what she missed, being under his spell, he pretended to be more in pain than he was in reality and I saw all that looking around on the sly. I can’t believe he showed up in front of her door accidentally, but there was no way I could prove it.

And I couldn’t do anything about Eveline falling in love with that bastard, who took my spot in her bed, who was going around with her, making the other woman jealous. They already were, but when my dear also got a good man, the level of their hateress was the highest. Yeah, they looked good together and Eveline was happy to the point that she signed a document, which Neil held dearly, which would send the chill down my spine if I had one. I wanted so badly to believe that her happiness is my too, but I couldn’t be over the fact, that I was thrown to the scrap heap. Instead I have cumulated all of the negative emotions, even though I tried to direct it to Neil, accusing him of stealing my love. Still I just couldn’t not be angry at Eveline, she was everything to me and I was mad how easily she switched me for him. She didn't even talk to me anymore, because it seemed weird to him.

“That thing…” That hurt Eveline. You used to treat me as a person, not just an object. “is my treasure, the most precious thing I own.” At least she tried to defend me, but what’s hurt even more was that she moment later deliberately shared our secret.

“Why is it so important?” The bastard asked, his eyes were shining bright with excitement, even though he tried to sound just kindly interested.

“It’s leading me to treasures.”
