Chapter 32:
My Hero Academia: Izuku's Ninth Ledger
Training log updated.
Take a breath. The next test is already starting.
✦
Faculty Room B had a couch.
That should have made it less threatening. It did not.
Anything could become threatening if Shota Aizawa stood beside it with a folder in his hand.
The room itself was plain in the way expensive institutions liked to pretend was humble. Long table. Cabinets. Hero law posters. A coffee machine in the corner that looked like it had survived three administrations and learned bitterness from all of them.
All Might was already there in muscle form, smiling too brightly. Recovery Girl sat near the window with my recovery folder open beside her. Principal Nezu sat on the table.
On the table.
Not at it. Because apparently my morning needed a final boss with tea.
"Young Midoriya!" All Might said. "Morning!"
"Morning," I said.
My voice came out cautious enough to need its own helmet.
Nezu poured tea into a tiny cup.
"Please sit."
Worse than being told to stand.
I sat.
Aizawa placed a folder in front of me. My name was on the tab. Midoriya Izuku. Observation File.
The Ledger flickered once.
[Institutional Attention: confirmed]
Then it stayed quiet.
Rude, but preferable.
Aizawa opened the folder.
"We are not here to punish you."
"That sentence has a terrible success rate."
Recovery Girl smiled into her cup. All Might looked pained. Nezu looked delighted. Aizawa did not react.
"We are also not here to guess at your soul," Aizawa said. "Every page in this file has a source. Footage, medical reports, output logs, teacher notes, or your own incident report. If we do not know something, it is marked unknown."
Unknown sounded better than exposed.
It still sounded expensive.
He slid three sheets across the table. Entrance exam stills. Quirk Apprehension Test numbers. Battle Trial footage timestamps. My incident report. Highlighted.
He had highlighted my own words at me.
Cruel man.
"You calculate damage before taking it," he said.
"That seems responsible."
"You normalize it."
Less good.
He tapped the highlighted line. "I do not know why. I know you keep doing it."
The distinction mattered. It also made escape routes smaller.
All Might's smile held in public shape, but the corners frayed.
Recovery Girl leaned forward. "Your recovery curve is better than I would expect from the force involved. That does not make the injury acceptable. It means you are exactly the kind of patient who will start treating improvement as permission."
"I am following the recovery file."
"Since yesterday," she said.
"An undefeated record."
"A short one."
Fair.
Nezu set down his cup with both paws.
"We have another data point. The Battle Trial report lists Uraraka Ochaco's capture of the weapon as the winning action."
My hands stopped under the table.
Nezu's ears twitched. "That is not being reassigned to you."
Relief hit so quickly it almost looked like guilt.
Aizawa noticed. Of course he did.
"What concerns us," he said, "is the structure around it. You gave Uraraka the authorized limit, then exceeded it without warning. She adjusted and won. That is her authorship. Your file records both facts."
All Might exhaled very softly.
I had not known I was waiting for someone to say it that cleanly until the words were in the room.
"Understood," I said.
"Do you?" Aizawa asked.
"I am trying to."
"Try with reports."
Not forgiveness. Paperwork.
All Might finally spoke, quieter now.
"Young Midoriya, no one here needs you to explain everything today."
That surprised me. I looked at him. He knew exactly how much weight he was putting into that sentence.
No one here. Today.
Aizawa glanced at him, then back to me. "Your Quirk file remains provisional. U.A. accepts late manifestations, unstable output, and poor documentation. We also accept that some students arrive with private medical, family, or agency circumstances."
Private agency circumstances.
A phrase wearing gloves.
Nezu smiled.
"Discretion is one of the few institutional habits I recommend."
I believed that. I also believed the principal could make discretion feel like a chessboard.
"What do you need from me?" I asked.
Aizawa's eyes narrowed, but not in irritation.
Correct question, apparently.
"Honest reporting of pain, output, and loss of control. No unsupervised attempts above your authorized range. No using classmates as emotional pressure valves. No hiding relevant limitations from partners."
Every sentence landed with annoying precision.
"Understood."
"Say it back."
I stared at him.
"Really?"
"Yes."
My dignity took a quiet step into traffic.
"Honest reporting of pain, output, and loss of control," I said. "No unsupervised attempts above my authorized range. No using classmates as emotional pressure valves. No hiding relevant limitations from partners."
"Accepted."
"Do I get a sticker?"
"You get continued enrollment."
"Better than a sticker."
Recovery Girl closed the recovery folder halfway. "You also get weekly medical review until your output stops behaving like a dare."
All Might's smile faltered.
"That seems... thorough."
"You are in the heroics coordination column," Aizawa said.
All Might blinked. "I am?"
"You are."
Nezu's tea cup hid too much of his smile.
"Toshinori, you gave a powerful student private expectations, then entered him into a combat curriculum where those expectations became someone else's safety issue. Coordination is not a punishment. It is maintenance."
All Might looked as if someone had handed him a mirror and a bill.
"Yes," he said after a second. "Understood."
He did not make a speech. He did not make it about faith.
He looked worried enough that I almost apologized.
Aizawa tapped the last section of the page.
"Partner disclosure."
I read it.
My stomach tightened.
"For exercises?"
"For field simulations and team training. If a limitation affects your partner's risk, they need to know."
Uraraka's face flashed through my mind.
No secret injury rules.
"Reasonable," I said.
"You say that like it tastes bad."
"I am adjusting."
"Adjust faster."
The cost arrived in smaller print below the rule.
Weekly review. Medical log. Output log. Heroics coordination. Partner disclosure. Teacher access. Temporary restriction on unsupervised escalation drills. Any repeat omission would trigger removal from team exercises until reviewed.
Protection could look a lot like a cage if the ink was tidy enough.
My thumb found the edge of the page.
"Does my mother get this?"
Recovery Girl's expression softened by one degree. "Not the full file. With your consent, she gets the medical restrictions and injury reporting requirements. Enough to help keep you alive, no more."
The word consent landed heavier than student.
All Might looked down.
He should. So should I.
Nezu's eyes brightened.
"One more matter."
Of course there was.
He turned a tablet toward me.
The paused footage showed the end of the entrance exam. Me looking up. Aizawa in the observation line.
Camera angle too far for normal eye contact.
But there I was, staring almost directly at him.
My blood chilled.
"Did you see Professor Aizawa during the exam?" Nezu asked.
The room went silent.
All Might did not move. Recovery Girl watched my face, not the screen. Aizawa watched everything.
Careful.
Truth, but narrow.
"I saw someone watching."
"From that distance?"
"I was looking for evaluators after the zero-pointer."
"Why?"
"Because I knew using my Quirk that way would draw attention."
True enough to stand.
Nezu studied me with cheerful eyes that missed nothing.
"A practical concern."
"Yes."
"And the expression on your face?"
I looked at the screen. The boy in the footage looked exhausted, scared, and caught.
"I realized passing would not be the end of being tested."
Aizawa closed the folder.
"Correct."
That felt like permission to breathe.
Not safety.
Permission.
The meeting ended with signatures, recovery requirements, and a schedule that looked like someone had weaponized responsible adulthood.
My first copy went to Aizawa. Recovery Girl kept the medical page. Nezu kept the index. All Might received a coordination sheet and stared at it like it might explode.
"Do I sign here?" he asked.
"After reading," Recovery Girl said.
"Of course."
He read.
Too fast.
"Again," she said.
He read again.
Slower.
I felt less alone in trouble than before.
Still not safe.
All Might walked me out in his thin form after waiting for the hall to clear. He looked older than he had in the room.
"I am sorry," he said.
"For which part?"
His mouth twitched.
"Several."
"Do not be."
"Young Midoriya."
"Sir, U.A. noticing was inevitable. We knew Aizawa would be a problem."
"You did."
I looked at him.
He looked back. No smile now.
"You knew him before meeting him."
The hallway felt too bright.
"I knew his type."
"That is not the same."
"No."
He waited.
I hated that he had learned silence from me.
"I know more than I can explain safely," I said. "But the more I change, the less I can trust it."
All Might's face tightened with worry.
"And the League?"
The word finally entered the hall.
The word neither of us had said enough. League. Shigaraki. Kurogiri. Nomu. U.S.J. The event waiting on the road like a hole under leaves.
"The timeline has already moved," I said. "If U.A. noticed me, others might too. Not immediately, maybe. Eventually."
All Might looked down the hall as if he expected danger to round the corner wearing a school uniform.
"Then we prepare."
He stopped himself.
The correction hurt before he said it.
"No," he said. "That is what I want to say because it sounds like action. We prepare without rushing your body and without turning every person near you into a shield."
Better.
It also sounded like something he had just learned from being scolded by a tiny doctor and a mammal principal.
"I knew you were going to add the body part."
"I nearly forgot the rest."
"Progress?"
"Humbling progress."
He placed one thin hand on my shoulder. The good one.
"You are not alone in this."
That sentence should have helped.
It did.
Which was why it hurt.
I could not look at him without seeing both versions at once: the man in the hall, thin hand resting on my good shoulder, and the symbol canon had asked to carry everything alone until his body gave out.
The worst truths crowded my mouth. His injury. The people coming for him. The way one honest warning might save a life or break the road under both of us.
"I know," I said.
"Do you?"
Everyone had started asking better questions.
Terrible trend.
"I am trying to."
All Might accepted that, which proved he was kinder than Aizawa and less terrifying than Nezu.
Low bar, but still.
He left first.
I stayed by the window a minute longer, watching students cross the campus below.
Uraraka walked with Mina and Tsuyu, laughing at something Mina said. Iida moved beside them, gesturing with one hand like he had accidentally started a lecture. Kirishima jogged backward in front of Bakugo, talking with heroic disregard for self-preservation.
Bakugo looked annoyed.
He did not leave.
Progress, maybe. Or setup for a later explosion.
Both fit.
The Ledger pulsed once.
[Institutional Attention: confirmed]
Faculty Oversight: active
Partner Trust Variable: fragile
Villain Intelligence Risk: unknown
Unknown.
I hated that word more than danger. Danger could be mapped.
Unknown sat behind the map and smiled.
***
In a dim room far from U.A., a television played hero news with the sound turned low.
The League of Villains was not a league yet. Not really.
It was a name, a room, a handful of resentments, and a man-child scratching at his neck while the world failed to become interesting fast enough.
Tomura Shigaraki hated school coverage.
He hated cheering crowds.
He hated All Might's name spoken like a prayer by people who would scream if the lights went out.
Still, Sensei had told him to watch.
So he watched.
The report showed U.A.'s incoming class only in fragments. No full exam data. No protected student files. Public shots, blurred footage, speculation about the next generation of heroes.
Then one image paused.
A green-haired student being carried toward medical aid after the practical exam. Not much. A flash of light around the legs. A girl in a gravity suit beside him. A tired man in the observation line looking down.
Shigaraki scratched harder.
"Boring."
The screen changed before he could look away.
A hand settled on the back of his chair.
"Not that one," a calm voice said through the speaker in the wall.
Shigaraki went still.
"Sensei?"
"The green-haired boy. Save the image."
"Why?"
A pause.
Not long.
Long enough to matter.
"Because All Might has begun making mistakes."
Shigaraki leaned closer to the screen. The boy looked half-dead and stubborn. Nothing special.
Probably.
"Is he strong?"
"Perhaps not yet."
"Then why care?"
The voice through the speaker softened.
"Because the valuable pieces are rarely dangerous only after they are strong."
Shigaraki stared at the image until irritation became interest.
"What is he?"
Another pause.
"A question."
The word made the room colder.
Shigaraki smiled for the first time that day.
"Questions can be broken."
The voice did not laugh.
"Some can. Some answer back."
On the screen, the green-haired student looked toward the camera as if he knew someone, somewhere, would eventually be watching.
Shigaraki scratched his neck until the skin reddened.
"Then I want to see him at U.S.J."
The speaker went silent.
After class, the hallway sounded too normal for the amount of damage we had nearly done to each other.
Someone argued about lunch. Someone laughed too loudly. Bakugo slammed a locker hard enough to make three conversations die. Class 1-A was already learning how to pretend nothing had changed, which meant everything had.
In that silence, the future shifted one more inch off the road I remembered.
