Chapter 1:

Chapter 1: Before the Waking (01)

Convergence

The damp, ancient canopy of the primeval forest blotted out all daylight, leaving only twisted shadows and rotting vines.

A shadow darted through the dense foliage at terrifying speed.

It was Akiro.

He wore crude, battle-worn iron armor that rattled softly against his chest with every leap.

A faint, crimson aura hummed along the length of his longsword—a dim, unstable magic that pulsed in rhythm with his rapid heartbeat.

Ahead of him, the brush exploded in a flurry of crushed leaves and snapping branches.

A hulking beast, shaped like a massive, armored hippopotamus with thick, leathery hide, surged forward in a desperate bid to escape. Despite its monstrous weight, the creature tore through the thicket with frightening agility.

Akiro kicked off the root of a gnarled oak, airborne for a fraction of a second before landing lightly on a high branch. He sprang again, leaping from trunk to trunk like a phantom.

The beast veered left, its breath ragged, its body already covered in ancient, jagged scars that leaked dark, oozing blood.

Akiro did not hesitate. He pushed off a final branch, diving straight down from the canopy.

With a low surge of magic flowing into his blade, he brought the sword down in a single, fluid arc.

Slice.

The momentum carried Akiro to a crouch on the mossy ground. Behind him, the massive beast collapsed into the dirt with a heavy thud, its severed head rolling into the weeds.

Akiro stood up slowly, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his gauntlet. He looked down at the steaming carcass, his chest heaving as the dim glow around his sword faded back into dull steel.

Snap.

A heavy twig crushed behind him.

Akiro spun around, gripping his hilt, his eyes widening.

Emerging from the fog was a towering, chitinous monster—over ten feet tall, resembling a hideous fusion of a scaled lizard and an overgrown cockroach. It hissed, raising a massive, spiked leg to impale Akiro where he stood.

Akiro shifted his stance, raising his blade to block the lethal blow—

Fshhhhh!

A violent gale of compressed wind roared out from the treeline, slamming directly into the towering beast. The impact sent the ten-foot monster crashing sideways, snapping saplings as it tumbled helplessly through the dirt.

A young man stepped out from the shadows, lowering a glowing wooden staff.

"Are you alright?" asked Hirano Yuto, catching his breath as he jogged over.

Akiro let out a slow exhale and lowered his weapon. "Yeah. I'm fine." He gestured toward the decapitated beast on the ground. "Look. At least we got a good hunt today."

Yuto offered a faint, tired smile. "Small victories."

Night fell over the dense woods.

A makeshift camp sat tucked between two giant roots, consisting of ragged, threadbare tents patched with animal hides. In the center, a small campfire crackled softly, fighting against the biting chill of the air.

Half of the massive hippo-like creature lay butchered nearby, while generous cuts of its meat roasted over the open flames, dripping fat into the embers.

Akiro tore into a charred piece of meat, chewing slowly as he stared into the fire.

"Hey," Akiro spoke up, his voice barely above a whisper. "Does any of this ever end?"

Yuto sat across from him, sharpening a hunting knife against a whetstone. He stopped, looking up with dark, weary eyes.

"Ever since I came to my senses... ever since I grew up... I’ve only known this world as a graveyard," Yuto said quietly. "I don't think anyone like us can change it. No matter how many battles we fight... we never really win."

Silence settled over the camp, heavy and suffocating.

Suddenly, the ground began to tremble.

The roasted meat rattled on its wooden spit.

Loose pebbles danced across the dirt.

Akiro and Yuto instantly scrambled to their feet, drawing their weapons as they turned toward the dark treeline behind their tent.

The trees parted. A creature bigger than anything they had ever encountered stepped into the clearing. It resembled an ancient rhinoceros, but its body was towering, scaled, and covered in deep, glowing battle scars.

Akiro’s breath hitched in his throat. "I've never seen a beast this huge..." he muttered, his knuckles turning white on his hilt. "Can they even grow to this size?"

Before his friend could answer, the giant rhinoceros raised one colossal foreleg and slammed it onto the earth.

BOOM!

A massive shockwave erupted from the point of impact. The ground buckled like water, throwing Akiro and Yuto high into the air as the world dissolved into blinding dust—

Akiro gasped, shooting upright in his bed.

His heart hammered violently against his ribs. Sweat slicked his hair to his forehead, and his thick winter blankets were tangled tightly around his legs.

He sat there in the quiet morning light of his small bedroom, breathing heavily as he rubbed his throbbing temples. He caught his reflection in the dark glass of his bedroom window, where a thin layer of winter frost had gathered at the corners. He had the exact same face as the warrior in his dreams—the same sharp jawline and striking features—but this Akiro was paler, his frame leaner and untested by war, his messy dark hair sticking up in every direction.

"These dreams..." Akiro muttered to himself, pressing his palm flat against his forehead to suppress a sharp, pulsing headache. "They're getting worse every single day." He shook his head, wincing at the dizzy spell that followed. I really need to book a doctor's appointment...

"Akiro! Breakfast is ready!" His mother's voice echoed from the kitchen outside his bedroom door. Akiro swallowed the lump in his throat and raised his voice. "Yeah! I'm up, Mom! Coming!"

He swung his legs out of bed, shivering slightly as his bare feet hit the cold floor. He quickly threw on his heavy winter school uniform and stepped out into the hallway.

In the dining room, his mother was hurriedly packing her office bag at the table, sliding her laptop and several Manila folders into her leather tote. She wore a sharp business suit beneath a heavy wool overcoat, her hair tied back neatly.

"I have a late meeting today, so I won't be back until evening," she said without looking up, zipping her bag shut. "Make sure you cook something or heat up the leftovers for dinner, okay?"

"Got it. Don't worry about me," Akiro replied, grabbing a warm piece of toast from the table.

She stepped over, kissed him lightly on the forehead, and offered a gentle smile. "Have a good day at school." With that, she grabbed her keys, stepped out of the apartment, and clicked the front door shut behind her.

The morning air was freezing, Akiro’s breath pluming into white mist as he walked down the sidewalk toward the local high school.

Hands shoved deep into his blazer pockets, he kept his eyes fixed on the frosty pavement.

As he approached the iron gates of the school, a familiar silhouette caught his eye.

Walking just a few paces ahead of him was Ayane. She was undeniably beautiful, moving with an effortless, quiet grace. Her medium-length black hair swayed gently over the collar of her winter coat, and soft, dark bangs rested perfectly across her forehead.

Akiro froze in his tracks for a second, his breath catching in his chest. He watched her walk through the gates, his chest tightening with a subtle, unuttered feeling he had harbored for months.

He didn't approach her. He just watched until she disappeared into the main building before taking a slow breath and following behind.

Inside the classroom, the morning bell rang, though the central heating did little to thaw the chill from the windows.

Akiro sat quietly in his assigned desk in the very last row by the glass. Up in the front row, right near the podium, sat Ayane.

The homeroom teacher stepped up to the podium, tapping a stack of graded paper tests against the wooden surface. "Alright, settle down everyone," the teacher announced, glancing over the top of her glasses. "I have the results for your midterm exams. I'm pleased to say we had some impressive scores this time. In fact, our top scorer in the entire class was... Sashihara Akiro."

A collective murmur broke out across the room. Akiro blinked, looking up from his desk in mild surprise.

In the front row, Ayane turned her head back. Her eyes locked onto Akiro, a brief, unmistakable shadow of jealousy and sharp rivalry flashing across her stunning features before she quickly turned back around.

The teacher walked down the aisle, placing the test paper face-down on Akiro's desk. "Excellent work, Akiro. A near-perfect score."

"Thank you, Sensei," Akiro mumbled.

The teacher then walked over to the front row, dropping another paper onto Ayane's desk. "You did great as well, Ayane, but it looks like Akiro took first place this time. You got second."

Ayane stared down at her paper. Her jaw tightened slightly, and she bit her lower lip in quiet frustration.

The bell rang, signaling the start of the morning break period. The classroom dissolved into a casual hum of overlapping conversations. Some students wandered out into the halls, while others stood in small groups stretching their legs.

Akiro remained in his seat in the last row, resting his chin on his palm. He stared out the glass window beside his desk, watching the winter wind rustle the bare branches in the first-floor courtyard.

Smack.

Two hands planted firmly onto the surface of his desk.

"Akiro!"

Akiro jolted, ripping his gaze away from the window. His heart skipped a beat as he looked up.

Ayane was leaning directly over his desk. Her face was dangerously close to his, her dark bangs casting a soft shadow over her eyes.

Completely stunned by her proximity and her sudden, sharp tone, Akiro froze. His mouth parted slightly in a dumbfounded gap, unable to form a single word.

For a second, her expression was fierce. Then, her features softened, breaking into a light, teasing smile.

"It looks like you worked extra hard this time," Ayane said. Her smile faded into something more serious as she suddenly pointed a finger directly at his chest. "But next time, you won't be able to do this to me."

Akiro remained paralyzed, his mouth still hanging open slightly.

Ayane dropped her hand and turned to leave. She took one step away, paused, and glanced back over her shoulder. "Nice haircut, by the way," she noted softly, offering one last, fleeting smile.

Before Akiro could even process the compliment, she spun around and walked quickly away.

Akiro sat perfectly still. Slowly, a warm blush crept up his face, and a small, helpless smile tugged at the corners of his mouth.

A few rows away stood Kaname. He was a heavily built, slightly chubby boy with a thick, fleshy face, towering over the two remarkably skinny, scrawny lackeys standing beside him.

Kaname was leaning heavily against a desk, his jaw clenched tight and his eyes fixed in a dark, jealous glare as he watched Akiro and Ayane smiling at each other.

When the final bell rang and classes ended for the day, the room emptied out quickly.

Akiro gathered his notebooks, slinging his bag over his shoulder. Just as he stepped near the rear exit door, a heavy hand grabbed him by the collar of his winter uniform and slammed him violently against the hallway wall.

THUD.

Akiro winced, bumping his head against the plaster.

Standing over him was Kaname, his round, fleshy face twisted into a scowl.

"Think you're hot stuff now, huh?" Kaname growled, tightening his grip on Akiro's shirt collar. "Getting first place in class... don't let it go to your head, Akiro. And another thing—stay away from Ayane. Don't you dare try talking to her just because you think you're smart now."

Akiro shrank back slightly, keeping his eyes lowered, offering no resistance. "I... I wasn't going to..."

"Hey! What are you doing?"

A sharp voice interrupted them.

Ayane was leaning out from the classroom doorway just a few feet away, her eyes narrowed as she looked at Kaname holding Akiro against the wall.

Kaname froze. He immediately let go of Akiro's shirt, smoothing down his own sleeves with an awkward, forced grin.

"Oh! Ayane! Nothing, nothing at all!" Kaname laughed loudly, clapping a heavy, meaty hand onto Akiro's shoulder. "We were just talking! Since my buddy Akiro here got first place, I was just telling him he owes us all a treat to celebrate! Right, Akiro?"

Ayane glanced at Akiro, her expression unreadable.

Akiro simply adjusted his collar, keeping his face entirely neutral, saying nothing.

After a tense silence, Ayane turned without another word and walked away down the corridor. Kaname glared at Akiro one last time, muttered a threat under his breath, and took off after her.

Akiro stood alone in the quiet hallway, leaning against the cold plaster wall as the winter afternoon faded around him.
