Sasuke had agreed to a verification column. That did not mean he liked being entered in one.
After the debrief, Kakashi told him to have his shoulder checked before the next formation drill. He said it while Naruto was still arguing about whether snacks counted as tactical equipment. Sakura heard. Of course she heard. She reached for the folded page in her pouch as though she might write the appointment down.
"I can find the hospital," Sasuke said.
"I know," she answered. "Finding it isn't the problem."
That should have started another argument. Instead she took her medical book and went toward the Academy. Naruto followed Kakashi down the opposite path, demanding the rest of the day off in writing. Sasuke waited until all three had turned away before he shifted the strap of his pouch off the sore shoulder. The relief was immediate enough to irritate him.
He could have gone home. The clinic would still be there tomorrow, and he had already survived a bridge with worse than a strap against his skin. But tomorrow Kakashi would ask for the result. A blank space would answer him as plainly as a report.
The waiting room smelled of boiled cloth and the sharp cleaner used on treatment trays. A boy with a wrapped ankle watched Sasuke's forehead protector, then watched his arm. Sasuke took the seat farthest from the boy and kept both hands in his lap. He did not want an audience for a shoulder that could not even keep still under a bag.
The medic called his name before he had found a better way to leave.
She looked at the referral slip. "Wave. Shoulder wound and impact. Follow-up after your team's debrief."
"The wound's closed."
"That is one question answered." She pointed to a stool. "Sit."
He sat. The room had a screen, a narrow table, and a measuring arm fixed to the wall. There was no place to mistake for a sparring ring. He had still begun arranging his feet as if someone might attack from the doorway.
The medic noticed. She did not comment on the stance. "Pain at rest?"
"No."
"Pain when you dress?"
"Manageable."
"That wasn't the question."
Sasuke looked at the screen. Sakura would have asked the same thing with a pencil in her hand and concern he could not argue away. He had waited for her to leave because he did not want to perform recovery for her. Now the medic wanted an answer he could not improve by being alone.
"It catches when I pull a shirt over my head," he said.
"Which direction?"
He showed her without raising the arm all the way. The cloth of his sleeve pulled across the bruise. The wound on the outside had closed; the deeper ache had not cared.
She asked him to unwrap the bandage. He did it one-handed, slowly enough that he could feel himself being watched. Yellow bruising spread below the old punctures. She checked the skin and the warmth around it, then asked him to lift the arm forward until he had to stop. She stood to one side with the measuring arm and told him not to borrow motion from his back.
He reached above shoulder height. Pain caught. He lifted his shoulder blade to steal another inch.
"Back down," she said.
"I can get higher."
"You can move the rest of you higher. Try without it."
He lowered the arm. The second attempt stopped sooner. She marked the angle on the chart: ninety-two degrees before he changed his posture. On the uninjured side, he passed one hundred fifty without the same hitch. She did not call that difference a diagnosis. She wrote both numbers.
"Again, out to the side," she said.
That was worse. His hand rose level with his collarbone and the muscle under the bruise tightened. He held it there, jaw set. The medic watched the tremor in his fingers rather than his face.
"Stop."
"I didn't drop it."
"I saw."
She measured the side raise, then had him turn his forearm with his elbow kept near his ribs. He could do the small movement. That annoyed him too. A useful injury would have given one clear answer, broken or not broken. This one let him pass an easy test and fail a motion he needed for a block.
The medic set the instrument down. "What happens when someone comes in from that side?"
"I use the other arm."
"And when the other arm is occupied?"
"I move."
"Show me without striking anything."
He turned on the stool, reached as if to catch a wrist, and stopped before his hand met the edge of the screen. His shoulder had chosen the stopping point. He had not. The pause was small enough that a teammate might miss it on a good day and an opponent would not.
"You didn't tell your team about that," she said.
"I didn't need it during the meeting."
"You need it in the next drill."
Sasuke remembered Sakura writing what could be checked by someone who did not care for an explanation. He had supplied the rule himself. He could not make it stop at Naruto's warnings because the evidence now wore his skin.
"How long?" he asked.
"I won't make a date out of one examination. No full-contact sparring or resistance work through that shoulder until reassessment. Controlled movement only if it stays within the range we measured today. If it worsens, you come back before training again."
"Kakashi can supervise."
"He can supervise a restriction. He cannot erase it."
The medic wrote while he watched. Wave injury, healed surface, bruising, forward lift limited to ninety-two degrees without compensation, side lift stopped by pain and tremor. No full-contact sparring. Reassessment required. There was no sentence about courage or potential. He preferred that, though it left him nothing to argue against.
She made two copies. On one she wrote the operational limits for his instructor. The other held the measurements and her notes. She did not ask Sakura to come sign it. Sasuke was grateful for half a breath, then angry that gratitude had arrived at all.
"You can tell your team what they need for training," she said. "The examination stays here."
"She'll ask for the numbers."
"Then you decide what to share beyond the limit. The limit itself isn't optional."
That was an irritatingly precise division. He took the instructor's copy by its clean edge. A full spar with Naruto tomorrow had been a simple thing to want. It was no longer available, and losing it on paper felt more final than losing a point in the dirt.
The medic turned the chart toward him. "Sign here to say you were told. It isn't a clearance form."
He read every line. At the bottom, beneath the space for his name, was a return instruction. No promise that obeying today would make tomorrow easier. Only a test that could be repeated and compared.
"I understand the restriction," he said.
"Good."
He put the pen down without signing. The medic did not reach for it or hurry him. He stood, picked up his pouch with the other hand, and took one step toward the door. He could leave with an unsigned notice and say later that the clinic had been busy. The measurement would still be in the chart. His absence would not change the angle.
"Uchiha," the medic said. "I haven't finished telling you what to watch for tonight."
He stopped. Pride wanted the doorway. The part of him that had insisted on a verification column wanted an answer that survived his mood.
He returned to the stool. She went through the changes that meant coming back sooner. He listened. He asked one question about the difference between the two movements and received an answer about loading the injured side, not a prediction about when he would be ready. Then he signed beneath the restriction.
Outside, the boy with the wrapped ankle was gone. Sasuke had the corridor to himself. He tried the forward lift once, without the medic or the wall instrument, and felt the same catch. No one had been there to force it. That made it harder to dismiss.
He folded Kakashi's copy once. He would hand it over. He did not decide whether he would tell Sakura the numbers. She could know that the medic had barred full contact without being invited to watch every degree he failed. She might dislike that distinction. She was allowed to.
Sakura met him at the turn by the Academy, her medical book under one arm. He could have let her ask Kakashi why the restriction existed. Instead he said, "I nearly left before the medic finished giving instructions. I went back."
She stopped. "You nearly left in the middle?"
"I'm telling you what happened. Kakashi gets the training limits. The chart stays there."
"Then I'll get the limits from him," she said. She did not ask for the numbers.
The street beyond the turn was full of people carrying ordinary loads. Sasuke moved his pouch to the other side and joined them. He had lost a sparring match that had not happened yet. He had not lost the right to choose how to fight the next one. The paper in his hand made those different facts, even when his shoulder did not feel like agreeing.
