Chapter 18:

Chapter 15 - Transferees, The Myth of Potato Salad, What Else?

Shadowed Love

“Hihi, hi Catte!” Lily grinned and chuckled, then waved at me. Hazuka just nodded his head at me with a funny, serious face.

“Miss Talia, you’re late!” I heard Sir Arian’s thundering voice. I peeked at the back of Lily and saw Sir Arian walking towards me.

“May you want to say your excuse about why you are late for my class?” he asked while crossing his arms and staring intently at me.

“I… I overslept…” I answered while looking down, he was about to go crazy when I added a reason that would definitely calm him down. “B-because I was studying really hard on your subject so I can answer your quizzes.”

Contrary to my expectations, I guess he just found a reason to roast me.

“Are you saying that my teachings are not enough to make you understand the lesson!?” he slightly raised his voice.

“N-no sir.”

“Then why!? Whatever, go back to your seat and listen properly to my lesson!” he said and pointed to my seat, so I did what he said.

Why is he so mad? It’s not like I’m always late for his class. And it also doesn’t mean that if he comes to our class and teaches, we will always understand it right away. Haaaaaa, what a way to start my morning.

“All right, sit over there beside Miss Talia.” Sir Arian said, and the two nodded, then walked towards me.

“We’ll always be together, huh?” Lily whispered as they sat.

Sir Arian started with his lesson and, as usual, finished with a quiz.

“So you really need to listen to him in his discussions because he always gives quizzes at the end of his lesson. I see.” I heard Lily whispering to herself and nodding. Our class’ seating arrangement is 3 seats in 4 columns and I was sitting between the two.

“Time’s up. Pass your papers to Miss Talia. Miss Talia, give it to me before going home. Make sure it’s complete.” Sir Arian reminded me and left the classroom. Right after he left, Miss Nager entered the classroom, so I decided to collect their papers during break time.

“Good morning class.” She greeted us right away, we stood up and greeted her back before sitting down.

“I heard there are two transferees? May you two stand up and introduce yourselves?” she said, then Lily and Hazuka stood up.

“Hi ma’am! I’m Lily Jyvaeh. I just saw you and I already feel like you’re a great teacher! I’m excited to be taught by such a teacher!” she brightly introduced herself and I could see sparkles and stars in her background.

“Just the same feeling for Sir Arian.” I heard my classmate in front of me whisper and sighed.

“I’m Hazuka Liones, hi.” Hazuka introduced himself like an unfriendly dude—well, compared to Lily’s.

“All right, thank you. I hope you two are good kids. By the way, I’m Yula Nager, a professor in your general mathematics. I don’t have that many extra activities, unlike your first subject, so you rest assured about me.” Miss Nager also introduced herself. And it’s almost okay, not until she says she does not have those extra activities she tells us to do. Imma just shut my mouth.

“Wow, she also scammed us with those on the first day. That’s already old school.” I heard my classmate in front of me whisper again. See, even he knows it.

“All right, let’s start our discussion.” She said and started teaching.

And as expected, she told us to make a 15 item questionnaire about the topic today which she will use in our future quizzes—just some of it.

As a normal school day, the bell rang after Miss Nager’s class. Lily and Hazuka stuck with me while going to the cafeteria until I went to my group’s table.

“Oh Talia! You became friends with them right away? What a friendly friend we have here.” Jillian commented when I just stood there, shying away.

“Come on, sit with us.” Cassie offered the seat beside her. “Thank you!” Lily replied and sat there while Hazuka just remained standing.

“What? Come on, sit!” Lily pulled Hazuka to sit beside her. He just sat there awkwardly and it made me laugh on the inside. He’s being shy. And I laughed again on the inside.

I sat beside Nagie and grabbed one of her snacks. It’s not human meat, so it’s okay.

“Hey, go buy your food there. Plus, here, go buy food for them as well.” She handed me some money and I stood up.

“What do you want to eat?” I asked the two.

“Uhh…” Hazuka seemed undecided. Oh shit, how can I be that dumb? Of course they don’t know it yet. But before I started to speak and invite them, Lily had already said it for me.

“Let’s go! We’ll tag along.” Lily said, and pulled Hazuka towards the cashier. Why does it look like Hazuka was always pulled around by Lily?

“Catte, the menus here are all just for vampires, aren’t they? Not that it’s not obvious.” She whispered to my ear while looking at the menu above.

“Do you just want the chicken skin? It’s usually for vampires who don’t feel well, but it’s okay to purchase.” I said, asking them two.

“Uhm…. Can I just go vegetarian? I can’t bear to eat another part of a fellow animal.” Lily answered me with a disgusted face. Hazuka agreed with her by nodding.

“Uhh………” I looked on the menu for a while, I couldn’t recommend anything. It’s all for vampires here.

“Never mind. I forgot Sir Varean gave us the food. Come on.” Lily said, and pulled me out of the cafeteria to go to the locker room.

“Yeah right. He gave us this.” Hazuka commented while looking at the cloth covering something.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“Sir Varean gave us these this morning. He said it would be our lunch for school, since all of the menu is all for vampires. And are we vampires? No.” Lily explained and answered my question and hers.

We came back to the cafeteria and sat on our spot earlier.

“What’s that?” Jillian asked us about the thing Lily is currently distributing to me and Hazuka.

“I don’t really know. I just found it in front of my door and decided to take it. I had a feeling it was food. Do you also want to take a

bite?” Lily explained and offered her lunch box to the others.

“Okay.” My three friends answered and started to take a bite of Lily’s food, so I also tasted mine.

This is human food! Potato salad!

“This is quite delicious. I wonder what it is.” Cassie commented and took another bite.

“Yeah right? It’s really delicious.” Lily agreed and my two friends also agreed by nodding their heads.

“Um, guys? Do you remember the potato salad I talked about last time?” I asked them.

“Hm? What about it?”

“Uhh… this is potato salad.” I said and looked at them.

“Potato salad!?” they said synchronously. Lily giggled while Hazuka looked at them weirdly.

“Lily, Hazuka, you two are royals!?” Jillian asked both of them.

“Huh?” Lily looked at them confused and so was Hazuka.

“Kael said potato salad is only eaten by royals or if not, you’re offered a potato salad by a royal. No one lower than a royal has ever eaten it.” Nagie explained while still looking shocked.

“Huh? I thought potato salad is---“ I kicked Lily’s under the table so she didn’t finish her sentence.

“Oh, this is potato salad!?” she acted shocked.

“Yes!” the three answered.

“What the fuck…..” she just continued on acting.

“You’re offered a potato salad by a royal? Woaahhhhhh……” Nagie commented and looked amusingly at the three of us who just wanted to get swallowed by the soil.

“Hehe…” Lily just answered it all with a bright smile.

“Hey Catte, what the fuck did you do about the history of potato salad?” Lily whispered to me when we were on the way back to the classroom.

“I’m sorry, I’ll explain later.” I answered and we all sat in our respected seats.

5 minutes after that, our always late teacher entered our classroom. I don’t really know how many times he got his wage lowered because of him being late. However, he teaches very well on our practical subject. He made things easy for us to understand and that’s what I love about that teacher.

“Good afternoon, class. We’ll be having our quiz first about the past subject before having our practical application. Our practical applications will be groupings and you’ll need to sell whatever you want and apply the fundamentals of business.” He greeted us with that. He usually looks like a person that just got up from bed with his sad-looking eyes, but he seems dazzling today.

“Also, transferees, will you introduce yourselves?”

“Good afternoon, sir! I’m Lily Jyvaeh. I just saw you and I already feel like you’re a great teacher! I’m excited to be taught by such a teacher!” she said exactly what she said in Miss Nager’s class. Also with her bright smile and cheery tone. It sounded like a recording.

“Just the same as earlier.” I heard my classmate in front of me whisper. Déjà vu?

“I’m Hazuka Liones, good afternoon.” Hazuka also said exactly what he said in Miss Nager’s class.

“Thank you very much.”

Our quiz started and the two transferees are exempted because they just got here. Our teacher grouped us into 5 persons each group. I don’t know if it’s my luck or unluckiness, but I got grouped with those two. We’re together. Again.

“So…… what do you guys want to sell?” Lily initiated the discussion.

“Eyeball lollipops are quite popular these days.” My classmate, Qeru, answered. She’s quite trendy, so I won’t complain if she suggests something popular.

“I think sticky fingers are more interesting.” My other classmate, Poui, answered. He’s always interested in pretty stuff, so his answer is not questionable.

“Um…. Guys… don’t you want something more unique?” Lily asked. I think she felt uncomfortable with the answers.

“Like what?” Poui and Qeru asked.

“Um…. Like detachable wings?” Lily answered as she got an unexplainable expression on her face.

“Oh, that would be cool.” Poui commented.

“But won’t there be too much work and materials? I don’t think they would buy it if it’s too expensive.” Qeru seems to be thinking about other stuff.

“You’re right.” Lily agreed with Qeru.

“How about a special, customized necklace that they would secretly give to the person they like?” Hazuka suddenly suggested, and we all looked at him. I think we are all thinking the same thing.

“I’m with Hazuka.” I said and immediately raised my hand.

“Me too.” Lily also raised her hand.

“We’ll go with Hazuka.” The other two agreed and raised their hands.

“All right. Catte, what do you think we’ll need?” Hazuka asked me. Oh god, I thought I was already excluded from this group and all I can do is listen to them and agree. Thanks, Hazuka!

“Uh… I think something cute and romantic but will also describe how or why they like that person?” I am unsure about my answer.

“Okay class. Time’s up. Go back to your proper seats.” Our professor announced, so we stood up and picked up our things.

“We’ll talk about it at the next meeting.” Hazuka said to all of us and we all nodded.

Our school ended after the next professor. I parted ways with Cassie, Jillian, and Nagie because I still have a part-time job to attend on.

Now I’m currently walking with Lily and Hazuka on the way to Sir Varean’s office in the fast-food chain where I work.

We casually entered the fast-food chain to avoid disturbing the customers and co-workers. I don’t know if I’m just imagining it or the employees are really looking at us in awe.

What the fuck? They don’t usually look like that on me, so I think it’s because of the two beside me. I forgot they’re the trusted detectives of Sir Varean, so I guess they all know each other.

“Hey Lily, you two are quite popular in the organization, huh?” I secretly whispered to Lily on my left.

“Of course. I’m the great and mighty Lily, so why wouldn’t I be popular?” she asked back. It just made me chuckle until we were in front of Sir Varean’s office. Hazuka just knocked once before Sir Varean let us in.

“Good afternoon, sir.” Hazuka greeted him and respectfully bowed.

“Good afternoon!” Lily greeted him and waved her hand with a bright smile.

“Good afternoon, hehe. What am I doing here?” I also greeted him and asked myself. What am I doing here? Is there anything he’ll

assign us again?

“Good afternoon. I’m glad you three are complete. By the way, did you guys like the potato salad I sent you?” Sir Varean asked.

“Yes!” I immediately answered. “Of course it’s your favorite, why wouldn’t you like it?” he said and smiled kindly. The two looked at me saying ‘it’s your favorite?’ but didn’t ask it loudly.

“Lily did enjoy them. She ate them happily.” Lily commented. “But did you enjoy it?” Sir Varean asked her.

“Of course. It’s from you, sir. So why wouldn’t I like it?”

“How about you, Hazuka?” Sir Varean turned to Hazuka, who looked like he wanted to say something.

“I indeed enjoyed them. It’s my first time eating potato salad and it’s really delicious.” Hazuka answered. He looks like he’s trying really hard to keep his composure and just wanted to smile brightly, but is shy.

“I’m glad, then. Since you all liked it, I will make and send them to Lily so it will be your lunch every day.” He said and I

immediately reacted with my face.

“What!?” It’s unbelievable. It’s my favorite, yes. But eating it as lunch every day is a no!

“Huh? Isn’t it your favorite?” Sir Varean asked, acting innocently.

“I’ll gladly eat it, sir.” Hazuka said.

“I enjoyed it, so yay!” Lily said and gave a thumbs up.

“I guess it’s okay.” He said and leaned on his backrest.

“But sir, may I ask? Are you perhaps a royal?” Hazuka asked and looked at him. Sir Varean made a confused expression.

“What are you talking about, Hazuka?” Sir Varean asked him back. Oh no, the great legend is about to be spilled to the great boss.

“Uhm, Catte’s group of friends claimed that a person named ‘Kael’ said that potato salad can only be eaten by royals or royals will offer it to you. You’re currently offering us your service, so I think you might be a royal.”

“What? No way. Potato salad is just a normal salad from the human world. I have lived in the human world most of my life, so I know how to do it. But what a great story, by the way.” Sir Varean answered and chuckled a little.

“Noted sir.”

“By the way, how are your missions doing?” he asked.

“We currently have clues on the location of all the antiques and Catte is currently holding on it.” Hazuka answered Sir Varean’s

question for us.

“That’s great. I hope you all find it before we have our revenge.” He replied and smiled again.

“Yes, sir.” We three answered in synch.

“All right. You can go now. Thank you for your time. Good afternoon.” Sir Varean dismissed our meeting and so we bowed in respect.

“Thank you for your time. Good afternoon.” We each said and left his office.

I started working as usual and went home after that. I did my assignment and went to sleep. That’s my usual routine.

Tomorrow came and we had our usual class and lunch break. We’re currently discussing the theme and color scheme of our group business since it’s professor Jaeri’s class.

“I think the best theme would be ‘I’m shy but I love you’ since they will secretly give the necklaces to the ones they like.” Lily suggested.

“That’s cute.” Poui commented.

“I think so too. Should we go with that one?” I agreed and asked them.

“Sure.” Qeri and Hazuka agreed.

“All right, for the color scheme, how about pastels and bright colors?” Qeri suggested and everyone thought about it. It seems like they don’t know how to disagree with it but they want to improve her idea.

“How about slightly dark colors with pastels? I think since we’re vampires, dark colors would fit other’s taste in colors and have

pastels to add contrast.” I suggested. Woahhh, calling myself a vampire is very weird. Too weird for me.

“Oh, I agree.” Lily immediately agreed.

“I think that’s better.” Qeri also agreed.

“Yes, that’s actually a good idea.” Hazuka commented. It’s rare to hear him complimenting someone.

“I agree.” That’s Poui.

“And lastly, what do you think our materials should look like?” Hazuka asked.

“I think since they’re giving it to someone they like, it should be cute.” Poui suggested, and looked at us, who also seemed to agree.

“That’s good. But being cute is too simple. How about placing something that describes why or how they like that person?” Hazuka also suggested.

“Yup.” Poui shortly agreed and we all both smiled in agreement.

Now our plan is all finished. All we have to do is to buy the materials and organize our expenses and prices.

“Can you guys write on a piece of paper what you think we should have as necklace materials?” Hazuka asked and we all agreed before going back to our seats.

“That’s all for our class today. I hope you built a whole plan during our 1 hour class. Anyway, tomorrow will be our practical application and I would appreciate it if you would at least bring a small stall or a stand to have your things organized for business. Thank you.” With that, Sir Jaeri left our classroom.

“AHHHHHHHHH I’M EXCITED FOR TOMORROW!!!!!!!” Lily shouted and jumped up but sat down immediately when our next teacher entered the classroom and looked weirdly at her.

Note; if you know Osana Najimi from ‘Komi Can’t Communicate’, Lily’s voice is like hers when she’s introducing herself in front of everyone.
