Chapter 13:

Hatching

Bastion

"Focus on the arachnae, first." Liam-31 said, as he began to pummel it with shotgun bullets, aiming at its eyes.

The arachnae hid in the corner of the room, shielding its eyes with its sharp legs, letting out a deep hiss as blood began to seep from its shot out eyes.

Liam-31 knew that his bullets weren't going to kill the arachnae due to his last encounter, but it would be difficult to recreate the same event of cutting the bottom of the arachnae to kill it.

Taking too long to think, the arachnae lunged towards Liam-31 with its legs aiming to kill, as Liam-31 quickly pushed himself from the arachnae's attack.

As Liam-31 got off the ground, Judas-12 began to shoot at the arachnae's back, where it crawled around the room keeping its eyes on the two bastions.

"What do we do?" Judas-12 asked, as he continued to shoot at the arachnae which continued to quickly move around the room.

"Keep shooting at it. We'll find an opening soon enough." Liam-31 said, as he brought up his shotgun to shoot at the arachnae alongside Judas-12.

Most of the arachnae's eyes had been shot out by the bullets that connected to its face, as its blood began to blind its vision. The arachnae ran into one of the walls in the room, as it fell to the ground trying to regain its vision on the bastions.

Reloading their weapons, they continued to shoot at the arachnae's body to weaken it, as the arachnae turned around to attack Liam-31.

Evading the arachnae's attack, Liam-31 fell to the ground, as the arachnae quickly maneuvered to lunge at Judas-12, who was just barely able to dodge the arachnae's attack, falling to the floor and releasing his gun from his hand.

The arachnae took the opportunity to attack Judas-12 while he was vulnerable, as it quickly jumped from the wall towards Judas-12, who struggled to get off the floor and grab his gun.

Without any other options to defend Judas-12 from the attack, Liam-31 quickly took out a grenade, releasing the pin and throwing it at the arachnae's direction. The explosion from the grenade would be able to severely damage the arachnae, but Judas-12 was too close to where he threw the grenade.

"Cover yourself!" Liam-31 shouted to Judas-12, who shielded his body with his arms, as the grenade exploded on the arachnae's body, covering the room in its blood as what remained of the arachnae's carcass lay dead on the ground, blood spilling from its wounds.

Judas-12 quickly got up from the floor, panting heavily from the explosion of the grenade as he grabbed his gun from the ground.

"You had to throw the grenade right next to my body?" Judas-12 said, as he looked at the arachnae's carcass.

"It was the only thing I could do to stop the arachnae from attacking you." Liam-31 replied, reloading his shotgun.

"You said that the thing in the middle of the room was an egg, right?" Judas-12 said, as he looked towards the area where the egg was at.

"Yeah. If that egg hatches, thousands of arachnae will pour out of it." Liam-31 said.

"I think your grenade might have made it hatch, then." Judas-12 said, as he continued to gaze at the egg, which began to move around erratically, as if something large was living inside of it.

Without having the ability to stop the egg from hatching, Liam-31 and Judas-12 watched in horror as numerous holes began to poke out from the egg, as what they saw could only be found in nightmares.

Thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of arachnae's poured from the holes of the egg. The size of a golf ball, the small arachnae's crawled out of the egg in hoards, it was almost as if a large shadow formed in the room.

"What the hell do we do?" Judas-12 said with a twitch in his body. He began to shoot at the large mass of arachnae's without releasing his finger from the trigger as more kept emerging from the egg.

"We need to leave. We can't let them leave this building. We're blowing it up." Liam-31 said, as he began to run out of the room, with Judas-12 right behind him.

Noticing their presence, the large shadow of arachnae's began to creep behind them, as the two bastions kept running down the building.

"How are we going to blow the building up? It's impossible without a bomb!" Judas-12 said.

"We're using sticky grenades. We have just enough to place along the walls, and once we get to the entrance of the building, you'll shoot the last grenade, creating a large explosion in the building." Liam-31 calmly said, which even surprised Judas-12, as the situation they were in usually didn't keep people calm in any sort of matter.

Taking the sticky grenades from his armor, he placed the grenades on the walls as they got lower and lower into the building, the loud beeping of the grenades was the only thing that could be heard in the dark building, alongside the endless sounds of the legs of the arachnae's that followed behind them.

They knew that just one of those baby arachnae wouldn't kill them, but as a hoard of them moved to kill, they knew that there was no worse death than being suffocated and eaten alive from the inside by thousands of small arachnae.

Finally reaching the entrance to the building, Liam-31 threw his last sticky grenade onto the wall. As they both ran out of the building, they could see the large hoard of arachnae's closing in on the entrance.

"Shoot the grenade, now!" Liam-31 instructed Judas-12, as without hesitation, he fired a single bullet towards the grenade, creating a ricochet of explosions inside of the building, the hoard of arachnae ceasing to exist.

Looking up, they could see the building obliterate from the explosions within, as seconds later, the building came crashing down, as the bastions shielded themselves from the debris, finding only the rubble and remains of the building. The human bodies stored inside the building were unable to be seen, they had most likely been destroyed alongside the building.

Which was for the better.

"Huff... Huff..." Judas-12 panted, he leaned onto one of the large pieces of debris that surrounded them, as he scanned their surroundings.

"What do we do now...?" He asked Liam-31, who looked up into the sky, seemingly for only mere seconds, before he turned around, beginning to walk.

"Follow the mission."

Without another word, Judas-12 regained his posture, reloading his auto rifle, before following shortly behind Liam-31 as they continued to walk towards the position of the camp.
