Chapter 23:

Do it in Portions!

The Outcast of the Mage's Association

“Meilyn, you…” Ishan mumbled.

Shoot! Why did you come out already! I was trying to leave without anyone noticing!

“I… was just playing around?”

“Like hell you were playing around! Why didn’t you tell me that your spell would hurt you!” he yelled as he dashed toward my side and wiped away my blood with the sleeves of his shirt.

“Hey, your shirt is going to get dirty, stop that!” I replied as I caught his arm.

“Meilyn, that’s not the problem right now! What about you? Aren’t you hurt?” he bit his lips as he stared at my face.

“This is nothing. A piece of cake,” I replied, trying to smile brightly.

But it didn’t have any effect as Ishan still stared at me in frustration and wiped my blood away.

“Did you know this would happen?” he said, his voice strained.

“Sorry, I didn’t expect it to end up like this either…”

“Meilyn, you really should be careful! Look at Pointy ears. He might collapse at this rate,” Tannie chuckled bitterly.

“This blood is nothing. I don’t understand your drama and stop wiping it already!” I hissed.

“He is right, that was reckless!” Ishan replied.

“Seriously?” I answered, defeated.

Am I the only normal person in this place?

Aren’t those two overreacting?

Actually why do I even worry?

At the end of the day I feel like that pudding from the breakfast menu that I couldn’t eat.

All jiggle jiggle.

Since we are at it, why am I not going along?

“Could you do me a favor?” I asked Ishan who was focused on cleaning my hands now.

“Yeah?” he replied, still wiping them with his sleeves.

“I feel like a pudding, please carry me!” I said with a defeated expression.

Ishan slightly raised the corners of his lips but still looked dead serious.

Okay, fine! I get it.

I was incredibly reckless and should have talked about possible risks.

Not like I would have acted any differently, though…

But yeah, I am really, really sorry so please stop glaring at me!

“I already planned on doing that anyway,” he replied as he gently lifted me up from the ground.

“Next time please tell me when you feel unwell, we are friends now! So rely on me a little!” he replied coldly.

“F-fine,” I mumbled.

Then he smiled slightly.

I raised my hands above my face to shield myself from him before I would get affected a second time.

Nice one Meilyn!

You saved yourself right there!

“Also, Meilyn, why do you keep looking away when I smile? Tannie said something about deadly gaze, but I don’t get it,” he asked genuinely, wondering.

Damn Ishan, are you blind?

Are you lost? What is wrong with you?

Anyone would crumble if a nymph smiled at them.

I swear I can even hear the birds chirping each time you smile!

“J-just.”

“Just?”

“Do it in portions!” I yelled.

My voice echoed through the whole hallway.

“Portions?” Ishan asked, confused.

I looked down at Tannie who understood what I meant.

“Pointy ears, you are dangerous for the heart. At least warn us before you smile!”

“Okay?” he answered, still confused.

Then he carried me into a room and gently placed me in a bed, covered me with a blanket and closed the curtains.

“Your job is to rest now! I will take a look at Elaine and then I will come back,” he said.

“You don’t have to! Just stay with the little cutie, she needs some brother-sister time right now!”

Ishan chuckled at these words.

“Really, it’s all thanks to you Meilyn! Thank you so much for saving her life. No matter what I say, my words wouldn’t be enough to thank you,” he said as he patted my head gently.

I caught his hand.

“Enough with the thank you and sorry. Let’s just start from the beginning instead,” I held his hand and shook it.

“Hello, I am Meilyn Taira and I am seventeen-years old. I am a half-demon and I just registered in the Association. Nice to meet you!” I said, smiling brightly.

Ishan’s eyes softened and he cleared his throat.

“The pleasure is mine! I am Ishan Eldore, I am eighteen-years old. I am a Nymph and I would love to get along with you Meilyn!” he said and then hugged me tightly.

“W-wait hugging wasn’t included!” I shrieked in panic.

This is too much affection for someone you just hated, I mean didn’t care about before!

P-Please some distance!

H-help Tannie!
But Tannie just grinned like a madman.

Then Ishan let go, and gave me another pat on the head.

“I will still come back later! No refusing, rest well now and sleep a little.” he said and closed the door to the room as he left.

“T-tannie?”

“Are you still breathing?! You were moving like a cat,” he laughed out loud.

“It’s not funny! You were supposed to save me, why did you just grin like a psycho?!” I said as I threw one of the pillows at Tannie.

“But isn’t it good now? Elaine is safe and Pointy ears is kind.”

“Yeah,“ I said calmly.

“But Tannie did you realize something when Pointy–I mean Ishan told his story.”

“So you caught on too, Meilyn?”

“Of course I did, I was just too distracted by Elaine’s condition that I couldn’t mention it but…”

“Navier and Zea were names we saw in the student’s list,” Tannie finished my sentence.

“And they are missing, like Raiden and not only that.”

“The barrier broke during the demon attack…” Tannie continued.

“Who would be capable of doing so?” I asked him.

“A strong Mage, perhaps…”

“A Grand Mage,” I gulped.

“Say Meilyn, do you want to tell Calica or Pointy ears the truth?”

“You mean that I am searching for Raiden?”

“Yeah.”

“I…” I swallowed.

“I’m still not sure. I feel like it would be unfair to hide this from Ishan after he told me about his sister but…”

“It’s okay Mei, if you need more time, then we will just slowly approach them,” Tannie said while trying to climb on the bed.

I leaned forward and gently grabbed him, now holding him in my hands.

“No, I actually think I need their help. There is just so much we two can do on our own, but we should look for the right time to tell them. When no one is listening, you know?”

“Yeah Mei, I know. Because ears are everywhere. Anyone could be an enemy. They could listen to us even now.”

As I leaned my head on Tannie, who didn’t resist, I finally realized something.

If I want to find Raiden I have to prepare myself for the worst.
