Chapter 39:

The Overlord of Gluttony V

Dance of Thorns

Rell followed Anto down the winding, collapsing streets. The Overlord had fundamentally altered the landscape. Pipes jutted out from the ground, cliffs formed with buildings atop them. Cars fell into valleys that split the city into segments, while spike formations towered in the place of skyscrapers, jutting up at odd angles.

"Where are you taking me?" He asked Anto.

"Follow." Anto answered, not saying much else.

Mara and West walked to either side of him. When he would fade into the shadowy realm, he could hear their footsteps, see them clearly. Make out their words. In the real world they were just shadowy silhouettes, and their voices came out garbled and distorted.

Anto came to stop. Rell approached him, unsure of what he was waiting for.

"I followed. What now?" He asked.

Anto looked at Rell, his face still obscured by shadow, before pointing upwards.

Rell turned and looked.

The Overlord of Gluttony looked down on him with a satisfied grin.

"What did I..." He questioned.

Anto was gone. So were Mara and West. He was standing alone within the reach of the massive Shadow. The Shadow slammed down on him with its gigantic hand, sending out a shockwave of dust as it hit the earth. Rell appeared a short distance away, drawing his weapon. He channeled Shadow Nin, his sword set ablaze with the dark flames of Shadow Nin. he shadow sprinted at the Overlord. The Overlord raised its hand, seemingly confident in its barriers ability to block the attack.

"Take this!" Rell screamed, swinging at its hand.

Rell's shadow Nin seared through the barrier, slicing off one of the Overlord's fingers easily. The Overlord howled in pain, withdrawing its hand.

"I'm not done!" He screamed, Shadow Sprinting towards the creature.

The Overlord channeled Earth Nin, flaring its hands as a row of spikes exploded, colliding into Rell. He After Imaged, appearing behind the row of spikes. The Overlord revved its arm back, before flaring it forward, sending a volley of spikey rocks flying at Rell. He dodged most utilizing After Image and Shadow Sprinting, but one found its mark, slamming into his chest and knocking him backwards.

The Overlord rolled its arms, summoning an orbital belt of rock and debris that spiraled around it. With a flick, it sent a gigantic boulder flying towards Rell.

"Sir Rell!" Hina cried out, Flicker Stepping and picking him up, before Flicker Stepping away just as the boulder came down.

They appeared a short distance away.

"Major..." Rell shook his head. "You're alive."

"Not for long if we stay here." She responded. "Hold on. I'm going to get us out of here."

"I can't." he protested. "I think fighting that thing will help me find my friends. We need to beat it."

"What? Did you see what it can do? It devastated five squads at once. We need to escape." Hina directed. "Don't be stubborn. We'll die if we stay here."

"No. I can't leave." Rell protested.

"Please, help us." Anto's voice called once more.

"I can't leave them!" He pushed himself free of Hina's grip just as a barrage of rocks slammed into their position.

Hina appeared alone a distance away, coming out of her flicker step. Rell came out of his After Image on the opposite side from where Hina was. He turned his attention towards the Overlord. The Overlord raised its hands, pulling two enormous boulders from the ground. The boulders hovered in the air, spinning and generating their own orbit, drawing in smaller boulders and debris from the ground below.

"Please." Their voices called again.

"I'm coming guys!" He screamed, leapting forward and Shadow Sprinting.

"What the hell?" Hina shook her head in disbelief as Rell charged towards his death. "Dammit!"

Hina summoned a row of Light Nin swords, firing at volley towards the Overlord. They clattered against its shield, leaving visible cracks but accomplishing nothing, save for gaining the Overlord's attention. With a flick, one of the massive boulders launched towards Hina's position.

She clicked her tongue, Flicker stepping but getting caught in the shockwave, slamming her against a cliffside and causing her to tumble into the valley below.

Rell continued his charge, bouncing off several floating rocks as he closed the distance to the Overlord. Rell charged Shadow Nin, dodging out of the way of another rock as he slashed the Overlord's barrier, shattering it and clipping the creature's side. The Overlord howled, summoning a pillar from the ground which slammed into Rell, sending him flying upwards.

"Oh no..." He noticed the swarm of rocks soaring towards him as he rag dolled through the air.

Hina flicker stepped in front of him, pushing him out of the way before flicker stepping again, dodging the attack. She hit the ground, losing her balance and tumbling forward, further covering his white uniform in dirt and blood. Rell fell a moment after her, dropping his sword as he slid across the ground.

"There's something seriously wrong with you!" She cried out, forcing herself to her feet. Her arm fell limp to her side. It was most likely broken. "Are you trying to die!?"

Hina's bun had come loose, letting her long silver fall freely. Red streaks stained it, giving it crimson highlights. She stood up, gesturing her saber at the Overlord, channeling another row of Light Nin. The Overlord grinned.

"Dammit..." She gasped. "It's this really how I die?"
