Chapter 65:
Tales From Lion City
Xaawo smirked at the five people surrounding her. She knew it was seven, but Valerie and Elijah were invisible. No matter. She just had to choose someone to fight in the meantime. But who should that be? Now that the motive for the game was revealed, she had her choice of which remaining player was most likely to join the gods after the game ended, so that seemed like a good starting point. Now, least likely? Ines had a strong power on paper, confirmed by the tree trying to slam down on her to interrupt her thinking process.
But a blood type with a blood deficiency wasn't that good an idea. But killing her pretty much guaranteed Ramon wouldn't work with her, so if she were to go for her, it'd have to look like an accident. Valerie and Elijah were tough, the two most likely to work with her if certain incentives were given, so they're fine for now. Guess that left either the terrified art student or the burnt out teacher.
After diving down to avoid another strike from the tree, she went for Sybil. She quickly turned her legs to that of a leopard, jumping high in the air. She quickly changed her left arm to a gorilla, aiming straight downward to punch Sybil. She was quickly able to coat her body in crystal, but the force of the punch still forced her on the ground, hitting her head against her own jagged crystal.
Xaawo looked up at Blair with a crazed smile on her face. Blair held her knife out in what some could possibly interpret as an act of defense. Elijah stepped in, jumping behind her to infuse her stupid suit with flames. Xaawo actually looked scared for a brief second, quickly elbowing him with the gorilla arm and sending him flying back. She jumped off Sybil's body to check for any damage, before feeling the tree's presence behind her and seeing Tedros setting up in front of her. Valerie was still invisible, so she had to keep that girl in mind. Either left or right, fifty fifty chance. She ran left, jumping slightly to avoid a potential sweep from the trees roots. Elijah leapt out from behind her, and she just brought back the gorilla arm out of what she had to admit was a moment of panic. Now, if this hit Elijah, he'd just die. No way around it. So she had to fake missing the hit. She swung upwards, but it still hit the side of his face. Not a direct hit, but he still went flying onto the ground.
All activity stopped for a brief second. Xaawo avoided the pillar she knew Tedros was making. All eyes were on Elijah, who after a few seconds, groaned and slowly got up, holding the side of his head, turning to Valerie and quickly nodding. Elijah felt the buzz of his phone ring through his body, but it was likely nothing would come from that.
Until he saw Ramon running towards him.
"Ramon, the hell are you doing?!" Tedros screamed out. That was the only thing Elijah could hear while dodging the guys attempts at blows. He had to keep a distance between them, because a single speck of blood on his body and it was over.
Xaawo smiled to herself, turning her legs to a rabbits real quick in order to get behind him. In a flash, she was holding him in place. Tedros dashed past Ramon to land a punch to Xaawo's face. He couldn't use his powers out of fear he'd hit Elijah, so she wrapped a snake arm around him in the hopes it'd choke him out. Went off without a hitch, and he fell to the ground. Probably not dead, but it did send a shock through the group. Tedros didn't seem like much of a fighter, but he was pretty good at planning, if Junichi and Halford's deaths were any indication. So he stays alive for now.
Panic set in from Ines, but Ramon looked at her with a look more akin to exasperation. In his mind, she presented a pretty simple dilemma: kill Elijah or Tedros dies. He swung at Elijah again, and he kept dodging. Elijah didn't see any problem with killing Ramon. But he just needed an opening. A human being surely only has so much blood they can just throw around. He looked for Valerie, who was visible, but standing around not knowing what to do. He ran next to her, and she turned invisible around them. They backed a few paces away to form some kind of plan, and Elijah started thinking.
"Hey, do you know how your powers work?" Elijah asked.
"I turn invisible?" Valerie asked.
"Well yeah, but like, how? Because if I use fire as a kind of element, maybe you actually have light powers?"
"Light powers?" Valerie asked.
"I mean, things turn invisible if enough light hits them, right? It's called refraction or something. So maybe you can…redirect the light to Ramon and give me an in?"
Valerie tried doing whatever Elijah asked of her. She stretched her arms out to try and…feel the air around her, to sync up with the field around her. Was that what she was doing?
But it seemed to work. The field approached her, and it was a thing she could touch now. It felt thin, almost plastic-like. She held it in her hands, and it went from a field to a bright light in her hands. And as soon as she saw Ramon, she threw it forwards.
The light didn't do any actual damage to him, but it left him in pain. He tried running through the blinding light, but Elijah ducked underneath and grabbed one leg of his worn out trousers. And that was all he needed.
The fire erupted, and he quickly stopped and looked around for something that could put him out. The tree Ines made quickly looked at him in a state of both panic and anger as it approached him.
"What are you doing, man?" The tree yelled, trying to pat him down by hitting him with a branch. The fires were out, but so was Ramon. Elijah stood up, trying to collect himself for a brief second, only for the tree to hit him unconscious. The tree looked at Valerie with a look of murder on it's wooden face, and she backed away while turning invisible.
Xaawo briefly admired her handiwork. Tedros was trying to stay cool while protecting Ines. Valerie seemed to have quit. Elijah and Ramon were alive, barely. That left Blair and Sybil, because god forbid they actually do anything in this game.
She approached them, casually walking towards them with her hands behind her back. Sybil hardened the crystals around her, and Blair stood behind her, inky knife in hand. The tree tried taking her from behind with a sweep of the roots, but she made one arm into a gorillas again, punching straight through it. She wasn't sure if a tree had any internal organs to target, so she went with what she assumed would be the heart. Seemed to work, and the tree let out one more anguished scream before falling down. She turned back to the two girls, leaping forwards and landing another gorilla punch into Sybil. She fell down, and Blair tried lifting her up, but the crystals were obviously too heavy. Sybil tried focusing on getting them off her body, and Blair finally lifted her up. Sybil's phone buzzed to tell her she was the target, but surely that wouldn't matter.
Until she felt a pain in her midsection.
Xaawo hadn't moved. She wasn't transformed. She turned back to Blair, who's knife was covered in red. She herself was on the verge of sobbing.
"I need to survive." She managed to choke out.
Sybil tried lifting a hand, but Blair stabbed through that too. She pushed her down, and a few stabs in the neck later, she was done. She was paler than usual, looking on the verge of either crying or vomiting. Perhaps both.
"And Blair took out Sybil, securing her the win!" Xaawo yelled.
The remaining players looked to her, and Blair felt their disgusted looks burn through her.
"And she did it while Sybil was the target, securing her a bonus prize! Anyway, I'll have that sent to you later, look forward to it!"
Xaawo happily walked off, and Blair ran away before anyone could say anything to her. She just needed to plan her next move.
