Chapter 13:

The Axe and the Heart

The Veil-Etched Hourglass: Kith and Kin.

Maddox located the cave by tracing the magical imprint left behind by another Veilkeeper. The first two barriers offered little resistance; his enchanted axe shattered their defenses with several powerful blows, dispersing the residual magic into the surrounding air.

The third barrier, however, was considerably more intricate. Recognizing the sophistication of its enchantments, Maddox established telepathic contact with its creator rather than attempting to breach it by force. Only the mage who had woven the barrier could safely dismantle its defenses.

"Veloc Numera."

At the command, the barrier's flames gradually subsided, their brilliance diminishing until the passage beyond lay exposed. Maddox and Damian stepped through without hesitation, the latter visibly impressed by the ease with which his mentor had overcome the obstacles.

"That was awesome."

"Move quickly, Damian."

Golden flames ignited along Damian's sword as they ventured deeper into the cavern. Almost immediately, a swarm of corrupted bats descended upon them, their piercing shrieks reverberating through the narrow passage. Damian met the creatures head-on, his blade sweeping through the air in brilliant arcs that dispatched the attackers before they could close the distance.

Maddox scarcely broke his stride as they reached the ruined staircase.

"Terra Oriemo."

At his command, fragments of stone rose from the debris and fitted themselves together, restoring the ancient steps beneath their feet. They ascended swiftly, only to encounter the tangled mass of corrupted vines that had overrun the passage ahead.

The vegetation glistened beneath a viscous coating that rendered conventional magic considerably less effective. Fortunately, enchanted weapons were particularly suited to combating such adversaries. Damian's golden fire burned through the slimy substance, exposing the vulnerable growth beneath, while Maddox's axe severed the writhing tendrils before they could ensnare them.

Their combined assault cleared the obstruction within moments.

They pressed onward until the passage opened onto a subterranean lake, its poisonous waters disturbed only by the occasional ripple. A succession of stone platforms provided a precarious crossing, and Maddox paused to examine their arrangement.

The deliberate formation bore the unmistakable handiwork of a mage. Someone had already traversed this treacherous stretch, and he had little doubt as to who it might be.

A tremendous crash suddenly echoed from somewhere ahead, followed by a chorus of voices unlike anything belonging to the living. Maddox and Damian hurried toward the disturbance, their weapons ready as the doors to an enormous hall burst open before them.

The spectacle was staggering.

Hundreds of skeletal soldiers crowded the chamber, their corroded armor rattling as they converged upon a raised stone platform. Their hollow voices reverberated beneath the vaulted ceiling, merging into a sinister chant that seemed to permeate the very walls.

"One of us."

"One of us."

"One of us."

At the far end, a skeletal king sat upon an ancient throne, laughing maniacally as his soldiers swarmed around a solitary figure.

Aaron.

The young mage was barely conscious, pinned beneath the grasping hands of the undead. Several rusted blades hovered above him, poised to deliver their final blows.

Damian's expression hardened. Without another moment's hesitation, he brought his sword forward and unleashed a torrent of golden fire across the chamber.

The creatures nearest Aaron vanished beneath the dazzling inferno, their brittle frames splintering under the ferocity of the attack. Bones and fragments of armor scattered across the floor as Maddox charged through the opening, his enchanted axe carving through the remaining soldiers with ruthless efficiency.

He fought his way toward Aaron, striking down anything that attempted to obstruct him. When he finally reached the young mage, he found him lying motionless, his face smeared with blood and his breathing dangerously shallow.

Without wasting another moment, Maddox hoisted Aaron onto his shoulder and carried him behind one of the stone structures the boy had raised during the battle.

"Axis Pathios."

A protective shield materialized around Aaron, enclosing his unconscious body within a sanctuary of magic. Satisfied that the boy was temporarily safe, Maddox turned and rejoined Damian.

Several undead soldiers had already converged upon the young warrior, their rusted weapons raised as they advanced. Damian twirled his flaming sword with characteristic confidence, an almost delighted smile spreading across his face.

"Come on."

The first soldier lunged, only for Damian to sidestep the attack and sever its torso with a sweeping slash. Another approached from his left, but a sharp strike from the pommel of his sword shattered its skull before it could raise its weapon.

A third skeleton barely managed to defend itself before Damian's blade tore through its armor, sending a shower of bones clattering across the floor.

"One of us."

"One of us."

"One of us."

"Keep wishing, you ugly fiends."

Across the hall, Maddox was carving his own path through the horde. Vibrant red flames engulfed the head of his enchanted axe, casting a fierce glow across his imposing figure as he hacked through the approaching soldiers. Every blow carried the weight of years of battle-hardened experience, splintering shields and crushing armor while his adversaries struggled to withstand the relentless assault.

Damian glanced toward his mentor, his grin widening at the sight of those magnificent red flames.

"Now we're talking."

With an effortless leap, he landed atop one of Aaron's elevated stone platforms and began attacking the soldiers gathering beneath it. Fire cascaded from his sword in sweeping arcs, scattering the creatures as they attempted to climb toward him.

"You see that, Uncle Mad?"

Damian flourished his weapon dramatically, evidently pleased with the spectacle he was creating.

"This is how a legendary warrior fights!"

Maddox offered no reply, his attention fixed upon the skeletal king.

Throughout the battle, he had been observing the peculiar relationship between the monarch and its soldiers. Whenever the king raised an arm, the undead responded, their movements governed by an unseen authority.

Their extraordinary regenerative abilities were no coincidence. Regardless of the damage inflicted, the creatures continued reconstructing themselves, suggesting that something beyond their own magic was sustaining them.

"The undead..." Maddox growled, his gaze sharpening as the connection became clear.

Damian cut down another soldier, only to watch its scattered bones crawl back toward one another. His triumphant expression faltered as the creature reassembled itself and staggered upright, apparently no worse for the punishment it had endured.

"Why do they keep coming back?"

"One of us."

"That's unfair."

Maddox tightened his grip upon his axe, having finally identified the source of the army's unnatural resilience.

"Damian."

"A little busy!"

"Distract the undead."

"Why?"

"I need to take that bastard down."

Maddox gestured toward the king with his axe, making his intentions unmistakable. Damian raised his shield just in time to deflect an incoming blade, sparks flying from the collision as he forced the attacker backward.

"Distract... how?"

"Do what you do best."

Damian glanced over his shoulder, momentarily puzzled by the instruction.

"Which is?"

"Show off."

For a moment, Damian simply stared at his mentor. Then understanding dawned, and a wicked grin spread across his face.

"Oh. I can do that."

He sprang from the platform and landed in the middle of the hall, deliberately positioning himself where the greatest number of soldiers could see him. Raising his flaming sword, he bellowed at the surrounding army with all the enthusiasm of a performer stepping onto a grand stage.

"Over here!"

The skeletons turned toward him, drawn to the warrior whose blazing weapon now dominated the center of the battlefield. Damian lunged into their ranks, driving his sword through skulls and scattering bones with every sweeping strike.

He followed with a powerful throw of his shield, sending it spinning through the crowd like a deadly disc. The weapon smashed through several soldiers before curving through the air and returning to his waiting hand.

"Taste my boomerang shield!" he bragged.

The undead converged upon him, abandoning their positions near the throne as Damian welcomed their attention with an almost reckless enthusiasm. His laughter rang through the chamber, accompanied by the clash of steel and the crackling of fire.

Maddox seized the opportunity.

Unlike Damian, he had no intention of prolonging the spectacle. His movements were economical and deliberate, each strike directed toward clearing the shortest possible route to the skeletal monarch.

His axe tore through the soldiers blocking his advance while his shield absorbed the blows that threatened to slow him. Crimson fire trailed behind the enchanted weapon, leaving fragments of smoldering armor scattered across the floor as he steadily closed the distance.

The king's laughter abruptly ceased when it noticed the approaching warrior. Its hollow gaze shifted toward Maddox, and with a sharp movement of its skeletal arm, it summoned additional reinforcements from beneath the ancient stone.

Dozens of soldiers clawed their way out of the floor, joining the ranks already defending the throne. The fallen regenerated with alarming speed, their fractured remains knitting themselves together almost as quickly as Maddox could destroy them.

"One of us."

"One of us."

"One of us."

Maddox pressed forward, refusing to let their swelling numbers halt his advance. Then the stone beneath his feet fractured, and skeletal hands burst through the cracks, seizing his boots and locking themselves around his ankles.

He stumbled as more undead emerged around him, their rusted blades seeking every unguarded opening. Maddox swung his axe downward, crushing the grasping limbs, but fresh hands immediately replaced them.

The king had recognized the threat and was determined to prevent him from reaching the throne.

Suddenly, golden fire erupted across the creatures surrounding Maddox. Damian had broken through the nearby ranks, his sword reducing the soldiers obstructing his mentor's path to scattered, smoldering fragments.

Maddox took advantage of the opening without hesitation. Red flames surged from his weapon, incinerating the remaining hands that clung to his legs, and he wrenched himself free before charging toward the throne.

He was close enough now to discern the intricate fractures running through the king's ancient bones. Behind him, the undead continued their dreadful refrain, but the words had become little more than a distant murmur beneath the tumult of battle.

Maddox planted his feet firmly against the stone and raised his axe, its enchanted blade blazing with incandescent red flames. Every muscle in his body tightened as he drew his arm back, gathering his strength for a single decisive attack.

Then he threw it.

The axe hurtled across the chamber, its fiery trajectory cutting above the surging soldiers as it closed the distance to the throne. It sailed past the final ranks of skeletal warriors, cleared the ancient steps, and struck the king with tremendous force.

The enchanted blade embedded itself deep within the monarch's chest, exactly where its heart had once rested.

Silence descended upon the hall.

The undead froze, their weapons suspended mid-strike as the dreadful chanting faltered. An unnatural stillness swept through the chamber, as though the invisible force commanding the army had been abruptly severed.

"One of us."

"One of—"

Nothing.

The king lowered its hollow gaze toward the axe protruding from its chest. A fracture appeared along one rib, followed by another, until a delicate network of fissures spread throughout its skeletal frame.

The jeweled goblet slipped from its fingers and shattered against the stone steps. Above it, the tarnished crown tilted precariously as the ancient monarch trembled upon its throne.

Maddox ascended the steps and wrapped his hand around the handle of his axe. With one sharp pull, he tore the enchanted weapon free, and the king's remains disintegrated into a cloud of ash, leaving nothing upon the throne but the remnants of a crown and the dust of a reign long forgotten.

For one fleeting moment, the chamber stood perfectly still.

Then a deep rumble rolled through the foundations, and the entire hall began to tremble. Fractures raced across the towering pillars while the magnificent paintings adorning the walls splintered, their depictions of a forgotten civilization disintegrating alongside the ancient masonry.

Chunks of stone broke away from the ceiling, crashing onto the floor with thunderous force. The throne shuddered as the surrounding structure began to collapse, and Maddox realized they had only moments to escape.

"Damian!" he roared.

Damian turned toward him, immediately recognizing the urgency in his voice. Across the chamber, Aaron remained unconscious within the protective barrier, oblivious to the destruction unfolding around him.

Damian sprinted toward the young mage, weaving between fallen stones as the floor began splitting beneath his feet. The magical shield was already fading when he reached Aaron, allowing him to gather the unconscious boy into his arms.

"I've got him."

Another violent tremor coursed through the chamber, sending fragments of stone raining from the ceiling. Damian tightened his hold upon Aaron and rushed toward the passage, narrowly avoiding a collapsing section of masonry as he cleared the doorway.

Maddox lingered at the foot of the throne for one final moment. His gaze returned to the empty seat where the skeletal monarch had ruled over its army of the dead, now surrounded by the crumbling remnants of its forgotten kingdom.

Then he turned and followed the boys.

Behind them, the hall came crashing down.
