Chapter 25:
From NEET to Hero!
Today was the day the illusions were stripped away.
Today, we would finally test exactly what we had built in the dark.
Fighting. Physical, brutal, unadulterated violence. If you had told me a year ago that I would willingly step into a ring to exchange blows with highly trained girls, I would have locked my bedroom door, pulled the blackout curtains tighter, and assumed you were having a psychotic break.
But as I stood in the sterile, brightly lit bathroom of Reina's underground training facility, staring into the fogged-up mirror, the person looking back at me wasn't the rotting, pathetic Hikikomori of the past.
I wiped a layer of condensation off the glass and just stared.
It was a genuine, terrifying miracle.
My shoulders were broader. The sickly, translucent pallor of my skin had been replaced by the healthy, bruised flush of constant cardiovascular strain. The muscles in my arms and core weren't massive—I wasn't a Brute-type like Orime—but they were dense, coiled tight like steel cables beneath the surface. I could actually flex without feeling a phantom cramp in my spine.
I leaned closer to the glass, gripping the edges of the porcelain sink. This body wasn't just for show. It was a vessel. A desperate, frantic attempt to build a container capable of withstanding the apocalyptic backlash of the Golden Veins and the Malice sleeping in my soul.
I was looking fine as shit, sure. But more importantly, I looked like someone who could finally survive his own destiny.
"Alright," I whispered to my reflection, the edgy, dark makeup around my eyes making my golden irises pop with an unnatural intensity. "Let's see how much punishment this new hardware can take."
I threw on the ridiculous, heavy black leather coat and the custom seal-leather boots Reina had forced upon me. I grabbed a protein bar, choking down the chalky chocolate, and pushed through the heavy double doors leading into the main arena.
The air in the gymnasium was thick with the scent of ozone, sweat, and polished canvas. Beneath the glaring industrial floodlights, the girls were already warming up on the elevated sparring ring.
"There you are, Yami." Reina's voice sliced through the hum of the ventilation system. She was leaning against the turnbuckle in her absurdly lethal leather leotard, tapping her shadow whip rhythmically against her thigh.
"Tch. You're late, Yami." Shizue's groan irked me a lot for some reason.
"Oh? Since when did I give you permission to drop the honorifics?" I shot back, adjusting the heavy collar of my coat.
"Shut up, pig! I'll call you whatever the hell I want! Even a completely useless retar—"
Smack.
Shizue's insult was violently cut short as Reina casually backhanded the back of her fiery red head.
"Watch your mouth, Shizue," Reina scolded, her tone deceptively sweet. "You'll get our esteemed author completely canceled before we even reach the tournament arc."
"Ow!? What the hell, Reina-obasan!!" Shizue rubbed her head, her face flushing crimson. "And what the hell is an author!?"
"Don't worry your pretty little head about it. Just sit down on the bench and observe, girl."
Shizue crossed her arms, puffed out her cheeks in a violently cute pout, and collapsed onto the spectator bench with a heavy huff. I couldn't help it. I offered her a sharp, mocking grin. She responded with a glare that could have melted titanium.
Ah, yes. A perfect start to a violent morning.
"Katsumi-chan," Reina called out, her voice dripping with amusement. "Would you do the honors and violently rearrange Yami's face for me?"
Katsumi stepped into the center of the canvas, her bright yellow cape fluttering behind her aggressively colorful sports bra and trunks. "Oh, with absolute pleasure. You didn't even have to ask."
I dropped my heavy coat over the ropes, stepping onto the mat in my white button-up and fitted slacks. I frowned at both of them, rolling my shoulders. "Don't get cocky, wannabe hero. Allow me to play the role of your arch-nemesis, just for today."
Katsumi groaned, rolling her eyes, but I saw the corner of her lips twitch. She dropped into a loose, bouncing stance. "I'll put an end to your evil schemes right here, you massive pervert."
"Why am I automatically the pervert!?"
"You spent the last twenty minutes gawking at me in this outfit!" Katsumi snapped, her face instantly turning the color of a ripe tomato. "I know Reina designed this stupid Starflare costume to be completely shameless, but you didn't have to just... just stare like a hungry dog!"
Shit.
I felt the heat rise in my own cheeks. I couldn't even formulate a lie. I just aggressively looked away, rubbing the back of my neck as I walked toward the center of the ring.
"Nothing to say to defend yourself... huh, perv?" Katsumi seemed immensely, irritatingly pleased by my silence.
Well, she completely got me there. Now I absolutely had to beat her senseless to reclaim whatever shattered dignity I had left.
"Just get in the damn center," I grumbled, raising my fists into a crude, unpolished guard. Her triumphant grin was ticking me off.
Reina and Orime stepped up to the edge of the apron.
"Remember the ground rules," Reina announced, her eyes flashing with anticipation. "This is a sanctioned sparring match. No lethal force, no biting, no gouging, no pulling hair, and absolutely no seducing the opponent."
"What!?" Both Katsumi and I snapped our heads toward Reina, our expressions identical masks of disgust.
"Only I am allowed to seduce Yami~," Reina purred, winking exaggeratedly. "What's with those looks? Why are you staring at me like I'm a hopeless degenerate?"
"Shall we just begin before she says something worse?" I asked Katsumi, my voice deadpan.
"Yeah. Please."
"Hey! Do not ignore your instructor!"
I tuned Reina out. The world shrank down to the twenty-by-twenty canvas beneath my boots. I watched Katsumi. She was constantly in motion, hopping lightly on the balls of her feet, her arms held deceptively low.
Taekwondo.
She was a kicker. A master of distance management and kinetic transfer. If I wasn't careful, she was going to detach my head from my spine.
Just as the thought materialized in my brain, the space between us vanished.
There was no telegraph. No shift in her shoulders. Her left foot simply ceased to be on the floor and reappeared buried violently deep into my ribs.
CRACK.
"Ghhht—!"
All the oxygen violently evacuated my lungs. I didn't even see the strike connect. I stumbled backward, my boots squeaking against the mat, clutching my side as my vision swam with white spots. My diaphragm seized, refusing to draw in air.
Her range was completely absurd. How the hell was I supposed to close the distance against a human sniper rifle?
"Let's go, Katsumi-chan!! Break his ribs!!" Shizue was screaming from the bench, entirely too invested in my physical destruction.
"Sis," Orime murmured, leaning against the ropes. "Is Yami already in trouble?"
"Of course he is," Reina replied, her eyes tracking our every twitch. "I only drilled him in close-quarters grappling and wrestling fundamentals. Katsumi's Taekwondo allows her to completely control the engagement zone. She can push him away effortlessly. She is, objectively, his worst possible matchup."
"Yami always starts at a disadvantage, doesn't he?" Orime noted quietly. "But... he always finds a weird way to fight back."
"You're damn right. He's just like Aimi in that regard." Reina grinned proudly.
I heard them. Despite the ringing in my ears, I heard them. A dark, reckless grin stretched across my face, tasting the metallic tang of blood from where I had bitten my cheek.
If distance was her weapon, I just had to violently remove it.
I dropped my guard completely, lowered my center of gravity, and charged straight at her like a rabid animal.
"You're being way too predictable, Yami!" Katsumi scoffed, pivoting neatly on her heel to sidestep my reckless bull-rush.
But I had anticipated the pivot. As she moved, I abruptly planted my lead foot, violently shifting my momentum, and launched a sweeping kick toward her exposed flank.
Thud.
She didn't even flinch. She simply raised a rigid forearm, blocking my shin with bone-jarring force.
And then I saw it. The slight dip of her hips. The rotation of her shoulders. A spinning back kick, chambered and ready to fire.
I was standing perfectly, disastrously in the kill zone.
BOOM.
The heel of her red boot caught me square in the solar plexus. I was literally lifted off my feet, sent flying backward until my spine slammed against the unforgiving elasticity of the ropes. I collapsed onto my knees, clutching my stomach, a pathetic, wheezing hiss escaping my throat.
Pain tolerance. This is excellent training for pain tolerance, my brain frantically rationalized as my organs screamed in agony.
Before I could recover, the shadow of her cape fell over me. She had closed the distance. I expected another kick, bracing my bruised ribs, but Katsumi fluidly shifted her weight, faked a low sweep, and delivered a devastating, textbook boxing hook directly to my jaw.
My head snapped violently to the side. The taste of copper flooded my mouth.
"Maybe Yami is entirely cooked?" Shizue asked, leaning forward, the vindictive joy replaced by slight concern.
"Cooked," Orime agreed solemnly.
"Knock him out already! Stop playing with your food, Katsumi-chan!"
She knew boxing as well. Of course she did. As I frantically raised my bruised arms to protect my head, she seamlessly transitioned back to her legs, driving a vicious knee directly into my unguarded stomach.
My guard shattered. Her fists became a blur of red leather, clobbering my face, slipping past my clumsy parries with terrifying precision.
Before I could even register the final blow, Katsumi grabbed the collar of my shirt, pivoted her hips, and effortlessly threw my entire body weight over her shoulder. The canvas rushed up to meet me.
SLAM.
The impact rattled the teeth in my skull. I was flat on my back, the breath knocked out of me for the third time in two minutes. Katsumi immediately mounted my chest, pinning my hips down, her fist drawn back, her knuckles trembling with adrenaline.
"Alright," Reina's voice echoed through the fog in my brain. "Katsumi cleanly takes round one."
The words seemed to break the spell. Katsumi blinked, her chest heaving, the combat-high draining from her eyes. She looked down at me, and her expression immediately crumpled into sheer panic.
I was a mess. My lip was split and bleeding sluggishly down my chin. A dark, ugly purple bruise was already blooming across my left cheekbone, and my white shirt was stained with sweat and blood.
"Oh my god... I'm so sorry, Yami," Katsumi stammered, hurriedly scrambling off my chest. "I completely lost myself in the rhythm, I didn't mean to go that hard, I was just—"
She stopped.
She saw my eyes.
I wasn't looking at her with fear. I wasn't glaring at her with anger. My golden eyes were wide, dilated, burning with a frantic, obsessive flame. My brain was a supercomputer operating at maximum capacity. I wasn't just taking a beating; I was recording data. Stride length. Hip rotation. Recovery frames. Tell-tale muscle twitches before a strike.
I was downloading her entire moveset.
"Get up. Return to your corners. Prepare yourselves for round two," Reina instructed, her voice low and dangerous.
"Katsumi-chan really took that personally, didn't she? She absolutely dismantled him..." Shizue whispered, genuinely feeling bad for my battered state.
"To an untrained eye, it certainly appears that way," Reina murmured, her gaze locked onto my bloody grin. "But Yami... Yami is a creature you must never, ever underestimate."
"She literally mopped the canvas with his face, Reina. Be realistic," Orime stated flatly.
"It seems you still have much to learn about our boy, Orime-chan~. Just watch."
I dragged myself up using the ropes, spitting a glob of blood onto the edge of the mat. I wiped the back of my hand across my mouth and locked eyes with Katsumi.
"Don't you dare get tense on me now," I warned, my voice raspy. "Come at me with that exact same rhythm. I want you to fight me like you're trying to kill me."
"But Yami, your face—"
"No buts, you hypocritical, wannabe hero!" I barked, throwing my arms wide, fully embracing the theatrical madness of my outfit. "If you hold back, my dark plans will succeed, and this pathetic world shall be mine!"
Katsumi's eyes widened in shock for a fraction of a second before a fierce, competitive smile broke across her face. "Don't come crying to me when you wake up in the infirmary, villain!"
The bell in my mind rang.
I didn't wait for her to set her distance. I rushed her instantly, keeping my stance terrifyingly low, almost scraping the canvas.
"This reckless garbage again?" Katsumi scoffed.
She sidestepped to her left, exactly as she had in the first round.
Right on schedule.
Instead of trying to kick, I threw my entire body horizontally through the air, launching myself directly into her path like a human missile.
"Waahh!?"
My shoulder slammed violently into her midsection, entirely bypassing her guard. We crashed to the mat in a tangle of limbs. Before she could scramble away, I grabbed her left leg, isolating the joint, and wrenched it backward.
"Arrghh!! Let go, that hurts!" Katsumi yelped, slapping the mat instinctively.
I didn't stop. I forced myself up, hauling her off the floor by her waist. I slipped her head firmly under my left arm, securing the lock. With a guttural roar, I hoisted her entire body weight up, lifting her completely upside down, suspended above my head. I jumped backward, using the apex of the arc to violently drive my shoulders into the mat, slamming her spine into the canvas with crushing force.
A perfect, flawless backdrop suplex.
Katsumi rolled away, clutching her lower back, her eyes wide with absolute disbelief.
"What the actual fuck?" Reina swore loudly from the apron, her smug facade completely shattering. "I never taught him that transition..."
"Oh my god, that looked like it ruptured a disc..." Orime winced, covering her eyes with her hands.
"I am nowhere near done with you~!" I cackled, the adrenaline completely masking the throbbing pain in my ribs.
Katsumi scrambled to her feet, her hero bravado replaced by genuine caution. She raised her guard high, expecting another grapple.
I closed the distance. She panicked, throwing a stiff, defensive jab to keep me away.
Frame advantage.
I caught her wrist out of the air. I extended my left arm like a steel bar and violently yanked her forward, using her own momentum against her. My rigid forearm clotheslined her straight across the collarbone. The impact lifted her feet entirely off the floor. She did a complete, involuntary backflip in mid-air before crashing down onto her shoulders.
While she was gasping for breath, I sprinted toward the nearest turnbuckle. I practically scaled the ropes, balancing precariously on the top pad. Without a second of hesitation, I launched myself into the air, executing a tight forward flip, and brought the full, crushing weight of my body down onto her chest.
BOOM.
The entire ring shuddered.
Shizue's jaw was practically resting on the floor. The untouchable Katsumi was currently being violently dismantled by a NEET.
"I... I don't understand," Reina muttered, genuinely baffled. "Where the hell did he learn the kinesthetics for those aerial grapples?"
"AHHHH!!!" Orime suddenly shrieked, pointing a trembling finger at me. "So that's why he borrowed my gaming console for the last three weeks!! No way!! That is absolutely terrifying!!"
"What? Speak plainly, Orime," Reina commanded.
"He... he's perfectly copying the command grabs from a character in a fighting game!!"
"He is doing what!? That is suicidally dangerous; he lacks the foundational muscle memory, he could snap his own neck!"
"That's... that's the thing," Orime laughed nervously, rubbing the back of her neck. "I might have... aggressively helped him master those inputs... hahaha..."
"HOW!?"
"You see... I play Wrekken competitively. I'm ranked in the global top 500. A few weeks ago, I completely wiped the floor with Yami in a 1v1 set. It triggered his gamer pride. He got obsessively competitive, so he started maining this DLC character who exclusively uses Lucha Libre wrestling. His name is King Rey..."
"I don't care about the game's lore, Orime! How is he doing this in reality!?"
"Yami is a freak, sis," Orime whispered in awe. "He's an incredibly fast visual learner. He didn't just memorize the buttons; he memorized the anatomical weight distribution, the hitboxes, the exact frame data of every single animation. That character has two hundred and thirty unique moves. Yami memorized the physical mechanics of all of them. It only took him three weeks to beat my main..."
"Let me process this," Reina said slowly, rubbing her temples. "Yami aggressively studied the 3D animations of a video game character, mathematically calculated the leverage required to execute them in real gravity, and is now successfully applying them to a live combatant?"
"Yeah. Pretty much."
"That is physically impossible. It shouldn't work. The human brain cannot translate digital frames to physical muscle memory that fast... but..." Reina looked at me, standing over a groaning Katsumi. "...It is Yami."
I grabbed Katsumi's arm, wrapped my legs around her shoulder, and locked in a brutal, inescapable cross-armbreaker.
Katsumi frantically tapped the mat three times.
"Round two goes to Yami!" Reina announced, her voice filled with a new, terrifying level of respect. "Return to your corners. Final round."
I let go of her arm and backed away, my chest heaving like a bellows.
"Damn you, villain..." Katsumi hissed, pushing herself up from the canvas. Her yellow cape was twisted, her hair plastered to her forehead with sweat. "I won't let you plunge this world into darkness... not while I have breath in my lungs..."
She was fully, deeply immersed in the roleplay now. The humiliation of being suplexed by a gamer had broken her psychological restraints.
"It is inevitable!" I roared back, spreading my arms wide. "I will shatter the foundations of society! You will fail, and the masses will weep knowing their golden hero was nothing more than a stepping stone!!"
I was genuinely starting to love this edgy persona.
Katsumi's eyes darkened. Her jaw clenched so hard I heard her teeth grind from five feet away. The air around her seemed to vibrate with sheer, unadulterated physical power.
Ah. I may have pushed the taunting too far.
"I will never yield to you... villain!"
She exploded off the back foot.
Thud.
Thud.
Holy shit. The roleplay was over. She was drastically faster. Her previous strikes had been sparring speed; these were intended to destroy bone.
I barely registered the blur of her leg before a devastating roundhouse kick crashed into my forearms. The sheer kinetic force lifted me off my feet and sent me careening backward into the elastic ropes. The cables dug into my spine and instantly violently slingshotted me right back into her range.
I bounced off the ropes, completely off-balance.
Katsumi pivoted, driving a horrifyingly accurate left hook deep into my liver.
The world went violently, silently white.
My body simply shut down. I fell to my knees, paralyzed, gasping for air that refused to enter my lungs. My nervous system was screaming in pure static.
She wasn't done.
Through the tears blurring my vision, I saw the shadow of her knee rising like a guillotine.
CRACK.
The bone slammed directly into my chin.
"Ghhhht—!"
My brain rattled aggressively inside my skull. The ambient noise of the gym vanished, replaced by a high-pitched, deafening whine. The harsh overhead lights fragmented into blinding, stinging needles in my eyes.
I was concussed. Functionally, I was already dead.
Katsumi, recognizing my defenseless state, unleashed an absolute hurricane of violence. She rained punches down on my torso and guard. Left, right, hook, uppercut. I hunched forward, wrapping my arms tightly around my head, absorbing the punishment. Every single blow felt like being struck by a sledgehammer. My forearms went completely numb. The muscles in my shoulders screamed, on the verge of tearing.
Think. Think, damn it! I can't out-strike her. I need space!
In a desperate, explosive burst of survival instinct, I dropped my guard and violently thrust both palms outward, striking her squarely in the center of her chest plate.
The sudden shove broke her rhythm and pushed her two feet backward.
It was all the space I needed.
I threw myself backward, planting my hands on the canvas, and launched both of my heavy boots into the air. A desperation dropkick. The soles of my boots caught her squarely in the sternum, sending her crashing onto her back.
We both scrambled to our feet simultaneously.
We stood perfectly still in the center of the ring.
My lungs were burning. My vision was swimming. Blood dripped steadily from my nose, staining the crisp white collar of my shirt.
Katsumi was heaving, her colorful hero outfit soaked in sweat. A dark bruise was forming on her cheek where we had clashed earlier.
We stared at each other.
And then, inexplicably, we both started grinning like absolute idiots.
"Alright, Yami," Katsumi panted, wiping a smear of blood from her split lip with the back of her glove. "I'll admit... you've got some serious moves. But don't you dare think you've won this yet."
"I wouldn't dream of it," I replied, rolling my neck until the vertebrae cracked loudly. "This entire thing was just the warm-up."
"A warm-up? You look like you're about to go into cardiac arrest!"
"Says the girl who is actively favoring her left leg."
"I am not limping!" she protested loudly.
"You are completely, undeniably limping."
"Shut up and fight, villain!!"
She surged forward again.
Fast. Unbelievably fast. Her kicks morphed into machine-gun fire. Left high, right low, a spinning crescent to my blind spot. I was purely reacting on instinct, throwing my forearms into the path of destruction, barely managing to deflect the worst of it. One slip, one missed frame, and she would decapitate me.
She threw a blindingly fast spinning hook kick, aiming directly for my temple.
I ducked.
I felt the violent displacement of air as her boot passed a fraction of an inch above my scalp, ruffling my hair.
She didn't lose balance. As her foot touched down, she seamlessly transitioned into a boxing combination. Jab. Cross. Lead hook. Rising knee.
I parried the jab. I slipped the cross.
But my reflexes were degrading. The hook bypassed my guard and clipped the edge of my chin. The rising knee found its home squarely in my battered gut.
I staggered backward, violently gasping for air, tasting bile in the back of my throat.
"Is that all the justice you can muster, hero?" I taunted weakly, spitting blood onto the mat to buy myself two seconds of oxygen.
"Don't you dare get cocky!"
She rushed in to finish the job, launching a devastating high kick aimed at my neck.
But I was waiting for it.
I completely dropped my stance, ducking beneath the arc of her leg. As it passed over my shoulder, I reached up and locked both arms around her calf like a vice.
Gotcha.
I used her own momentum against her, spinning her violently in place. She tried to counter, twisting her torso to throw a desperation elbow at the back of my head.
I ducked the elbow and aggressively swept her remaining leg out from under her.
She hit the canvas with a sickening thud.
"Oof!"
I didn't give her a fraction of a second to recover. I threw myself onto her back, wrapping my legs around her waist and locking my ankles together in a suffocating body triangle.
She exploded into a frenzy, struggling with the terrifying strength of a cornered animal. Her elbows flew wildly backward, trying to break my grip.
Crack.
One of her elbows caught me perfectly on the bruised ribs she had damaged earlier. I hissed in agonizing pain, my vision flashing white, but I clamped my arms tighter around her torso.
"Tap out!" I roared, my voice raw.
"I will never yield!!"
Using sheer, absurd physical strength, she managed to roll her hips, flipping us over. The sudden shift in gravity loosened my grip just enough for her to scramble upward. She spun around, breaking my hold, and immediately rained a heavy right cross down onto my face.
Then another.
And another.
My vision began to fragment into dark, blurry edges. But I absolutely refused to fall. I wasn't going back to being a victim.
I lunged forward, grabbing the fabric of her shoulder, and pulled her violently close. I pulled my head back and drove my skull forward.
Clack!
A brutal, sickening headbutt.
Our foreheads collided with the sound of two billiard balls striking. We both stumbled backward, instantly releasing each other, clutching our heads in mutual agony.
"Ow… what the hell, that actually really hurt…" Katsumi groaned, her eyes crossing slightly.
"I told you… I'm not… an easy boss fight…" I wheezed, struggling to remain standing.
We stood there for a long, agonizing second. Both of us were violently dizzy. Both of us were battered, bruised, and running on empty.
Then, through the pain, we both grinned again.
We began to circle each other slowly. Like exhausted predators waiting for the other to make a fatal mistake.
She twitched her shoulder, throwing a subtle feint.
I didn't bite. I stayed perfectly grounded.
Realizing the trick had failed, she lunged forward with a genuine front kick.
I swatted the kick aside with my forearm and immediately stepped deep into her guard. I snapped a quick, stiff jab directly onto the bridge of her nose.
Her head snapped back. Her eyes watered instantly. She stumbled backward, her balance finally broken.
I didn't hesitate. I dropped low, shooting in for a double-leg takedown. I wrapped my arms around her waist, locking my hands together behind her back, and surged upward with everything I had left in my legs.
I lifted her completely off the canvas.
She kicked wildly, thrashing her arms, desperately trying to break my posture. But my grip was ironclad.
I arched my back and slammed her down onto the mat with apocalyptic force.
BOOM!
The impact shook the entire steel frame of the ring.
"Holy shit!" Shizue screamed, jumping to her feet.
"Did he just… did he actually just suplex Katsumi!?" Orime gasped, her hands flying to her mouth.
Reina simply stood there, a terrifying, beautiful smile spreading across her face. "I told you. Never, ever underestimate him."
Katsumi lay groaning on the mat, staring blankly up at the harsh ceiling lights.
But miraculously, she rolled onto her side and forced herself back up. Her legs were shaking, her posture ruined. She was significantly tougher than I could have ever imagined.
"Is that… is that all the evil… you can muster…?" she panted, raising her heavy fists one last time.
"Not even close."
I rushed in. She met me halfway in the center of the ring.
We completely abandoned technique. We just stood there, toe-to-toe, violently exchanging blows. Punch for punch. Kick for kick. It was a chaotic, exhausting blur of sweat and leather.
I landed a heavy right hook to her jaw. She answered with a brutal knee to my thigh that nearly buckled my leg.
I reached out and grabbed her wrist. She violently twisted her hips, attempting a judo throw. I dug my heels into the canvas, resisting with all my core strength. We locked together, a desperate grapple of pure, grinding attrition.
Her natural physical strength was insane. But I had the mechanical leverage.
I subtly shifted my weight backward, unbalancing her, and swept her lead foot.
She finally fell.
I collapsed down with her, instantly transitioning into full mount. She tried to buck her hips to throw me off, but she was out of energy. I isolated her right arm, stepped my leg over her face, and dropped back, fully extending her limb into a perfect, inescapable armbar.
She groaned in agonizing pain, clenching her hands together to resist the pressure. But her muscles were failing. After ten agonizing seconds of struggling against the inevitable...
Tap. Tap. Tap.
She slapped her free hand frantically against the canvas.
I released the pressure immediately, rolling away.
We both collapsed onto the mat, staring up at the ceiling.
We were completely exhausted. Bruised. Covered in sweat and our own blood.
But I felt incredibly, undeniably alive.
Reina stepped onto the canvas and began clapping, a slow, echoing rhythm.
"The winner of the sparring match… Yami Oshima."
Complete silence swallowed the arena.
And then Shizue absolutely exploded.
"NO FUCKING WAY!! HE ACTUALLY BEAT KATSUMI-CHAN!?"
"Unbelievable…" Orime muttered, staring at me like I had just defied the laws of physics.
"Damn it all…" Katsumi whispered softly, closing her eyes as she lay next to me.
I forced myself into a sitting position, my chest heaving, grinning like an absolute lunatic.
"I told you… I'm the villain… and the villain always wins the first encounter…"
Katsumi laughed weakly, the sound raspy. "Shut up… you giant, ridiculous pervert…"
But when I looked down at her, she was smiling too.
Reina walked over, standing above us like a dark goddess. She reached out with both hands, hauling Katsumi and me to our feet.
"That was an excellent fight, from both of you," Reina said, her voice completely stripped of its usual sarcasm. "Yami, your adaptation speed is terrifying. You've improved exponentially. Katsumi, you allowed your emotions to dictate your pacing. Do not get cocky next time."
"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say…" Katsumi muttered, gently rubbing her hyper-extended elbow.
I stepped away, walking toward the ropes. I looked down at my shaking hands. The knuckles were raw, the skin split and bleeding.
But there was no golden light humming in my veins. There was no dark, suffocating whisper of Malice in the back of my mind.
I had fought a brilliant, powerful martial artist to a complete standstill. And I had won.
I had won without relying on Amai's inherited techniques. I had won without tapping into the catastrophic power that was slowly destroying me.
I wasn't just a pathetic NEET anymore. I wasn't just a traumatized Hikikomori waiting to be consumed by his own magic.
I was becoming something entirely different.
Something incredibly dangerous.
