Chapter 4:
The Corvus Catalyst
The heavy iron door of Elias’s subterranean sanctuary sealed shut with a hollow, echoing thud. He threw the sequence of locking deadbolts, his hands trembling slightly, not from fear, but from the sheer exhaustion radiating from his depleted mana core. He bypassed the workbench entirely and dropped to his knees before the massive, iron-bound chest in the center of the room.
From his innermost pocket, he withdrew the pouch Valera had given him. He carefully tipped the vial of Celestial Solvent into his palm. The liquid was thick, swirling with an incandescent, pearlescent light that seemed to actively push back the shadows of the damp workshop. It was pure, unadulterated mana, distilled by the Highborne Academy’s grand alchemists.
"Let’s see what you died for, old man," Elias muttered, his voice hoarse.
He unstoppered the vial and carefully poured a single, glowing drop onto the primary runic dial of the chest. The reaction was instantaneous. The solvent hissed, eating through the complex warding spells like acid through parchment. The heavy iron dials began to spin on their own, clicking into place with a series of sharp, violent snaps.
Clack. Clack. Clack.
The final lock disengaged, and the heavy lid hissed open, releasing a breath of freezing, ancient air.
Elias leaned over, the ambient glow of the solvent illuminating the interior. There was no gold, no legendary weapons. Resting on a bed of crushed black velvet was a single, pulsating core. But it wasn't the jagged, elemental crystal of a beast or a bound spirit. It was organic, shaped like a human heart, carved entirely from crystallized, dark-crimson blood. It beat with a slow, hypnotic rhythm, radiating a suffocating aura of raw, ancient power.
Next to it was a crumbling leather journal. Elias picked it up, recognizing his father’s erratic, sharp handwriting on the first page.
If you are reading this, Elias, the Enforcers have taken me. The Academy calls our work heretical, but they are just terrified. The Vane bloodline does not borrow power from the Architect’s System like the Spire nobles do. We synthesize it. We consume it. Inside this chest is the Sanguine Core, the culmination of our family’s true alchemical heritage. It requires a blood-tether to bind. Do not use a standard extraction card. You must overwrite the System.
Elias set the journal down, his heart hammering against his ribs. The Vane bloodline. He had always known his family was different, ostracized even down in the Undercity, but he hadn't fully understood why. The upper tiers, the House of Vance, the Enforcers—they hadn't just imprisoned his father for illegal brewing. They were trying to eradicate an ancient rival lineage that threatened their monopoly on magic.
He didn't hesitate. He drew a blank star-iron card from his deck-box and laid it flat on the velvet next to the crimson heart. He took his obsidian knife and dragged the blade across his palm. He clenched his fist, letting his blood drip continuously over the blank metal and the crystallized core.
"Bind," Elias commanded, pouring every last drop of his remaining willpower and fractured mana into the tether.
The workshop erupted in a violent flash of crimson light. The Architect’s System immediately detected the anomaly, projecting massive, glaring red warnings across his vision.
[CRITICAL WARNING: Unauthorized Biological Integration Detected.] [Error: Bloodline Resonance Exceeds Standard Parameters.] [Attempting System Purge...]
Elias screamed through gritted teeth as the energy from the Sanguine Core violently surged up his arm, burning through his veins like liquid fire. The System was trying to reject the core, treating it as a corruption. But the ancient alchemy of the Vane bloodline was older and vastly more stubborn than the digitized magic of the Architect.
[Purge Failed. System Override Initiated.] [User Bloodline Awakened: Sanguine Heir.] [Integration Complete. New Mythic Card Forged.]
Elias collapsed onto the stone floor, gasping for air as the red warning screens shattered into digital dust. The agonizing heat in his veins slowly receded, replaced by a terrifying, boundless reservoir of cold, dark energy. He pushed himself up, wiping the sweat from his brow, and looked into the chest.
The Sanguine Core was gone. In its place rested a card unlike any he had ever seen. It wasn't forged from standard star-iron, but from a dark, glassy crimson material that felt warm to the touch. The runework on its surface seemed to flow like liquid.
[Card Acquired: Sanguine Sovereign] [Type: Bloodline/Domain] [Cost: 0 Mana. Requires 20% Vitality Sacrifice.] [Effect: Casts a localized territorial domain (20-meter radius). Within this domain, all opponent mana regeneration is halted, and 50% of all damage dealt to opponents is returned to the user as pure Vitality and Mana. Suppresses all cards below 'Epic' rarity.]
Elias stared at the text, the sheer magnitude of the card settling over him. It was a domain expansion—a legendary class of magic supposedly restricted entirely to the Grand Masters of the Guilds. It didn't just manipulate the rules of the arena; it overwrote them entirely. It was a weapon of absolute dominance.
He slotted the crimson card into his deck-box. The tournament wasn't just about survival anymore. It was an execution.
Two hours later, Elias walked back into the roaring, smog-choked cauldron of the Grinder. The semi-finals were underway. The crowd’s frenzy had reached a fever pitch, their cheers vibrating through the concrete floor.
[Semi-Final Match: Contestant 404 vs. Contestant 12. Report to Arena Pit 1.]
Pit 1 was the main stage, an expansive, flat coliseum floor bathed in harsh spotlights. Standing in the center was Contestant 12, a notorious Mid-Tier mercenary known as 'The Ironclad'. He was heavily armored in thick, bulky power-plates and wielded a massive, two-handed kinetic hammer.
Elias stepped onto the sand, his posture entirely changed. The desperate, calculating tension of a scavenger was gone. He moved with the predatory, silent grace of a hunter who knew he stood at the top of the food chain.
High above, in the VIP viewing gallery, Valera leaned forward against the glass, her pale violet eyes locked onto Elias.
[Match Begin!]
The Ironclad roared, instantly activating his defensive buffs. Three overlapping hexagonal shields flared to life around him. He hoisted his kinetic hammer and charged, the ground shaking with every heavy step.
Elias didn't draw Shadow Step. He didn't summon an Ash-Sprite for a distraction. He stood perfectly still, letting the massive mercenary cross half the arena.
Then, Elias slapped the dark crimson card onto his wrist-projector.
[User plays: Sanguine Sovereign. Cost: 20% Vitality.]
Elias felt a sharp, internal tearing sensation as a fifth of his life force was violently ripped away to fuel the card. But the payoff was instantaneous.
A shockwave of deep, blood-red energy exploded from Elias’s position, expanding rapidly outward to cover the entire arena floor. The air instantly grew heavy, tasting of iron and ancient night. The bright arena spotlights flickered and dimmed, overpowered by the suffocating darkness of the domain.
The Ironclad skidded to a halt, looking around in confusion. The three overlapping energy shields surrounding him suddenly flickered, let out a high-pitched whine, and shattered into useless sparks.
[System Error: Opponent Shields Suppressed by Domain Dominance.]
"What did you do?!" the mercenary bellowed, trying to channel mana into his kinetic hammer. The weapon remained dead and heavy in his hands. His mana pool was completely locked.
Elias drew his obsidian knife, his eyes glowing with a faint, predatory crimson light through the lenses of his mask. "I changed the rules."
He activated Shadow Step, bypassing the space between them in an instant. He materialized directly in front of the massive mercenary, entirely unfazed by the size difference. With brutal, clinical precision, Elias drove the obsidian blade through the gaps in the man's heavy armor—once in the shoulder joint, once in the thigh, and a final, shallow cut across the jawline.
With every strike, the Sanguine Sovereign domain flared. The blood drawn from the mercenary didn't just hit the sand; it vaporized into red mist and rushed directly into Elias, restoring his sacrificed vitality and supercharging his mana core.
The Ironclad collapsed onto his back, his armor useless, his strength completely drained by the vampiric pull of the domain. He stared up at Elias in utter terror.
[Contestant 12 incapacitated. Winner: Contestant 404!]
The crowd, normally bloodthirsty and loud, was stunned into absolute silence. They had never seen magic like this in the Mid-Tiers. It was dark, visceral, and overwhelmingly powerful.
Elias dismissed the domain, the red mist fading away to leave the bright, harsh lights of the arena. He sheathed his knife and looked directly up at the VIP box.
Valera was no longer leaning casually against the glass. She was standing perfectly rigid, her hands pressed against the pane, her expression a mix of absolute shock and sudden, dangerous realization. She recognized the magic. She recognized the bloodline.
Elias pointed directly at her, his message clear. He was coming for the Spire. And he was coming for her.
