Chapter 0:

Prologue

Familiar

Early one morning, before the sunrise, two men walked to the outskirts of a small town. The larger of the two carried a large bag filled with heavy tools for construction. His eyes were still half closed with sleepiness.

"Did the boss have to call us out so early?"

The shorter of the two, who had already downed an entire pot of coffee before leaving home, scoffed.

"Probably too lazy to do it himself."

They both nodded in agreement before continuing in silence.

At times like this, not being able to afford a car to drive to the construction site was a real pain. But there wasn't getting any money for a car without putting in the work, so they bit back their complaints most of the time.

The morning commute was the only exception to this unspoken rule between the two of them.

The shorter man, fueled by caffeine, ran ahead of his coworker.

He felt a chill run down his spine just as the construction site came into view. He figured that it was due to the chilly morning air.

But in an instant, the entire atmosphere morphed.

The sluggish man watched as his fellow coworker and friend suddenly fell apart into pieces before collapsing in a pile. He stopped in place, frozen with shock and utter disbelief.

Was this a dream?

"Hey!" Throwing down the bag of tools on the floor, he ran to where his friend was lying. He felt a chill run down his spine, but the adrenaline running through him gave him no time to process that.

He had just made it when he saw his hands fall off.

The last coherent thought he had before blacking out was to wonder who was going to tell his family.

At no point did he realize that this was only the beginning.
