Chapter 51:
Naruto: Shadow Clone System
Mission update is live.
Get comfortable. The village is watching.

Naruto had reserved an empty corner of Training Ground Three before anybody told him to stay out of it.
The reservation was a chalk mark on the board by the gate, not an order. It had seemed like a small enough rebellion: one hour alone, no sparring, maybe a few shadow clones to find out whether his head would punish him for them. He had written his name the night Team Seven came home, after the report and the hospital and two witness signatures that still did not say the same thing.
In the morning, the gate was farther away than the hospital.
Kakashi's rest order sat folded in Naruto's pocket. The medic had asked him to return if the headache changed. Naruto had decided it had not changed enough to count. By the time he reached the examination room, he had rehearsed that sentence so often it sounded suspicious even to him.
The woman who had unwrapped his forearm the evening before glanced at the wall clock. "Nine twelve. Sit down."
"You keep office hours for headaches?"
"For people who say they don't have one and come back anyway."
He sat. The white wall behind her made the room feel brighter than it was. His forearm dressing pulled when he gripped the edge of the chair, so he let go and folded his hands in his lap.
She opened his chart to yesterday's note. He could see the words pressure and headache from where he sat. Nothing else was legible, which was probably for the best.
"Current pain," she said. "Zero to ten."
"Three."
She did not write it. "Now, or when you decided to come in?"
"Now."
"And at its worst since I saw you?"
Naruto looked at the eye chart behind her instead of answering. The smallest row dissolved into black dots at this distance. Yesterday he had stood in front of Hiruzen and told him there were things he could not prove. That had felt safer than giving this woman a number she could use.
"Maybe five," he said.
The medic set her pencil across the open page. "You can have a headache and still be a reliable witness. I'm asking about your body, not your account of Wave."
He looked back at her. "Those files don't meet?"
"Your mission report can tell me what techniques you used. It cannot tell me what it feels like behind your eyes this morning."
Outside the half-open door, a cart rattled over a seam in the hall floor. Naruto waited for the sound to pass. The headache throbbed once in time with it.
"Eight," he said.
The pencil stayed where it was.
"At six twenty. I woke up because it was that bad. It's four now, not three. I thought if I said eight, you'd send me home before I got to explain that I can still see."
"I may send you home," she said. "But not before I examine you."
She wrote the two times and numbers separately, then turned the chart so he could see them: peak 8/10 at 06:20 by patient report; current 4/10 at 09:12. No word in the margin called him brave or dangerous. For a moment he wanted to make a joke about the handwriting. He couldn't find one that would make the numbers less his.
"Any lost time since we spoke?"
"No."
"Vomiting? New weakness? Seeing two of me?"
"No. One of you is doing enough."
She made one small mark. "Tell me if any answer changes. Don't decide it isn't worth my time."
Naruto had heard adults say that while meaning the opposite. She moved the lamp instead of adding another speech. She asked him to cover one eye and read down the chart. He made it through the large letters fast, slowed on the next row and guessed one shape wrong. With the other eye he reached the same row and made the same mistake.
"Again," she said.
"You'll know I memorized it."
"I changed the card."
She had. He laughed once, more annoyed at himself than at her, and read the new row. The letters stayed single. He could follow her fingertip from side to side without losing it, though the light and the movement made the ache sharpen above his nose.
"It hurts when I track your hand," he said before he could take the words back.
"How much?"
"Five now."
She wrote 09:18 beside the change. Then she lowered the lamp and waited. Naruto watched the minute hand work its way to the next mark. The pain fell back toward four, not all the way down. She did not call the chart normal and send him away. She did not call the headache a secret she could solve with a pen.
"The letters are clear," she said. "That tells me you read the card. It does not tell me what a clone returning to you would do."
"I haven't made any since the road back."
"I'm recording that too. No clone now to demonstrate a point."
He had been about to ask.
She checked the forearm dressing, asked him to stand and walk a few steps, and let him sit again when the ache sharpened under the ceiling light. He kept his balance. He wanted credit for that. She wrote down the increase in pain instead.
"You can go home on your own," she said. "Slowly. Eat. Drink. Rest. No shadow clones, no chakra drills, no sparring until I reassess you tomorrow afternoon."
"Tomorrow afternoon? Kakashi said one day."
"One day of medical rest is not a certificate for whatever you decide to do afterward. You can talk with your team tomorrow. If anyone asks you to use a technique before I reassess you, they can call me."
Naruto looked toward the window. The angle of the sunlight was almost right for his reserved hour. There would be nobody at the ground yet. He could have gone there first and made a clone before the headache had time to vote.
"I wrote my name on the board," he said.
"Then take it off."
"Someone else will get the slot."
"Yes."
That was a terrible way to win an argument. She had not even offered him a heroic reason to lose.
"What if I feel fine by dinner?"
"Tell me tomorrow afternoon. Feeling better is information. It isn't today's examination."
She tore a narrow duplicate from the chart and wrote the appointment time on it. The clinical page held the pain scores, the vision check, the brief increase with tracking, his answers and the restriction. The duplicate held only what he needed to remember. Neither page tried to summarize the witness sheets he had signed at the mission office the night before.
"Are you putting the other question in there?" he asked.
"Which one?"
"The one about voices."
Her expression changed only enough to show she remembered asking. "I recorded what you said yesterday as uncertain. Today you answered the symptom questions I asked. I'm not assigning a cause to this headache from either conversation."
He did not thank her. He trusted the limit more because she had not asked for gratitude.
At the desk, he read the duplicate again: return tomorrow, 14:00; no techniques before reassessment. His name looked ordinary at the top. That almost hurt more than the number eight.
The walk to Training Ground Three took him past the hospital wall and through a street that smelled of fresh rice. He could have gone home by a shorter route. He took this one because the chalk mark was his to erase, and because he wanted to know whether he could do that without pretending the medic had ordered him into it.
The board held his name under the midday hour. He rubbed it out with two fingers. A pair of academy trainees waiting near the gate looked at the empty space.
"You done with it?" one asked.
"Today," Naruto said.
The trainee wrote her own name in the slot before Naruto could change his mind. She did not know what she had taken from him, or what he had kept. He watched her finish the last letter and went back down the path.
Sakura would probably ask if he had eaten. Sasuke would call this a defeat if he thought it would make Naruto argue. Kakashi would pretend not to know which of them had sent Naruto to the clinic and then know exactly what the medic's note said. Naruto was not ready for any of them. He was ready for rice, water and a room with the curtains pulled halfway closed.
The headache stayed with him. So did the appointment slip. He had lost an hour on the ground and a day of techniques, not the right to tell them what he had seen in Wave. When the team met again, his witness signature would still be his, and the medical number would still be eight. Neither could do the other's job.
