Matters of Blood and Water

Halloween Carnage Claims Life of Controversial Community Leader.

What was supposed to be a fun night of candy and treats has turned into a nightmare for the City of New Haven. A torrent of gang violence erupted across the city over the weekend. Many stayed home as gunshots, break-ins, kidnappings, and arson ravaged the city. Police estimate at least 78 dead or wounded. Now, reports confirm the gruesome Halloween weekend has claimed the life of Giuseppe “Joey” Salvatore. The loss of this pillar of New Haven life has sent shockwaves across the city and serves as a capstone to the grisly night. “Don” Joey Salvatore is a man whom many are eager to speak about, so long as they aren’t on the record. Some prefer to remember his philanthropy and beloved chain of Italian restaurants and hotels. However, many have alleged connections to the Italian Mafia through his father, the notorious bootlegger “Joseph” Salvatore. “Joey” Salvatore was investigated by the FBI in 2013, though all charges were dropped.

“I can’t claim that every action that Gio made was a good one. But he was a man who did the best he could with the life fate handed him. He stood by those he cared for, and deserved a better way to go out.” Commented young Maureen O’Brien, a Yale Student, and Intern with “Rupert’s Lodge,” A Virginia-Based Non-Profit. Rupert’s Lodge chairman, Rupert Cumberland, had much less positive to say about the man. “New Haven seems to have mistaken locality for virtue. The man is a criminal, and his actions deserve to be condemned.”

Giuseppe “Joey” Salvatore is survived by his wife Esmeralda Castanon-Salvatore and son Joseph “José” Salvatore.
