Chapter 34:
Naruto: Shadow Clone System
Mission update is live.
Get comfortable. The village is watching.

Kakashi looked worse in the morning. He claimed this meant improvement. Sakura disagreed with enough force to make the argument medical.
"You have chakra exhaustion, muscle fatigue, and a delayed stress response from using the Sharingan," she said, standing beside the bed with bitter tea in one hand. "If you stand too quickly, you will fall."
Kakashi reached for the cup. "I fall with style."
"You fall expensively."
Naruto leaned against the doorway. "She has data. We carried you." Sasuke sat by the front window with his ribs wrapped under his shirt and his pride wrapped tighter. "You were inconvenient."
"My students are cruel," Kakashi said.
"Your students are correct," Sakura replied.
Tsunami passed behind her with breakfast bowls and hid a smile badly. Daylight did not make the house safer. It only made the weak points honest. Tsunami had moved the night watch around the water trip, leaving Sakura at the rear threshold while Naruto escorted her and Sasuke stayed seated at the front. Sakura's third watch still showed in her eyes.
Gaps between boards. Knife marks in the kitchen table. A shelf where jars had been moved to disguise empty space. A string tied from Sasuke's cup to the front latch. Inari in the corner, silent and watchful, pretending the act of expecting disappointment could protect him from it.
Naruto ate rice and fish slowly. His stomach wanted more. It could argue with manners later. Tazuna had drawn the bridge in charcoal on spare boards. Support beams. Supply paths. Usual worker routes. The place where Gato's men first started collecting tolls no honest stomach could afford. The drawings were ugly, practical, and more valuable than half the mission brief Konoha had accepted.
Beside the drawing lay a worker roll from Tazuna and Tsunami, with Jiro and Aya still marked unconfirmed; neither adult knew where they were. Naruto studied them while pretending to stretch. The old version of the world had given him set pieces. Boards gave him exits.
That difference mattered. Sakura caught him looking and came over with a strip of cloth still wrapped around her wrist. "You see something?"
"Places people run when fog turns panic into a wall."
"Cheerful."
"Accurate."
She did not smile, but the tightness around her mouth changed shape. "Show me." So he did.
Not every fear. Not every possible trap. Just where civilians would bunch near the bridge, where a guard could stand without advertising herself, where Tazuna would try to be brave in exactly the wrong direction, and where Tsunami's water path turned exposed if men watched from the road.
Sakura listened with her arms folded, then corrected two of his guesses because she had watched Tsunami move through the house all night.
"She favors the left step," Sakura said. "The right one complains. She avoids it even when carrying water."
Naruto looked at her.
"What?"
"Nothing. You are terrifying when sleep deprived."
"Then stop giving me reasons."
Kakashi tapped the side of his cup. "Needles." Sakura turned at once. "For you?"
"For yesterday."
She hesitated only long enough to dislike the answer, then opened her kit and laid two practice senbon on a folded towel. They were plain steel, clean, and thin enough to make Tazuna look away.
Kakashi did not start with a lecture. He put one needle beside the rim of his cup and let it roll until it settled.
"Look first," he said.
Sasuke moved from the window despite the pull in his ribs. Sakura leaned close. Naruto stayed where he was until Kakashi's eye found him.
"You too."
Naruto came over. The needle looked too slight for the amount of dread in the room. Kakashi set two fingers against the side of his own neck, not pressing, only marking a line. Then he placed the needle against the towel at the same angle the masked hunter had used on Zabuza.
"Too clean for a throat kill," Sakura said first.
Kakashi's eye curved by a fraction. "Why?"
"No tearing. No spray. No struggle after impact. And the hunter checked the placement before moving him."
Tazuna swallowed.
"The hand position," Sasuke said.
Everyone looked at him. He scowled as if attention were an attack. "The hunter lifted from under the shoulders and neck. Careful. Not like carrying remains." Naruto kept quiet. Kakashi turned the needle on the towel. "Continue."
The word was not praise. It was a door. Sakura touched the second needle with the back of one nail. "If the point is precise enough, breathing can slow. Pulse can hide. Not forever."
"Not forever," Kakashi said.
"Then the masked shinobi wanted us to believe Zabuza was dead," she said.
"Likely."
"Why not kill us while you were down?"
The question had been waiting in the house since dawn. No one liked hearing it aloud. Kakashi set both senbon parallel on the towel. "Priority. Timing. Risk. Extraction may have mattered more than escalation. Killing us would have taken longer, made noise, or damaged the client they still need as bait."
"You let them leave," Sasuke said.
No heat. Worse than heat.
"I chose four living people over a chase I could not finish," Kakashi replied.
Sasuke looked away first. His jaw worked once.
"Could we have stopped them?" Sakura asked.
"No."
The answer came too fast to be kind. That made it kinder.
"If I forced another fight," Kakashi said, "you would have been protecting Tazuna against Zabuza's ally while I could barely stand. The best likely result was losing the client and one of you."
The house cooled. Naruto looked at the towel. Two slim lines of steel. Two facts sharp enough to cut through the comfort of victory. Kakashi's eye shifted to him. "You suspected." Sakura looked over. Sasuke too.
Naruto set his bowl down. "The removal bothered me."
"Before or after I said it should?" Sasuke asked.
"Before."
"Convenient."
"Annoying," Naruto said. "Not convenient."
Sasuke's fingers curled against the windowsill. Sakura stepped in before the line snapped. "Facts," she said, borrowing Kakashi's word with no apology. Naruto nodded once. "The mask arrived too fast after the hit. The placement looked chosen, not lucky. The hunter touched the neck before lifting him. No disposal on site. No check on us except distance. They wanted out."
"And you knew to look for that because?" Sasuke asked.
"Because yesterday had too many neat edges."
"That is not an answer."
"It is the one I have."
Sasuke's stare sharpened. "You always have half an answer."
"Usually less."
"Naruto." Sakura's warning was quiet.
He dragged in a breath. The seal under his stomach gave a low pulse of heat, as if anger had knocked from the inside and found someone listening. Tell them enough. Tell them nothing. Chase. Hide. Burn the problem clean.
He flattened both palms on the table until the heat receded.
"I knew Wave was dangerous before Tazuna told us," he said.
Tazuna flinched. Sakura went still. Sasuke's expression closed around the sentence like a fist. Kakashi said nothing. Naruto kept going before silence wrote worse accusations for him. "Not details. Not enough to avoid the Demon Brothers. Not enough to beat Zabuza. Enough to think the lie at the mission desk mattered. Enough to think mist and bridges and missing-nin were more than coincidence."
"How?" Sasuke asked.
The word was short enough to be dangerous.
"I cannot give that cleanly."
"Then give it dirty."
Sakura surprised all of them with that. Naruto looked at her. She did not look cold. She looked tired, scared, furious, and done accepting fog as a command structure.
"Some things come to me wrong," Naruto said. "Fragments. Pressure. Patterns. I trust them too much sometimes and not enough other times. Yesterday I kept my mouth shut because accusing the masked shinobi without proof could have turned a bad retreat into a worse fight."
"And because you were not sure," Sakura said.
"And because I was not sure."
Sasuke's mouth tightened. "If you keep secret warnings and we bleed for it, that is on you."
"Yes."
The answer made him angrier, not softer. Kakashi finally spoke. "This conversation stays inside this room." Commander voice. No argument survived it.
"Later," Kakashi said to Naruto, "you and I discuss fragments."
"Yes."
"Now only useful risk. Do you believe Zabuza returns?"
"Yes."
"With the masked shinobi?"
"Probably."
"Known tools?"
Naruto looked at the senbon. No name. Names made people feel solved. This one was not solved.
"Needles. Speed. Medical control. Maybe water-country techniques. Maybe ice if the weather turns strange."
Kakashi's visible eye sharpened.
"Maybe?"
"Fog. Cold. Mist country. The way they moved."
"Anything else?"
Loyalty. Devotion. A person turned into a blade and taught to call the handle love. Naruto did not say that.
"They care about Zabuza," he said. "Enough to risk contact in front of you."
"Useful," Sakura said before he could choose a sharper word.
Naruto glanced at her.
"If they care," she said, voice careful, "they might make mistakes. They might also choose something we do not expect. We plan for both. We do not reduce a person to a lever because it sounds tactical."
Tazuna stared at the floor. Sasuke watched Naruto as if waiting to see which argument he would reach for. The old habits in Naruto wanted to defend the harsher word. Accuracy mattered. Sharp thinking kept soft hope from killing people.
Sakura was not asking him to go soft. She was asking him to remember what sharpness could amputate.
"Useful," Naruto said. "Not safe."
Sakura nodded once. Kakashi absorbed the exchange with the stillness of someone taking notes without paper. "Then we train as if both are coming." The room exhaled in pieces. Outside, morning mist clung to the trees like a warning that had decided to stay for breakfast.
Training began an hour later. Kakashi could not fight properly, so he became more annoying instead. He sat on a stump with a blanket over his shoulders and directed them with ruthless precision.
Tree climbing continued until the trees looked personally offended. Sakura refined control drills and threw from vertical bark until her wrist shook. She stopped before pride made it stupid, wrapped the joint again, and wrote guard positions in charcoal on Tazuna's boards.
Sasuke practiced acceleration, angle changes, and silent landings. He favored his ribs on the second turn every time. Naruto noticed. Sasuke noticed him noticing and corrected the next three turns through spite alone.
Naruto worked on holding chakra in his feet while forming seals. Standing on a tree was less useful if his hands became decoration. He kept his clones to two. Not Kakashi's order. His own.
That made everyone suspicious.
"You are voluntarily limiting yourself," Sakura said from the ground.
"Growth is unsettling."
"No. Real reason."
Naruto dispelled one clone after a ten-minute drill and breathed through the returning ache.
"Too many at once and the seal pushes back."
Sakura's expression changed. Sasuke, halfway up a trunk, stopped moving. Kakashi's visible eye did not soften. "Red chakra?"
"Pressure. Heat. No leakage."
"You tell me if that changes."
"Yes."
"Immediately."
"Yes."
The heat under the seal stirred at being discussed, offended and interested. Naruto ignored it with the kind of focus usually reserved for not vomiting. Sasuke dropped from the tree and landed in a crouch. "If the masked shinobi attacks me, do you hesitate?"
Naruto looked at him.
"No."
"If they attack Sakura?"
"No."
"Tazuna?"
"No."
"Zabuza?"
The question landed ugly and useful. Naruto hated him a little for finding the exact weak plank.
"I stop the mission threat," Naruto said.
"Not enough."
"It is the answer I can promise."
Sasuke's eyes went flat. "Then stand where your hesitation hits you first." Sakura stepped between them before the line became a blade. "If emotional ties change enemy choices, we write triggers. We do not pretend feelings disappear because Sasuke hates them."
Sasuke glared. She glared back. Naruto wisely chose life and did not applaud. Kakashi's eye curved faintly. "Sakura is correct." She looked startled.
"Do not enjoy it too much," Kakashi added.
"Too late," Naruto said.
Sakura threw a twig at him. The tension bent. It did not break. For Team Seven, that counted. They trained until afternoon blurred into exhaustion.
Naruto reached stable movement on vertical bark while forming simple seals. Sasuke landed four silent direction changes and looked furious that anyone had witnessed it. Sakura made Inari hold string between chairs as a bridge model while she tested where civilians would panic, where Tazuna would be exposed, and where a guard could see both road and water.
The boy complained the entire time. He still held the string steady. Near dusk, Tsunami returned from the water path with an empty basket and a frown.
"Someone cut feverfew by the south trees," she said.
Kakashi opened his eye.
"How fresh?" Sakura asked.
"Today. Clean knife. Not mine."
Naruto felt the air narrow. Medicine, then. For pain. Fever. Inflammation. Someone nearby was preparing for a wounded man to live.
"No one goes alone," Sakura said immediately.
Kakashi nodded. "Correct."
"We still need to know if the path is watched," Sasuke said.
"We do," Kakashi said. "We do not satisfy curiosity by donating a teammate."
Naruto looked toward the trees. The fox heat pressed once under his skin. Chase. He kept both feet where they were.
"Perimeter in pairs," Sakura said. "Short loops. No pursuit. Mark signs, return, compare."
Kakashi looked at Naruto.
"I heard it," Naruto said.
"Hear it twice."
"No pursuit."
Sasuke pushed away from the tree. "I go with him."
"Ribs," Sakura said.
"Eyes," Sasuke answered.
Almost teamwork. Ugly, suspicious teamwork, but the useful kind. Kakashi allowed it with a nod. The south path smelled of wet leaves, old smoke, and crushed green stems.
Naruto and Sasuke found three cut plants near a patch of soft mud. No footprints clear enough to trust. No dropped needle. No mask. Just a clean blade mark and a place where careful fingers had pressed the leaves aside instead of tearing them out.
Sasuke crouched, one hand near his ribs. "Careful."
"Yes."
"Not bandits."
"No."
"Same person?"
Naruto looked at the neat cuts. The thought wanted a name. He denied it one.
"Same kind of hand," he said.
They marked the tree with a shallow notch and went back before dusk became a reason. No chase. No answer. Only needles, herbs, a living enemy, and a house learning how to survive the space between attacks.
