Chapter 2:
The Bloody Exchange
I couldn’t reach Michael for the next few days, even though I followed him everywhere he was. My mind was filled only with thoughts about him, as I missed him so much. The worst part was that it seemed like the werewolves decided to have one always stay beside him, and every time I saw one of them close to my boyfriend, as I didn’t agree with breaking up, made me just more and more angry. More time without Michael’s blood just made it more difficult to put it at ease. It was also harder to fight hunger and I was catching myself looking at people and looking for an easiest target and I knew that soon I won’t be able to stop myself from killing them.
I just wanted my Michael to be on my side again. The more I was far from him the more obsessive my mind became. And I felt ashamed of that, because I liked that change of concept from puppet to partner, and all I could think of him was: He is mine and mine only. I knew that he was aware of me watching and following him, basically I changed into the worst kind of stalker. But I was depressed and determined to talk to him, so I decided to break into his place, not that I was spending most of my time there, however I was not welcomed there anymore. At least werewolves didn’t expect to do it, or they wanted this to happen, thinking that Michael would be repelled even more. But what scared me was the fact that even knowing him for years, I couldn’t guess what would be on his mind. For my luck he didn’t change locks yet, still I was feeling bad about it.
He was taking a shower, but the smell of his apartment was hideous for me. The time he was spending with werewolves was enough for his clothes and things permeated by the smell of them. The worst thing for a vampire's nose. I wanted to rush out of there, but resigning at that moment would make it harder to have another chance. The only thing left was waiting in the worst conditions possible. Michael finally came out of the shower and wasn’t surprised to see me.
“I heard someone came, but I thought that you would have more dignity and won’t show up here,” he said calmly but kept some distance. That hurt, so I tried to make a move in his direction, but the fear and anger I saw in his eyes stopped me right away. “What do you want? If you need your things, they are in a box next to the door. Now leave, we broke up.”
“I can’t accept it.” I whispered with all my confidence disappearing in a moment, when I realized that I wasn’t the one who was hurt, but I couldn’t let him go. “And I can’t live without you.”
“Me or my blood?” He put a lot of irony in his tone and somehow I couldn’t easily deny that there was definitely not only blood behind my feelings. “Have you ever considered telling me the truth or waiting for me to notice that you don;t change while I am growing old?”
“Well… I knew that I had to tell you sooner or later, but I didn’t want you to hear it from someone else.” Obviously there was no point in trying to explain myself.
Lies were not acceptable, but I didn’t know how to bring up that topic earlier, when we became friends, when we started seeing each other as a couple, while confessing or when we met and to my introduction that in a few years I would turn into a vampire.
“When was the right moment to tell you?!” I got closer to him.
“I don't know, maybe before you make me your puppet.” Michael also raised his voice, the atmosphere was getting heavier and the smell was only making it worse.
“It’s a partner!” I have corrected him. “And what would you do if I had told you earlier?! Would you agree to stay with me then?”
“I have no idea, but at least I would have a choice to be bound to you.”
There was something hidden in his voice, like a regret and sadness that I didn't give him a chance to say yes. That hit me hard like an accusation that I didn't trust him enough to be sure that he would accept me for who I was. My heart dropped when Michael started to cough so without thinking l took a knife and cut my arm to offer him my blood to help him feel better. He knew about that aspect too, so without hesitation he declined it.
“I would rather be sick. But I wanted to ask you, if I was only an easy prey for you or did you ever feel something for me?” He stopped me before I answered. “No, don't tell me I don't want to hear this. Just leave me, please.”
I didn't want to, but I knew there was no point to keep this conversation going. Michael was too upset so he wouldn't understand anything I would say anyway. It was raining the moment I left his place. There was no place I couldn't go, even hunger somehow stopped bothering me, as my heart was filled with despair.
Michael was this kid who missed almost half of the days at school, but still managed to befriend everyone. He was outgoing and kind, even though he was the one who had to ask for help to catch up with studies. And everyone was willing too, I had no idea what made him the popular kid, but I was always impressed by that, also about the fact that he didn't complain about his poor health. At least not when he was surrounded by people, as I developed a crush on him, I don't even know why and when, I just knew he captured my heart.
Getting close to him was a troublesome process, but I found him once sleeping on the desk in a library and I used that chance to finally talk to him and put my blouse on his shoulder, so he won’t be cold. That was the most embarrassing thing I did until then, but caring about him became my favourite thing later. I was sitting next to him, just watching him. Except for a charming personality, he was quite smart, because even with so many absences, he was able to keep good grades. Additionally he was also handsome, not in a trendy way, but he didn't have anything to be ashamed of. His attractiveness lied in something I heard girls described him as a ‘husband material’.
“Sorry, I didn’t know someone was here,” he said, still a bit stupid with sleep. “What is it?”
“You seemed cold, so I put it on your shoulders.” I smiled goofily, because I had my alone time with my crush, who started to laugh lightly.
“That’s why I was sleeping so soundly. Thank you. I get cold easily and it always wakes me up.” He wanted to give me my blouse back, but I asked him to keep it.
Michael still had that blouse. Since then we started to talk and soon became friends, best friends and finally a happy, in love couple. At least until what happened the other day. I was worried about him getting sick again, and the rain couldn't help me deal with all the feelings running through my heart.
I knew that I was running out of time and there were no signs that the situation between me and Michael could be any time better. Next morning I started to lose my mind, I was hungry for blood and all I could think of was who would be the easiest prey. The girl I talked to that day was easy to lure in a less crowded place and a second before my fangs sank into her neck I stopped because I realized I got to the point where I would kill her without hesitation. I ran away, but with every other person I passed I was analysing and looking for a way to get to them. Losing control scared me and the realization that I might have lost Michael forever. I was so angry that I wanted to blame someone else just not me and fortunately I saw that werewolf at that moment. If he didn't interfere I would still have my Michael by my side!
The confrontation wasn't the best idea of mine, but I lost the ability to think clearly already. I got to him and pinched to the closest wall having my arm on his neck. He seemed surprised for a second but then a smirk lightened up his face. I sensed his pack was close and soon they would gather around us.
“Why did you do that?!”
“What? Telling someone the truth about his vampire boyfriend. I don't think it's a bad thing.” His nonchalant attitude just was just frustrating me even more. “I guess you should have done that yourself a long time ago.”
My fist went back and I was ready to hit that blow, but I knew that the moment I would do it, I would have to survive a fight with a vengeful pack of werewolves. Not in this condition, not in these circumstances. The loss guaranteed.
“Why? If you have a problem with me, are you too afraid to attack me directly?” At least I wanted to know the source of his action.
“My only problem with you is that you are a vampire and it felt natural for me to dog you as much as possible.” He was laughing straight to my face, he knew there was no move for me to make. “And about your dear Michael, I don’t even like him.”
I was not sure if knowing that personal feelings were involved somehow would help me, but understanding there were none was devastating. All of that was easy to avoid if we just hadn't happened to meet at that particular time, at that particular place. I had to hide at home and my sisters watched me all the time, trying to help me hide the situation from our parents.
“Why won’t you just kill a human or two to buy yourself more time?” asked the oldest, like it was the most obvious solution. I gave her an angry look. “So just force Michael and drink his blood. You won’t kill your partner and anyone else for a while.”
“And his boyfriend only would hate him more,” the other one smirked. “But we cannot ignore the fact that you must do something. You know that you are getting close to the line when even with a partner's blood it would be hard to come back.”
“I won’t make him do anything.” I whispered, even though part of me wanted to follow my sister’s advice.
Just keep going as my instinct said and didn’t care, however I liked the idea of a future I hoped for, and I knew as soon as I went this way for sure that won’t ever happen. There was still a really slight chance that we could go back together if I would be patient, but considering the circumstances we were in, I didn’t have time to go with an approach like this. All I had left was to risk it all. Still I had no idea how to make it work, because I was too afraid to make a move to lose it all. My doubt made me wait the next few days while my hunger was swallowing my right mind, but my focus was on Michael instead of blood overall. I didn’t want it, I didn’t want to be this obsessive kind of boyfriend, but my pride was hurt and my heart shuttered so I gave up…
