Chapter 24:

The Road Ahead

The Veil-Etched Hourglass: Kith and Kin.

Maddox had returned.

By the time Aaron and Damian entered the cottage, he was already standing beside the dining table with Cedric and Elowen. The three adults appeared to have been discussing something important, but their conversation came to an abrupt halt as the boys stepped inside.

Nilly was there too, with Frey hopping excitedly around her. The tiny red bird fluttered from one shoulder to the other, occasionally settling in her hair before taking flight again.

"Calm down," Nilly whispered, gently stroking her companion.

Damian barely noticed. The moment he spotted Maddox, his face lit up.

"Uncle Mad, you're back!"

Without a second thought, he hurried across the room and wrapped his arms around the old warrior.

Maddox stood still for a brief moment, seemingly taken aback by the enthusiastic welcome. Then a faint smile spread across his face, and he returned the hug with a reassuring pat on Damian's back.

"I told you I would be," he said.

Aaron approached more quietly, stopping a respectful distance away before giving Maddox a nod.

"Welcome back, sir."

"Good to see you too, Aaron," Maddox replied with a small smile.

Once everyone had settled into their chairs, the adults exchanged knowing glances. Cedric looked toward Elowen, who gave him a small nod, while Maddox leaned back in his seat.

Whatever they had discussed before the children's arrival, the decision had already been made.

Cedric turned toward Aaron and Nilly.

"We have decided to send you both to the academy," Cedric announced.

Aaron's eyes widened.

An academy! The possibilities unfolded in his mind almost immediately, each more exciting than the last.

Which academy? What courses do they offer? Are there electives? When do we leave?

And most importantly, would he finally have the opportunity to study advanced ice magic? Barrier magic? Perhaps even fire or lightning?

He had spent years learning beneath his mother's guidance, surrounded by the books and knowledge available at the cottage. The thought of studying somewhere entirely new, among teachers with different areas of expertise, was almost too much to comprehend.

Yet despite the questions racing through his mind, Aaron remained completely silent.

Beside him, Nilly was considerably less restrained.

"An academy? Ahh...finally! I thought I was going to grow old in here!"

She practically bounced in her chair, her excitement gathering momentum with every passing second.

"I mean, Mom's a great teacher and all, don't get me wrong, but imagine having other teachers! And other students! I could make so many friends! We could learn together, explore together, have fun together! And the food! Imagine all the different kinds of food they must have! I want to try everything! Oh, and do you think there's a town nearby? There must be, right? We could go shopping, visit all sorts of places, meet new people, and maybe they have bakeries too! I wonder if—"

Words poured out of her so quickly that Damian lost track somewhere between the teachers and the food. Maddox raised an eyebrow, while Cedric stared at his daughter, struggling to keep up with her rapidly expanding plans.

Only Aaron appeared to understand every word. Years of listening to Nilly's breathless ramblings had made him remarkably skilled at following her train of thought, even when it seemed to change direction several times within a single sentence.

Elowen finally raised a hand.

"Slow down, Eleanor. Breathe."

Nilly stopped mid-sentence and drew a long breath, only then noticing that everyone around the table was staring at her.

Frey chirped excitedly from her shoulder, apparently sharing every bit of her enthusiasm.

While everyone was still recovering from Nilly's breathless outburst, Damian sat unusually quiet. The prospect of attending an academy hadn't excited him nearly as much as it had the others. There was something else on his mind.

"Uncle Mad…" he said quietly. "I thought we were supposed to stay together."

The room fell silent.

"You were supposed to train me," Damian continued, struggling to hide the disappointment in his voice. "I left my kingdom… my home… because I thought we were going to travel together."

Maddox studied him for a moment before smiling.

"I have been accepted as an instructor at Verenholt Academy of Arcane Arts, Damian."

Damian blinked, his expression caught somewhere between confusion and relief.

"You really thought I was getting rid of you?"

"If you still want to continue your training with me, you're welcome to come along. The choice is yours."

The tension in Damian's shoulders eased, but another concern quickly took its place.

"My parents…"

His expression tightened.

"When did you contact them?" he asked quickly. "Are they safe?"

Maddox nodded calmly.

"I have friends who keep me informed about their current whereabouts. You don't need to worry about them. I can assure you, they are safe."

Damian released the breath he had been holding.

"I also spoke with Stefan and Gemma," Maddox continued. "They know about the academy, and they couldn't have been more proud."

Damian's smile returned, brighter than before.

"Then I'm coming with you, Uncle Mad. We're not finished traveling together."

Maddox chuckled.

"Not even close."

"Verenholt Academy of Arcane Arts accepts only the finest," Maddox said. "Very few are ever invited to study there. Fewer still graduate."

Cedric watched the three of them with a quiet smile.

"Which is why Elowen and I agreed it's the right place for Aaron and Nilly."

He leaned back in his chair, exchanging a brief glance with Elowen before continuing.

"Meanwhile, your mother and I are long overdue for a journey of our own."

Aaron looked up.

"You're leaving too?"

"For a while," Cedric replied. "Your mother and I chose this quiet life, and we've enjoyed every year of it. But there's still a whole world beyond these trees, and we thought it was time we went out and had a little fun together."

Elowen smiled softly beside him. She had loved their peaceful years in the cottage, raising Aaron and Nilly far from the troubles of the outside world. But the thought of traveling beside Cedric again brought a familiar spark to her eyes.

"And besides," Cedric added, "the four of you are ready to begin your own journey."
