Chapter 36:

The Overlord of Gluttony II

Dance of Thorns

Rell awoke atop of a skyscraper. Elena embraced him tightly, her arms wrapped around his chest. She was unconscious.

"What the..." He coughed, sitting up, carefully pushing Elena to his lap. "You saved me again..." He said, addressing her.

The entire cityscape had collapsed around him. Enormous spikes of earth jutted out in various places, piercing the buildings. Canyons gouged the streets, several buildings falling into them into the void of the ground.

Rell looked, seeing the Overlord standing in the distance. In a single motion, it had destroyed the entire city. It smiled, looking satisfied.

"You bastard..." Rell cursed.

The ground suddenly rumbled underneath him.

"Oh no..." He let out.

The building shook, tipping over into the canyon that formed next to it. Rell began to slide off the roof, cradling Elena.

"No no no!" He let out, as he slid downwards into the abyss below.

He caught a grip on a jutting pipe with his free hand, the other hand tightly wrapped around the sleeping Elena.

"Dammit!" He cried as the angle grew steeper, until he was basically hanging over the void below as the building came to a halt. "Elena, you need you to wake up. Elena!" He shook the girl.

The building shook, the sound of creaking strain echoing out, before finally snapping, sliding down into the void. Rell let go of the pipe, wrapping his arms around Elena. He picked her up, running along the slanted slope of the rooftop, desperately trying to reach a sewage pipe that peeked out the side of the cliff. He Shadow Sprinted, but the sprint didn't boost his momentum, it only gave him more time.

He leapt, spiraling through the air with the Sister in his arms. He twisted his body to protect her from the impact as his back slammed into the the enormous pipe. He began to slide off, cursing the whole time.

"Oh no..." He slid off, spiraling towards his death.

He suddenly slammed into a solid piece of earth with a thud.

"Ow..." He let out.

He collected himself, sitting up. The chunk of earth Protruded out unnaturally from the cliff wall. Several fading Earth Nin Runes still glowed faintly along it.

"Rell." Luna peeked her head over the cliff's edge, looking down and tilting her head.

"Luna... thank you." He sighed.

"You guys all right?" Mira peeked her head over as well.

"You guys survived that attack?" Rell asked.

"Luna saved us. She made an earth Nin barrier for everyone near her. We just missed you guys. I don't know what happened to the Major, but Rin and Rena are all right as well." Mira explained.

"Stairs." Luna said, tapping a finger into the ground, several blocks of earth suddenly popping out along the cliff wall.

 Rell walked up, carrying Elena.

"What now?" Rell asked.

"We need to regroup." Rin said, carrying Rena on her shoulder.

"It used Earth Nin..." Rena said. "That's impossible."

"Mhm." Mira agreed. "Shadows use their own Nin, not elemental Nin." Mira said. "At least, that's all we've observed."

"No point in thinking about it now." Rin shook her head. "This was way beyond anything I could've imagined."

"How did the first Sisters even kill these things? How strong were they?" Mira quivered. "While the rest of us are...."

"Hey!" Rell yelled. "We can't think about that now. Follow Rin's plan." Elena squirmed in his arms, but she didn't wake up.

"Come on. We need to get away from here. Looks like things are still collapsing." Rin directed.

"Right." They agreed, following after her.
