Chapter 41:

House of Hostages

Naruto: Shadow Clone System

Mission update is live.

Get comfortable. The village is watching.

The first rule of defending a house was admitting the house wanted to betray you.

Doors opened both ways. Windows broke before anyone finished arguing about whether they would hold. Floorboards complained under the wrong foot. Walls made frightened people feel protected while telling an enemy exactly where to aim fear. Naruto had known all of that as trivia. Sakura made it practical.

"Tsunami, kitchen doorway," she said, already moving the woman away from the window. "Inari, pantry rope. Tazuna, no heroics unless the floor asks for one."

"It is my house," Tazuna snapped.

"Then know where the weak boards are and stop standing on one."

He looked down. Moved. Sasuke gave Sakura a sideways glance that contained, against all odds, respect. Naruto stored it for later blackmail, assuming later remained available.

The three men outside split with the lazy confidence of bullies who expected a frightened family, an old drunk, and maybe one injured shinobi too ruined to matter. They carried knives, clubs, one short sword, and the damp swagger of people who had never fought anyone capable of punishing bad posture.

Not shinobi. Still dangerous. Civilians died from non-shinobi all the time. Rank did not stop a blade from entering soft places. Kakashi remained on the futon, propped against the wall, pale enough that the bandage at his eye looked more alive than he did. One hand rested near his kunai pouch.

"Naruto," he said softly.

"Two clones. Noise and delay."

"Sasuke."

"Outer left."

"Sakura."

"Interior defense."

Kakashi's visible eye moved once. Approval, maybe. Or exhaustion wearing a mask.

"Tazuna," Naruto added.

The bridge builder looked offended by being assigned by a genin. "What?"

"You know the floor. You call boards if someone steps wrong."

Tazuna's anger stumbled into usefulness. "Front porch, third from the left. Hall by the storage room. Back step is loose. Kitchen window sticks if you lift before you pull."

Sakura pointed at him. "Stay where you can see both doors."

"I'm not helpless."

"Then prove it by being useful instead of dramatic."

Tsunami made a choked sound that might have been terror or agreement. Inari stared at Sakura as if he had discovered a new form of authority. Naruto approved. No speech. No shine. Just hands moving before fear became furniture.

Naruto created two clones with a contained pulse of chakra. The seal pressed back, annoyed but quiet. One clone dropped flat and slid under the house into the wet crawlspace. The other went through the back door and immediately began shouting toward the hidden dock.

"Hey! Wrong house! Wrong kidnapping! Terrible customer service!"

The nearest man swore and turned. Professional? No. Effective? Beautifully.

Sasuke moved through the side window like a shadow with opinions. The first attacker never saw him. A kick folded the man's knee sideways without breaking it, followed by a clean strike to the wrist that dropped the knife into mud.

The second man rushed the porch. Naruto met him at the steps. He did not use a flashy technique. No giant clone wave. No screaming charge. Just a low feint, a shoulder into the ribs, and a heel behind the ankle exactly the way Kakashi had drilled them until bruises became education.

The man hit the stairs with a wooden crack and lost the club before he finished groaning.

"Board," Tazuna barked from inside.

Naruto shifted half a step. The attacker recovered faster than expected and lunged. His heel landed where Naruto's had been. The plank dipped. Balance vanished from his face before the rest of him followed. His elbow finished the lesson.

Useful old man. Naruto would never say it aloud. Probably.

The third man chose the back. Smarter than the others. He circled wide, low to the wall, and slipped past the shouting clone near the dock because noise was not the same as a body. Naruto saw the angle too late. Tsunami was in the kitchen doorway. Inari was three steps behind her, one hand wrapped around the pantry rope until his knuckles blanched.

Naruto almost turned.

"Focus," Kakashi called from inside, voice weak and merciless.

Right. His man still had hands. The attacker on the porch grabbed for Naruto's leg with a hidden knife. Naruto stomped his wrist. Hard. The man screamed.

From the kitchen came Sakura's voice. "Down!"

Tsunami dropped. Not cleanly. Not bravely in any storybook way. She fell sideways, shoulder striking the table, and pulled Inari's sleeve as she went. A knife crossed the space her throat had occupied.

Inari did not freeze. He made a sound like a swallowed sob and yanked the pantry rope with both hands.

The rope jerked through two hooks Naruto and Sasuke had argued about for fifteen stupid minutes the night before. A rack of drying nets fell across the kitchen threshold. The attacker cursed, stumbled, and caught himself on the doorframe.

Sakura was already there.

She did not look heroic. She looked furious, pale, and very busy. One foot pinned the net. One hand shoved Tsunami farther under the table. The other pressed a kunai under the attacker's jaw before he could tear free.

"Hands open," she said.

He moved his elbow instead.

Sakura increased pressure until a bead of blood formed. "I said hands."

His respect expanded like a bruise.

Outside, Sasuke dragged the first man by the collar and threw him beside the porch. "Done."

"Mine is emotionally processing consequences," Naruto said.

The man on the ground cursed at him.

"See? Progress."

Then the crawlspace clone hissed once, sharp and wrong.

Naruto felt it through the thin thread before he heard the fourth man. Not at the porch. Not at the kitchen. Under the house, coming from the hidden dock path where the fog swallowed footsteps. Gato had sent three men to be seen and one to finish the quiet part.

Inari heard the sound too. His eyes went to the floorboards. The boy knew his house. Fear made him small, but knowledge made him move. He pointed at the storage room with two trembling fingers.

"Dock hatch," he whispered.

Naruto's stomach dropped.

"No," Kakashi said from the bedroom.

It was not a command to the enemy. It was for Naruto.

Too late. Naruto made a third clone.

Only for a breath. Only because the man under the floor had a short blade and the clone below was pinned in mud. Only because Inari stood above the hatch and Tsunami had just hit the table hard enough to gasp. Only because every rule sounded reasonable until someone's mother was on the floor.

The seal pushed back like a fist behind his ribs.

The third clone appeared in the storage room doorway, caught the hatch ring, and slammed his weight down. Wood cracked. The man below drove the blade up through the gap. The clone dissolved before the point reached Inari's foot.

Feedback hit Naruto white and hot. Mud. Blade. Splinter. Panic. He staggered on the porch, and the attacker beneath him twisted free enough to drive an elbow into his knee.

"Overcast!" Sakura snapped.

The word cut cleaner than pain. Naruto killed the extra shape before instinct could reach for another. His remaining porch clone vanished with a pop that left his ears ringing. Two bodies again. Barely.

Sasuke crossed the yard and kicked the porch attacker in the temple before the man could stand. "Idiot."

"Ow," Naruto said, which covered several categories.

"Both of you later," Sakura said. "Dock first."

Kakashi laughed once. It sounded terrible. "She outranks you now."

"I noticed," Naruto muttered.

The crawlspace clone solved the dock problem without elegance. He bit the attacker's sleeve, shoved one shoulder into rotten beam, and pulled the man into the shallow water where the hidden dock met the underhouse shadow. The blade splashed away. The clone held him there with both arms and a lot of personal resentment until Sasuke arrived.

Sasuke hauled the fourth man out by the back of his shirt. His expression promised a future rich in criticism. The clone released, stumbled, and broke apart before Naruto ordered it to. More mud. More cold. More borrowed fear. Naruto swallowed bile.

"Two clones," Kakashi said from the doorway.

"I know."

"Knowing is cheaper before the third one."

No one laughed. That made it worse.

Kakashi leaned on the frame, visible eye lazy again, which meant the danger had passed or he wanted everyone to believe it had. "Names."

The attackers discovered silence.

Sasuke stepped on one dropped knife and flicked it into his hand. "Try again."

"Sasuke," Kakashi said.

"What?"

"Less theater."

"It worked."

"Annoyingly."

The first man broke after thirty seconds. Not because Team Seven tortured him. Because bullies were often allergic to consequences when consequences knew their address. Gato had sent them to scare Tsunami. If Tazuna kept building, they were to take the woman and the boy to the docks. No killing unless necessary. No shinobi engagement unless the older one was alone.

They also carried a strip of red cloth.

The detail meant nothing to Naruto until Tsunami saw it and went still.

"Marker," she said.

Kakashi looked at her.

"For houses that owe," she continued. Her voice held together by force. "Collectors tie it outside before returning with more men. Everyone sees. Nobody helps."

The room seemed to shrink around the little strip of cloth. Naruto wanted to burn it. Instead he handed it to Tazuna.

"Your call."

The old man's fingers closed around it. For once, he did not reach for shame first.

"Tomorrow," Tazuna said hoarsely. "They see it tomorrow."

Necessary. Naruto hated the word more every time someone else used it. Tsunami listened from the kitchen without crying. Inari did not cry either. The boy kept looking at the hatch as if the floor had become an enemy he had known all along.

They tied the men under the house where the beams were thickest and Sasuke could glare at them through the floor cracks. Tazuna wanted to hit one. Kakashi told him no in the tone adults used when the answer had already become law.

Then the house had to keep being a house. That took longer than the fight.

Combat ended when bodies stopped moving. Fear did not.

Every noise outside made Tsunami turn her head. Every groan from below made Inari's hands tighten. Tazuna kept walking from door to window to door again until Sakura told him to sit or start sweeping. He swept. Badly. But he swept.

Broken bowl swept. Chair righted. Door braced. Dinner reheated though no one had appetite left. Tsunami washed blood from the threshold with steady hands until Sakura gently took the cloth from her.

"I can do it," Tsunami said.

"I know," Sakura replied. "I can too."

After a moment, Tsunami let go.

Inari sat near the hearth, knees tucked close. Naruto lowered himself beside him with enough space to be refused. His knee throbbed. His ribs hated the third clone. The seal had gone quiet in the way a dog went quiet after biting the leash.

"You pulled the rope," Naruto said.

Inari's head snapped up. Too soon. Naruto almost took it back. Then the boy looked toward Sakura, who was rinsing red water from her fingers, and the anger in his face became something less certain.

"She was scared," Inari said.

"Yes."

"But she still moved."

"Yes."

Inari swallowed. "Why?"

Naruto looked at Sakura too. She caught them staring and frowned. "What?"

"Being admired," Naruto said.

"Stop that."

Inari almost smiled. Almost. Naruto counted it anyway because he was shameless.

Later, while the prisoners slept badly and Sasuke kept first watch with professional gloom, Kakashi called the team and Tazuna's family into the side room.

"Gato knows the house matters," he said. "The bridge attack will come soon."

"Tomorrow?" Sakura asked.

"Likely."

Tazuna gripped the doorframe. "The workers will not come if they hear about this."

"Then they need to hear the right version," Naruto said.

Everyone looked at him. He spread his hands. "Gato sent men to take a woman and a kid because he cannot win clean. That is not strength. It is fear with hired boots."

Kakashi's eye narrowed with interest.

"You want the village angry," Sasuke said.

"I want them informed."

"Same thing if done well."

"You're learning my charm."

"I hate that sentence."

Sakura tapped a finger against her arm. "If people arrive at the bridge angry but unorganized, they become hostages."

"So we organize exits first," Naruto said. "Signals. Tools hidden as tools. Boats ready. Anyone who comes knows they can run without blocking everyone else."

"And if they refuse?" Tazuna asked.

"Then they refuse knowing the truth."

Tsunami looked up from the hearth. "Truth can get people killed."

Naruto met her eyes. No easy answer lived there.

"So can silence."

She held his gaze for a long moment, then looked at Inari. The boy looked back at her, still pale, still alive, still holding himself together with both hands.

"We decide together," Tsunami said.

Tazuna closed his eyes. The admission hurt him more than charging a bridge ever would.

"Together means they hear the risk too," Sakura said.

Tsunami nodded. "Yes."

"Not just the brave version," Sasuke added from the wall.

Everyone looked at him. He shrugged one shoulder. "Brave versions get people killed."

Naruto wanted to frame the sentence and use it against him for years. He settled for not smiling because the timing was poor.

Tazuna stared at the red cloth in his hand. "You're asking my people to stand against Gato."

"No," Naruto said. "I'm asking you to stop deciding for them because you're ashamed."

The old man flinched as if slapped. No one rescued him from it. Shame could become action if left alone long enough to hate itself.

No fanfare followed. Only rain against the roof, rope fibers drying by the stove, the faint stink of mud from Naruto's clone memories, and Inari staring at Sakura's discarded bloody cloth.

He did not look like he believed in heroes. He looked like he had started doubting the men who killed them.

For tonight, that had to be enough.

Naruto slept in pieces after that. Every time the floor creaked, his hand found a kunai before his mind found the room. By morning, nobody in the house looked rested.

Nobody looked alone either.
