Chapter 3:

Trapped

Bastion

Liam-31 stepped up the stairs, his trigger on the auto rifle in case he would have to confront any creatures that lurked the various amounts of rooms that were in the building.

What appeared to be a normal office building was nothing less than a remnant of the past, cubicles trashed and cluttered, chairs and computers scattered around the floor. Liam-31 watched his step as he moved around the objects, not wanting to create too much noise.

Before leaving the room, Liam-31 encountered the only cubicle not destroyed, with what appeared to hold various picture frames of family photos and portraits. Picking up one of the picture frames, Liam-31 realized that a man once worked at this cubicle, viewing his wife and two children, each bearing beautiful smiles on their face.

Picking up other photos, he saw a portrait of the man himself, the appearance of a strong willed, Japanese man with a shining smile that could lift those around him. Liam-31 looked at the photo with distress, his eyes shaking, knowing that the man who once had a family and a life could have been dead for years.

And so too his family.

Putting down the picture frame on the cubicle desk, he continued his search into the next room, similarly scattered with objects like the last. There were no windows that could allow Liam-31 to look outside, the light from his visor was the only thing that could let him see through the dark building.

However, unlike like the last room, there was what seemed to be small amounts of spider webs around the corner of the walls. They weren't big enough to have been created by an arachnae, so Liam-31 thought they were created by regular spiders, having been there for ages.

Before leaving the room and heading into a hall with another row of stairs, Liam-31 saw what appeared to be a discoloration in the walls near the door. Focusing his light on the discoloration, Liam-31 soon recognized what it was;

Dried blood.

The blood was all around the door, and what appeared to be faint prints of fingers could be seen, seemingly having been clinging to the door frame.

"How old is the blood on this wall?" Liam-31 quietly asked ANTI, as it began to highlight the dried blood, displaying texts of code.

"It is estimated to be around four years old." ANTI responded, as Liam-31, now more alerted than ever, entered the next room to the stairs.

Upon looking up the stairs, the spider webs he had seen before were scattered at the top of the stair case, cluttered, and larger in size. They didn't appear to have been holding any type of lifeforms in its webs, and they were ripped and torn from their original state.

Walking up to one of the spider webs, Liam-31 tried to rip off one of the strands from the webs, struggling as he realized that the webs were not able to be damaged. Letting go of the strand, he pinched his two fingers together, before struggling to release them from each other, as thick strands of small webs were formed between his fingers.

It was apparent that an arachnae made its nest in this building, but it was not apparent if it had been killed or left its nest, due to the destroyed spider webs. Cleaning his hands from the sticky strands, he continued his way up the stairs, cautious as to what could come next.

Opening the door to the next room, unlike the others, it held no signs of objects inside, only more amounts of spider webs, all around the walls and ceiling of the room. They were not as torn as the ones from the stair case, and Liam-31 was cautious to not step on the amounts of spider webs that clung to the floor.

Finally reaching the door, Liam-31 carefully turned the doorknob. As he peered into the room, he saw what he dreaded would never have been seen.

Human bodies, trapped in the sticky webs of the walls, their bodies shells of what were once lively humans, now husks with no sign of life.

They were young and old, male and female, and were wearing what seemed to be ripped and torn business suits, now apparent that these husks once worked inside these buildings.

Going up the stairs, he could not look at the bodies in the face, disgusted at the fact that a creature so large would be able to kill and consume human life, and even more disgusted that it left their bodies to rot in the webs.

Opening the next door, he was then greeted with another set of human bodies in the room. Moving towards the door, Liam-31 recognized one of the bodies in the room, moving to inspect the husk further.

Even as the body was drained from life, a withered corpse left with bones poking through its rotting skin, Liam-31 could recognize the face of the man as the one he had seen in the family and photo portraits previously.

Looking at the face of the man, Liam-31 became lost in thought as he observed the body, not realizing that he was distracted from his progress to reach the top of the building.

It was only until he heard the sound of hissing from the room that he realized the dire situation he was in, quickly turning around and realizing what he saw through the light from his visor;

A million eyes.
